And Heres My Third Choice Original 15 inch EMPI 8 Spokes

They might not be original BRM's but I'm working on them so that that they look as close as possible like the real Thing...

They got Acid dipped, they will be repolished, machined to accept Original BRM Inserts, and then repainted...

The Picture with the Firestone is a before Picture...

I bought these wheels 12 years ago. BRM were too expensive even at this time. I didn't care because I wanted RADER wheels.

Just out of interest does anyone know if Cal Parts came in anything wider than 6 inch  ??? ??? ???

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Rune on November 19, 2006, 00:33:11 am
I've only heard about 6's. I had a set of cal parts before I got the crestlines. The crestlines are allso 6"

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Lee.C on November 19, 2006, 00:36:05 am
I was thinking a while back about having a pair widened  :o I know Dave Conklin had a set of original rims narrowed, Does anyone know any more info on doing this  ???

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Rune on November 19, 2006, 01:01:50 am
Cant imagine it to be a problem to have a pair widend on the backside. Personally I would like to have a little less offset on my front wheels, so I would be able to run them on a stock width beam.. But I think the design of the spokes would make this difficult

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Lee.C on November 19, 2006, 01:09:49 am
OFFSET - we tried fitting my Cal Parts on the back of my friends 63 the other day and they stuck out about 1.5 inches  :o ok they do have 225/70's on them  :D

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Zach Gomulka on November 19, 2006, 08:17:27 am
You could have the fronts narrowed and the rears widened... When the wheel shop cuts the rims in half they can offset the cut then switch the backsides of the rims. So from four 6" wheels, you could have one pair 5", and one pair 7" ;D

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: j-f on November 19, 2006, 13:56:06 pm
A friend have found a pair of original widened 4 bolts wheels. It seems to be 6" wide. Theyre are stamps "Lemmertz" and VW. More info? It was optional of standard for some models?

Hey....... they look good Jordy...what color are you gonna make the insite...

Thanks Eddie! I'm still deciding what colour to paint the centers. It's hard to choose a nice colour for "spoke rims" for a red car.
Most of the red cars have "dish rims" with the center painted black and some chrome highlights...

Your wheel looks good Jordy ;)

Yes Thanks for the effort you put into it to make it shine like it does now... :) :)
I still can't believe it took you only 30 minutes to get this result with the wheel with the deepest scratches...  :o 8)

Like this one? I personally don't like this colour very much as combination with red...

I belive that the steel-backed five spokes were made by "Rocket Wheels" but I am not 100% sure.

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: simon uk on February 05, 2007, 14:17:21 pm
If you look at the wheels on Teros wheel site, fundamentally, Ets, cal parts, Rockets and Crestlines are all very similar. The way to tell the difference between them is the width of the actual rims compared to the spokes. From the pictures on Teros site, the closest wheel to Aliens is the Rocket. As you look straight on, there is an outer rim, and an inner rim and all these wheels have different widths to these rims, but the Rocket is closest.

Rocket Racing on here not surprisingly has a set of these on his car, he would be able to tell easily! Anders, where are you?

Si.

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Rune on February 05, 2007, 14:30:07 pm
Don't think these are Rockets either.. Rocket wheels don't have round spokes, they have a sharper edge on the spokes.

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?

Ets definately do have a ridge or line down the middle of each spoke!

Si.

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Rune on February 05, 2007, 15:25:18 pm
The ETs have round spokes, like the crestlines. Allso the ETs are all aluminium..

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Turtle001 on February 05, 2007, 16:30:12 pm
those are mine (ex Anders)

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: simon uk on February 05, 2007, 17:47:00 pm
The top spoke on that ET kind of looks like there is a line in the middle, but they definitely look rounded apart from that. I think on some of these wheels there are unoffical mark 1, 2 or 3 versions which differ slightly?

PS, turtle, did you get my pm on the tach?

Si.

My good friend Rob from east coast manx has a set of 4 steel backed 5 spokes (non matching as 2 have a lip and 2 don't ) and we have always believed that these were ET's  :-\ ???

I'd love to have a pair of those american torque thrust wheels? Does any one have a spare set?  ;)

I was very close to having a pair shipped over from the US 2 years ago. It was a set of 6" for the rear and narrowed 4.5" for up front.
Should fit my 67 like a &***%$# glove  ;D

Here's my old school wheels.... 4.5" Deano Dyno-Soars fronts on Smart Car tires, and 6" DDS rears, on M&H DOTs.

the 4-lug BRMs really look strange to me. If it has to be 4-lug :-) I would choose the porsche repros or 4-lug sprint-stars.

Personally I Dont Like the 4 Lug BRM's What are you putting them on?
I'm putting them on 69 schpare kafer (don't have bloody idea how does it spel) "he" has 4 lug drums (discs when I'll put the wheels on)

it how he was looking before I went to uk...

i had this dilemma too... it can be quite difficult to find nice 4 lug wheels that look appropriate.
i chose these KronPrinZ as i found them for cheap and fixed them up all the way:

but there are a few other good choices around.

choose the 2.0 liter fuschs in black & polish  ,it's look better than the 4 lug brm's ( those aren't made in past for the vw  ,only for the austin mini ) ::)

there are lots of cool 4-lug wheels, my favourites being Sprintstars, but you have also the already mentioned 2.0 Fuchs, plus Pedrinis, Mahles, Rivieras...

BTW I think it's spelled Sparkäfer  ;)

The replicas only look the same on the move...! The early replicas might have been closer in design... the spyder looks like tiger claws gripping the hub, while the replicas of today looks just like a bunch of fat sausages!  ::)

The 4 lug brms were originally designed for mini's before the VW's, but they were 13" diameter.  I don't like them either.

You mean those:
(http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/7199/2litremws1gp1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

You can get original 4-lug Fuchs quite cheap, in many cases even cheaper than the set of new repros, so no point of buying the repro in the picture.

If I would be buying wheels for late model and wouldn't like to spend a lot of money I would go for 911 numbered 5-lug Fuchs, even they're missing the look of earlies they would be still original.

american racing front runners..

and crestline? they have alu senter and face, the rest is steel.. anyone nows anything about them?

Those Crestline lookalikes.....Don`t know anything about them. But I have a single one myself. The rim is really heavy and the welding between the aluminum and steel doesnt look too convincing....Does yours look like this one at the rear side?

No, it wasn`t. I was running dropped spindles so they were close to the lower trailing arm and when I would hit a freeway onramp they would rub just a little but that was enough for me. Besides I had a set of four lug Ansens to go on instead.

No matter what style, year or make...wheels should always have 5 spokes or more. 4 (or even silly 3 spokes) look like something from a cartoon...well...in my oppinion anyway.  ;)

I hate to beat a dead horse, but..............

Once again I have to point out that you Shubee are trying to lay claim to aset of wheels that I own and you've never been close to except in the pictures you find on the internet.

Do I have to lay all the facts out in this thread too or are you going to man up and admit these are not your wheels, never were your wheels, you've never touched them, you've never been with in 1000 miles of them.

"Mr. Warehouse"-Greg,
Are the spinners shown on your NOS wheels original to the wheels?
I ask as I have a set of American 5's, two having the threaded area for the centercap being machined for a left hand thread.

I have wondered for a long time why American Wheel would have gone to the trouble when making a wheel for a VW,especially given the small actual number of wheels that they produced during their original manufacture.

Do you know anything as it relates to my question? THANKS!
Steve

Yes, they are original.
Some people claim to have origial "Hex" style caps instead, but you can't really arguewith stuff that's right out of teh box.
Left and right hand threads were both used I assume to keep the spinners from becoming loose and flying off.

Both my magnesium sets are RH threads so maybe you got what the store had back in the day unless you asked for the LH threads.
My Aluminum set has no threads at all it takes a 2 pieces cap.

I'm no expert, I'm learning as I collect.

I wish I could Fabian, but I don't have many of the car yet.  Were you there at the last drag day?  I was anxious to run the car again, but Carter Sidedraft demons kept us from running it.  We never even unhooked from the crew cab.  Bummer.  I havent had time to work on it since.......  That's life.  Fun car, though!  Yes, they are American Mags.

The car is a low mile original car.  No EMPI.  Only the period Sun Tach, wheels and tires and the engine and trans are changed from original.

Wow, what a find!  From one treasure hunter to another, I am green with envy.  Tell us how you dug them up please?

A friend of a friend deal.
The "seller" put them on ebay under a weird listing and didn't get any decent bids.
He contacted my friends boss who contacted my friend, then he contacted me.

A auction of sorts went down between myself and the high bidder.
Kind of a 1 shot tell me what you'll pay thing, and I guess I was willing to pay more.

I'm sure being stored in the boxes in dry Arizona has kept them from turning dark.
We'll see what happens ince I get them here.
My used set was blasted 6 months ago and they still look brand new.

Always had a bit of a soft spot for porsche patten magnesium torque thrusts myself , but cant see a day when I could justify the price a set go for now . Still I can dream , don't suppose anyone will make a accurate copy of these 30 year old classics ?  ::)

American Racing made the Torque thrust for Porsche in aluminum and mag.  Aluminum was 7" only (as far as I have ever seen).  The magnesium wheels were available in 5", 5.5", 6" , 7" and 8" (or 8.5 not sure)

I have personally owned 5.5's, 6's and 7s in magnesium.  I currently have mag 6"s as a spare set for my 911 and aluminum 7"s as a spare set for my Cal-looker (fronts narrowed to 4")

I am actually considering selling my magnesium 6's, but they wont be cheap if I do.

Arrrgghh never sandlblast a polished wheel lip.  It wil take forever to get all of those little pits polished out! :o
Also, I think you will be disapointed with your raw centers  The raw blasted finish will grab onto every bit of brake dust and road grime.  They will be a nightmare to keep clean.
I would suggest experimenting with the different cast finish paints out there for low sheen, non-metallic finish for your spokes.

Hey Fabian, that wheel/ drum fouling sucks. Have you got any brakes in mind as an alternative? There are a couple of sets of Maico disc kits on samba at the moment, that would suit your period ride better than a CSP disc kit in my humble opinion! Not cheap, but those 356 drums being sold would cover some of the cost!

Nope, no Cal Look car here. I'm a Resto Cal guy.
1 set will end up on one of my Buses after I do some modifing to the drum, the others will go in with the rest of my wheel collection.

I had cash in my pocket, got a great deal on all these wheels. At some point someone with more cash will come along and the wheels will move on.
Better than a bank account, 401k, or a CD.
Much easier to store than another car too.

Don't be a hater.

I know who you are Gary, but I don't recall you ever stepping up and buying anything from me.
If you did and you were unhappy a simple phone call or email would have handled it.
15 + years I've been doing this and I've never "burned" anybody.

If you have problem with me call, PM, or email.
Don't poke jabs at me on the internet. That won't fix anything.

Back on track....

Normal radials. The wheels are gonna be put on my daily driver, a 1964 T1. And to get to SCC I have to drive around 600km each way. :-)

I'm not sure, but wasn't Cosmic an English company? I think that the small version of the wheels were for an Austin Mini. Speedwell also made a small version of the BRM for a Mini.

I'd be careful with that one. Same seller had the same wheels, same pictures, etc. On ebay about 6 months ago and they "sold" then for $3900+

Why is he listing them again??

I'm going to have to get some photos! In four lug I've currently got a set of four 4.5" chrome Sprintstars (Johnny Grigg's old wheels), a set of five split rim Empi 8-spokes, a set of four repro 8-spokes (and the poster earlier in this thread was right, they are totally different!), a pair of KN Gemini wheels (a British made wheel, apparently designed to replace the BRM) and in five lug I've got a set of four Flat Four BRMs which I want to have re-polished to look more like originals and a set of four American Eagle fuch-style wheels. I didn't mean to start building up a little collection but it just happened! :D

OG means "original gangster".

My point exactly, why do vW people use this phrase to describe something?   Now there have been a few crooks over time selling parts, but as far as I am aware none of them have actually been gangsters, maybe the 2nd incarnation of Empi ;)  Now back to the subject, cheers richie,uk

I always thought OG was original, in this case to determine between the original empi wheels, and later reproduction wheels.

By the way, I thnk the 8 spokes on the front of my old cabrio were 14's, and I forget just how nice original empi 8 spokes look! They are comparitively cheap these days as well - certainly a cheaper alternative to fuchs on a late model IMHO!

Si.

Nope, OG is Original Gangsta.  Term came from the rap world and for some reason the VW community has latched on to it.
Kids will try to say it means Original German.....and then they describe EMPI parts as OG !?!?!?!  Whatever

For what it is worth, the accepted abbreviation for original is orig.

What really chaps my arse is when someone says "NOS part, only installed once but never used". I hate to break it to you buddy, but once you installed it, its now just a used part. I HATE with a vengeance NOS being spoken as "noss". It's pronounced "Enn-Oh-Ess". No ifs no buts. OK? (Or should that be "Okay"?) >:(

The same goes for nitrous systems being referred to as NOS or even "Noss". NOS is a trade name – Nitrous Oxide Systems. N2O is better but only refers to one part of the process.

I always laugh when Dutch people try to say VW in English and say "Vee Wee" instead of Vee-Double-U (or veedub)...  ;D ;D ;D
I get their confusion though because in Dutch one pronounces VW as "Vay Way".

If Someone says Noss or Nawss (redneck version) your thought process should be:

1. This clown is a maroon

2. Should I race him for cash or pink slips?

3. Is the POS ricer he is driving worth parting out?

Of course if he is driving a Porsh your answers may vary.  ;D

It'sa So Cal thing....
Quote
Since the 1950s, E Ticket (or E ticket ride) has referred to an unusually thrilling, interesting, most-interesting, or most-expensive situation. It derives from the tickets used at Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks until 1982. Park-goers bought tickets in different denominations, from A through E, with E tickets being the most expensive and reserved for the newest, most expensive or popular rides and attractions.

To expand on Mr. Warehouse's posts. Back in the day, Disneyland sold rides individually. You'd buy tickets and then give them to the ride operator. Tickets were A, B, C, D or E with the E Tickets being the most expensive and offering the most exciting rides,

there's a set of polished 13" on ebay.com right now......

This ones !
And for an amayezing price...............
99,95 $ for 4 wheels

But keep cool guys, items are sold !

The "Empi GT alloy wheels" were also marketed as "Empi GT Spyder wheels" . 8 spokes were definately made in 13" for vws. Although never mentioned in any of the catalogs..... They are pretty uncommon though. Here is a pic of one of my 13" wheels. 4x130 mm.

They're also kind of an odd size... I think they're 390mm. Also, the bead is at a different angle.

The tires I got off Kris Klingaman's car when he put the short M&H's on. Funny story about getting them mounted, I drove my '55 over to Super Shop's on Chapman in Garden Grove, they would'nt mount them on the car because they were "non DOT approved" & the car was driving on the street. So I was a bit miffed, I put the tires back in the car ,pulled out  onto Chapman Ave & bought the motor up & let it fly... And it did a big ol' wheelstand in 1st and 2nd. So I drove home & pulled the front wheels off & went back. The Holley 4 barrel selling Super Shop guys were totally blown away by what happened out on Chapman...

I never liked the meatheads at Super Shops. There was one a mile or two down the street from Buggy House. I went in there and bought my Flowmaster from them. Of course the elmo that sold it to me had to make a freaking comment about owning a Bug.

I would go with the Torkers first choice and the BRM's second Choice to me the Crestlines are to much like the Empi 5 spoke's. The look of the Torker there is No other look a like for it

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?

I disagree Shub. The single most important design element in a wheel is "depth". In a perfect world the Empi Five would have more lip... but then they wouldn't fit the VW anymore, as the ET goes out the window. Both the Empi five, the Crestline, and the Torker is doing their best to look like the American TORQUE THRUST design. It's quite easy to see who got the closest to archiving the look. To bad they fit the bug so poorly.

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Lee.C on March 02, 2008, 14:20:18 pm
Try Cal Parts if your looking for "Depth" ;) :)

And before you say it I know thay don't fit on a bug  ::)

Title: Re: OLD SCHOOL CAL LOOK WHEELS lets see yours?
Post by: Rocket-Racing on March 02, 2008, 14:50:51 pm
I'm not a big Empi 5 fan, but I have to say they work very well on your car Fabian.
If I were you I would not go for the BRM's. They suit most cars and would be fine on yours too, but your car is one of few that is really different and stands out from the crowd, I think they would make it more mainstream..
The Torkers are cool but I'm with JHU on this one, think they should have more lip and not too keen on the "backward bent" spokes.
I would definetely go for the Crestlines as they are genuine and would suit the look on your car very well. They would make it perfect in my eyes. But then I have always been partial to old fivespokes..
