I've booked the weekend off to - I am trying to persude Rob to come in his Bronze manx - I think we might go a slightly SHORTER route this time, you never know though it was a F^&KIN AWSOME journey  ;D ;D ;D

I'm quite nostalgic of this trip.
Even come back in solo From Oslo to my town in Belgium was a great time!

Ferry's are a good solution to have a faster, safer and easier trip but are quite expensive. When I check the Ferry in Oslo, It was something like 400€ to go to Copenhagen. It was half the way, but cost twice the money I use in gas. Around 600€.

 

Ferry prices varies alot and my best tip is to book your ferry ticket well in advance. We will do our best to get a discounted rate on the most popular ferries for you guys.

The fuel prices is a bit out of our reach....... yet  ;)

As for which route I will take I have NO idea yet but I know I will have dual carbs next year so I should use ALOT less fuel  :D :D :D

I was thinking of getting the ferry from the UK then drive all the way home :)

Two options from UK;

Newcastle - Stavanger. Commercial ferry, restaurants, shops etc etc etc. Quite a huge gang going to SCC from Stavanger so maybe drive together with them? Beatiful trip over the mountain from Stavanger to Oslo - approx 6,5 hours at ordinary speed. Fantastic scenery!

Hull - Breivik. This is a ro-ro boat. You leave your car and they bring it over and you pick it up at Breivik. Quite cheap. Brevik is 2 hours from Gardermoen and very close to Brevik is Torp airport and you can get cheap flights to Torp from the UK.

My recommendation; take the Newcastle - Stavanger ferry and hook up with Trond Dahl and the rest of the DKL club. Drive with them over the mountain and enjoy the view.

hello, im pretty sure that the ferry service from newcastle to norway stopped in september, which is some-what inconvinient. so no longer an option.

we had a good deal for ferries from frederikshavn(denmark) to oslo. some guys from mib (vw club aalborg, denmark) did all the booking. almost half price.  ;D

I suppose too  ;)

But for me, as I use dual carbs for some weeks, I will have to use A LOT MORE  gas.
Or maybe put my 1300 SP again in the car for the trip  :-\ (And you know how this engine is work.    ;D A really high mileage engine )

Aah JF, come on! Let eh 1835 on it, make a couple of passes on the track, break the gearbox. then think about how you'll get home ;)

been looking at the posts about all the mods. that could mean your car will be running very well for a 1641... if it isn't done by the Volksworldshow i may be able to help out a bit if that weekend is in my holidays as well.
anyway i hope i can make it and get to SCC as well. i do hope with the car again. if not (funds not allowing), i will manage to get there hopefully by means off buggy or plane. i would certainly prefer cars, as the trip is painfully awesome.

For the guys bringing your cars to Norway for the SCC, if you want to make more than a weekend of your trip to Norway, some of us in the Norwegian VW community are planning a tour of Southern Norway in the week (or 2 weeks) prior to the SCC event. The trip will be a scenic ride of a lifetime with lots of spectacular fjords and mountains, visiting all the interesting cities and places in Southern and Western Norway and stops at some of our VW friends all across the country. The cruise will end at SCC and you are welcome to join us anywhere on the route - from the beginning in Oslo, take a shorter route to join us for parts of the trip og join from for instance Stavanger og Bergen if that is where your ferry takes you.

The trip is still in early planning stages. Here's a couple of pictures to wet your appetite - one of the fjords we will be visiting, and a classic drive - the Trollstigen (directly translated: the Troll ladder)

Me and Frank have been talking about it and he said he will go again and with his car. Also I'm going to talk with the rest of the Outlaws at our next meet. To see who would like to come maybe we could try and work out a car transporter. Then all we have to do is fly over.

My Club Warwagens put on our first show last year and we tried to promote a laid back like the european shows .Participant judged show for a top "20" awards,free dash plaques,Free entry for pre 57' vehicles ,classic & custom bike show & a VW tattoo contest !

 We had 78 cars including a 44 '82e & a 46'.Next year we are giving free entry for pre 67' bus.We hope to get some drags going at our local track also  ;)

Since we will be away 2 weeks from home we want to take our dog with us, it's a great dane...

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) has published rules for the Importation of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets to Norway . These rules are based on the Commission Regulation (EC) No 998/2003, and only apply to pets which are accompanied by their owner or person responsible for them. There must be no intention to sell or transfer any animal.

From EU countries, except Sweden, you are permitted to import your pet animal if it has an identification chip or tattoo, pet passport, has had all necessary vaccinations and is presented to customs on entry to Norway.

It's something like 1250 (miles) but there are a few alternatives. One would be the Ferry from Newcastle to Stavanger which lands you a days drive from the track.  :)

There´s a couple of options on how to get there.

We did the Fredrikshavn - Oslo ferry when going to EBI1, very nice since you arrive in Oslo in the morning fresh and completely rested. At a cost of course...
Last year when travelling to EBI2 we did the Puttgarden - Rødby ferry(45 min) and drove the whole trip in one sitting.
Took us 22 hours with car and trailer. No problem really, put I wouldn´t have gone racing afterwards!  :)

The Oslo - Chimay trip is about 1500km, not sure how much longer Oslo - Calais is, but no more than 1600.

It would have been a nice option and they could tag along with us driving from Stavanger.... but.. the strech from Newcastle to Stavanger does not exist anymore. I'm still hoping it will pop back now with the new terminal etc. to have a short trip to the UK this year.. but...

BTW. Looking very much forward to seeing your car up close Adele!

Ok, i have done some homework andi have pretty much answered all of the questions i asked, so sorry :)

Right i have found 2 ferries, one from Immingham ( Grimsby for you southerners!! ) to Brevik, and Immingham to Gotherburg. By my calculation Gotherburg to Gardermoen is around 190 miles.

There is a ferry (food and cabin included) from Immingham departing Thursday 0400 arriving Gothenburg 08am Friday, just in time to drive up to the track.
The Brevik one is 42 hours, but i dont think its worth it as its still a 2 hour journey to the track ? plus Ferry goes out Wed, day earlier !

Just working out the prices now, but if we were to drive alone ie across europe it would be around £650 in fuel, let alone the other ferries !

Plus this way, Immingham is only an hour or so from where we live :)

Oh we may have 2 spare places if anyone does not mind a 28 hour ferry, and a short car journey either side ??

Gothenburg - SCC is a very nice trip, very good roads and not too much traffic!

Eric, you will have no trouble with driving a Swedish rental car over the border. But there is also a excellent train connection from Gothenburg to SCC (Oslo International Airport).
I also know there will be people from the Gothenburg region racing at SCC. Send me a PM if you want to get in touch with them  ;)

I have had a couple of days of, and been around enjoying some of the near by offers of the Oslo fjord area.
You should really consider visiting these places if you come to Norway and SCC.  :)

In Oslo we have the Viking ship museum. Where there are three ships to be seen, and many artefacts found together with the ships:

Just down the street from the Viking ship museum we have the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History where there is a huge collection of old buildings (about year 1000 up to the 1950`s) from all over Norway. They have been rebuilt in beautiful surroundings, and it’s hard to believe this is almost in the middle of Oslo city!
Many of the buildings can be visited inside, and if you are lucky, you may meet a beautiful Norwegian girl there…  ;)

Hmmm looks like there are a few things to do then - Other than hanging around Kalle's Cabin ;) :)

About one hour south of Oslo, you can visit one of the oldest cities in Norway. Tønsberg has fantastic scenery, with its castle tower guarding the city from its highest point. You can enter this tower and get the 360 degree view of the whole town!
A huge number of restaurants are located down by the docks, and this ads the perfect surroundings to your dinner.

Todi, the asphalt/concrete pit areas was completely booked over a month ago. Please mail Berger at oyvind.berger@bergers.no , he will let you know about an alternative pit area.

The SCC shop&tickets uses a paypal shoping cart. There seems to be a problem with the paypal site at the moment, so please try again later :)

Ok. I will try again later! Were is the gravel pit area then. I can not see it on the map... Is it half way to Oslo  :-\ I think it can´t be so good to drive with hot slicks after a race on the gravel...

To put things in perspective: During the European Drag Racing Championship rounds on Gardermoen there are about 230 teams racing. Only top fuel and some funny car teams are on asphalt/concrete. The other 200 teams are on either grass or gravel.

PS. The gravel pit areas are only a few meters from the other pits.

Important information about the SCC Taxi service!

Please post your arrival time at Gardermoen Airport in this tread and send a sms to +47 92 65 10 74 when your plane has landed!

The SCC taxi will also be available for transport to and from the SCC hotel , Quality Airport Hotel Gardermoen. Last departure from the event to the hotel will be at 22:00.

Also time for a reminder of the drinking/driving laws on public roads in Norway.
Norway has very strict drink/driving laws, only allowing 0.1milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood, the strictest in Europe.
The limit is very low (equivalent to a small glass of wine or half a pint of weak beer). Anything over 0.02 per cent and you could face anything up to imprisonment.

At the SCC we will not tolerate any drinking and driving at all! Any signs of drivers being affected by alcohol or drugs will be reported to local police.
This, of course, to provide maximum security and well-being for the attendants :)

So drinking and driving: Don't do it!

Hi just to be clear..!

Some of us don't plan to bring any food at all.
So if I have understood it correct, then we can buy burgers etc. from the food tent in the day time, what about the evening? can we still buy food there or what about the screwdrivers BQ like we did some years ago, the big nice Srewdrivers juicy burgers?  ;)

Anders, the food stand will be open from early morning for breakfast and closes after dinnertime in the early evening.
The Screwdrivers Club will have their famous T-Bar-B-Q burgers for sale on friday evening. If you want something for saturday evening after dinner I suggest to buy some baguette´s at the food stand before they close. There will also be a grill available on Saturday evening for those wanting to grill themselves a steak or hot dog etc.

Bang, all asphalt depots have been sold out for some time now, but we have gravel pits available. Who are not as bad as they sound, see my reply #164/167 in this thread.  :)

99 octane "V-power Racing" fuel is available at Shell stations. E85 only available at some stations in the central Oslo area if I am not mistaken.

A bike ran in the 5´s for the first time outside the US @ Gardemoen Raceway today. This is the first time ever outside the US. And something like the 4th time EVER.
So: Have no fear, the track is in VERY good shape before SCC in two weeks!!!!!   :o ;D ;D

I have a ferry booked from Copenhagen 17:00pm to Oslo 09:30am on Tuesday 11th.

This is for a car and a trailer.

So anyone can use this please let me know as the ticket is non-refundable.

I have messaged Alex/Jesus about it, just in case their tickets are refundable. I believe the bus guys are booked for that ferry aswell.

I did some research for you, and you might have a chance to get your money refunded. All travels to/from Norway is covered by a Norwegian law called pakketur-loven, directly translated the packaged trip law. It states (hastely translated by me):

"§5.1 Cancellations do to force majeure

The customer has a right to cancel the packaged trip and get the money paid refunded if it at the destination of the travel or in close proximity to it, within the last 14 days before the beginning of the trip, actions of war, natural disasters, dangerous contagious disease or other similar event, and that there is reason to believe the circumstances will prevail during the trip. (...) The right to cancellation do not apply if the customer knew or should have known the circumstances when he made the purchase."

You could claim the swine flu is a dangerous contagious disease and the disease has hit Norway hard the last couple of weeks. It has been the lead story just about every other day in Norwegian newspapers since people coming back from vacation has brought the flu with them.

I did not find an English version of the law, but I did find it on the DFDS site in Norwegian: http://www.dfdsseaways.no/kundeservice/reisebestemmelser/Reisebestemmelser#5.1

EDIT: Allthough it says §5.1 on the DFDS site, it is in fact §4.1 in the law itself.

Made it Oslo - whoohoo!

Thought I might be here much later, due to a delay in Dallas, prior to the flight to London. I had one of the flight attendents relay a message to the captain that I was coming to Norway for SCC. He put the pedal to the metal, we made up ~30 minutes of flight time, and I arrrived with time to spare for my flight to Oslo.

I just finished what I was told was a traditional Norwegian meal - beef pizza with grapes. I wasn't sure about it, but figured I'd give it a try, and was pleasantly surprised.

I'm headed to the west coast in a couple of hours (Bergen) to catch up with Marius Andreassen and the R2R crew. I'll be in Bergen for a couple of days (doing the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour on one), then heading to Stavenger to meet with Trond Dahl and the DKL guys for a drive to Gardermoen (via Kristiansand for an overnight stay).

Ohh no... a cal-looker has been involved in an accident this afternoon, probably on it's way to SCC. Thank God the driver - a Danish person - is reported to have only minor injuries.

The car looks very damaged. The report says it has major damages to the back. The picture in the link below only shows the front of the bug and that it damaged aswell.

haha, I`m using the hotel internet computer right after nico I guess.  still in norway but so far it was a blast!  Thumbs up for the SCC crew for such a great event.

In Fact the Best VW show i have ever been too  ;D

I want to Thank Jan, Espen and the WHOLE Slackers Garage for being  excellent hosts,

So far have driven my lil 1776cc powered bay from the UK to SCC and managed to run a new PB of 16.7 @ 128kmt

Just the return journey to do tonight,

Can somebody explain why it makes a better ET with a slower speed? It is not the first time I see this but can not understand the relationship between speed and ET.

What a meeting, arriving on thursday evening the first I got a beer in the car still in front of the airport, talking about hispitality. Great weather on friday, looking around , meeting people. Saterday saw the skinne beetle do his thing and saw rain fill the showground, thankgod not my tent and shoes.
Sunday racing started early and was great to see. Next year I'll be racing too.
Big thanks to Stian and Barbro who made sure I didn't starve and met some great people.

If you are thinking of the 9.03 run vs the 9.01 run?

The 9.03 run had a "poor" 60ft time: 1.45 compared to usual approx 1.35-1.38. (As a rule 0.1sec better 60ft gives 0.2sec better ET.)

On the 9.01 run I think they had slightly better 60ft but one of the IC hoses jumped of at the very end and thats whats most likely caused the lower end speed but still better ET since the first part of the run was quicker.

Got home at 2am this morning and at work at 8.30, tired now but had an awesome weekend ;D

We are just chillin at Jan's about have some food - I'm still recovering though ;)

Your bus is definently one of the coolest I have ever seen. And I am amazed at how well it perfomed on the track - you put on a great show!

I'm still on my way home, and am currently enroute to Dallas/Fort Worth airport (gotta' love checking out The Lounge via in-flight Internet access!)

I'll be posting a full "trip report" and many of the ton of pics that I shot over my week long stay in Norway in the next few days, but for now I'll say that SCC was an incredible experience, and THE best VW event that I've ever attended.

Arrived home yesterday evening after a 25hour drive.

Thanks to all the guys that made this weekend possible, it was amazing.
I saw lots off incredibly fast cars, did some amazing barn / workshop visits and made new friends.

I also got home yesterday and first of all I like to thank Øystein for his overwhelming hospitality -Rune for convincing me to come even alone and taking care of me and JHU for our crazy night drive back to the Airport in Torp. And of course the whole SCC Crew for putting on the show and letting me feel so welcome!
SCC was once again a BLAST! Even a whole rainy day couldn't spoil the fun! Sunday was VW Racing at it's best - i just love that track up there in the woods!

I'm just so happy that i've a new PB and a new distance record for driving my bay.

My lil 1776cc does me proud, left coppenhagen yesterday morning, was only 80 miles from dunkerque when i gave up and slept last night, am now sat at home :D

1200miles or so in just over 24hrs with 5 hrs kip isn't bad going :D

Hey SCC crew!

Thank you SO MUCH for an unforgettable weekend, I can't remember when
I've had so much fun!

In fact, I think I had so many servings of "fun" that I forgot to take pictures...
ahh well, I still have my memories...no wait, where are they?

Here's a few shots:

Our trip didn't start out too well as we ran out of gas about 10 minutes
after leaving the ferry in Stockholm...about an hour of sightseeing and one
taxi ride later we were finally on our way to SCC:

After about ten hours of driving in a fully-loaded 25hp split bug, we
finally arrived in Norway, and were delighted to see that us Finns seem
to have plenty of in common with you guys after all. Our version of that
gas station sign loosely translates to "always keep your woman between
the stove and your fist":

When we finally arrived at SCC, it didn't take long to spot Kotten Tallgren,
owner and driver of Hitler's Revenge. It was really weird to see what he
had written on the windshield of his bay window bus as he is always laughing
at our garage (the Arabia Slugs):

We had to make sure Kotten was okay and took a peek inside his
sheet metal tent...we were quickly scared away by his vampire-like
sleeping posture though! That may explain the really late nights he's working
at his garage?

When that overgrown exchange student from Texas showed up, we gave him a taste of some
Finnish "working man's booze" and judging by the expression on his face, he would have rather
been home drinking Kool-Aid with dear mama. Note the Finn's reaction to the working man's

However, it seemed like Lucky Luke here got a little rowdy from that one sip after all, and insisted on a wrestling
match with one of us. Note the can of mother's milk in the Finn's hand:

Here is the result of the wrestling match. Looking at the Texan's face, it seems to me that he is
fantasizing about being one of the cowboys in Brokeback Mountain...

After that shot, I think I may have moved to taking shots of the working man's booze as
the rest of the night is a bit of a haze. It seems the camera endured anyhow since this
next photo is from Sunday evening. There was a huge lineup on our way to see some Fjords:

I guess reality struck us on the face when we realized we'd never make it to the real Fjords in
time with the 25hp split as we had to be back in Stockholm on Tuesday. Instead, we opted for an
outdoors center at an altitude of about 1000 meters with a climb of 10 degrees for 10 km to boot.
The damn bug didn't even twitch once during the climb even though the last bit of the climb called
for first gear...I guess they really made 'em tough in Deutschland:

After that long climb, we decided to treat ourselves with an old-fashioned Gypsy style barbeque at the top:

At this point we needed to put the camera away as we still had a hell of long way to get home and

I'd never been to Norway before and at the risk of sounding like a big softie, I totally fell in love with your country.
Drinking coffee in the small village of Eggedal after coming down from the great hill and watching people go about their
business, smoke coming out of chimneys and the world just stopping on its tracks, it really felt like a real Kodak
moment.

Thanks again guys, I will definately be back next year!

Hello VW-fans, we would like to thank you all for the great event again!!! The spirit of the SCC was great and we fully enjoyed all the time we spent there!!!

 Now after working some weeks back here in Finland and without taking some Lapinkultas, we finally managed to check my -51 beetle yesterday first time after the SCC-race and we found out that the gaswire was losen and it had opened only 3/4 in SCC...
The original shifter is now also changed into the next used original shifter + the hockeystick is modified, so now everything works perfect and we still have some possibilities here to drive against the clock if it will be sunny...

We will prepare well to the next season and we will try to get more Finnish VW-fans with us to the next SCC.
 
Next year 2010 we have also the VW-OPEN in Finland + 2011 the FVWA(the Finnish VW-association) is preparing the 30-years big show taking a 3-days event with dragrace, circuitrace+party etc...


As i wrote after 2008 SCC, it was the best VW-event this far, 2009 the spirit was the same.

If you are in bad need of a fix of brown cheese outside Norway, you are almost guaranteed to be served coffee and waffles with brown cheese at the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission :) They are represented in 30 countries including cities like London, Houston, LA, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Fransisco etc

Some even sell the stuff or at least you can calll them locally and they can for sure tell you the nearest shop to buy brown cheese and probably Vestlandslefse aswell. So call your local Norwegian Seamen's church today :D

okay, jick and I are seriously thinking about coming, we ahve to options.

1.fly

2.drive and bring a car, how long does this take?

Well depending on a few factors (do you still have to build the car, where do you live, do you drive at 60 or 120) it can vary a little...

the car will be towed, so we would be doing about 60mph 90km/h. 

well then, 2 or 3 days maybe..

just had a quick look via Google maps, and it says 24 hrs driving, which is fine cus we will share that.  but what about ferrys/bridges/tolls etc. 

I think the most economical is via Calais and then up through Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

I had this dilema this year,

we ended up going dover - dunkerque (Cheaper than Calais)

Driving through to Copenhagen in Denmark (One toll bridge we crossed in Denmark)

Overnight Party Boat to Oslo


If i was to do it again,

I'd go Dover - Dunkerque

Drive to denmark where to cut out a bit do the Puttgarden - Rodby Ferry (Avoids Toll Bridge)

and I'd then drive the rest. The journey is half the fun in my eyes.


It was great to go on the party boat, but i did regret not driving through sweden and more of norway.

I read your thread, and its cool to turn it into a holiday, but I don't think i can take 9-10 days in total.  So I was hoping to leave very early Thursday morning and come back either late monday or early Tuesday.

How much do you think you spent extra on tolls and ferrys (ignore channel crossing)

Our VW-club (MIB) have made a great agreement with Stena Line (roughly 40-50% discount on the ferry tickets), so if anybody is planning to go through Denmark and sail from Frederikshavn to Oslo, then let me know 2-3 months in advance (SCC 2010), and I will give you the booking details in order to get the discounts!

the toll in denmark was £25 ????

and our overnight ferry was £250 per 2 people and a van

we took our time on the way out, but..

we left Oslo on a monday evening ferry and i was sat at home by lunch time wednesday, so it's very possible to do it in a shorter time,

p.s. Thr frederikshavn to oslo ferry is well worth looking at as it does make the journey shorter, it was too expensive for me last year but with a discount would be welll worth a look!

Lids the way to do it is leave wednesday night,get the ferry crossing over and the time difference,there is a formula one motel in dunkerque for about 15euros each for the night to stay in then leave early thusday morning and you will be there after lunch friday.
I can do it towing a trailer in day & 1/2 doing all the driving so if you swap drivers you will do it easily.I found dover calais was cheaper towing than dunkerque but if you book by february there are soem really good deals,but even cheaper is to drive both cars onto the ferry if you are going to flat tow then hook the 2nd car back up the other side

Hmmmmm interesting guys - I will be going back in 2010 FOR SURE and this time I have the Golf estate (diesel) I will be towing/racing the manx  ;) :)

So I will have a couple of spare seats in the station wagon if anyone is interested (book early!)

thought you might dude - so whats the ruling on "roll bars" or "Cages" in buggies that run high 14's ???

Any convertibles (I assume that includes you) requires a roll bar.
If you are planning on driving 10.99 or faster you need a cage

Trust me Alex, you did not miss out on much. That part of Norway and Sweden is a monotonous drive, except the bridge from Malmø to Copenhagen.

If you want to see more of Norway next year, perhaps we could take some of the Slacker buses west to see the fjords etc
