Title: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on October 25, 2008, 21:11:24 pm Hopefully this will be finished sometime in 2009. It's been at a friends Cris Birks' workshop in Oxfordshire for a while now for the welding work and today it left for the Gavin Jones' workshop (Trailer Queen, Kernow) for the finishing work and paint so time for a thread...

I think it was available as a "Special Order" colour '66 - '72 and offered as standard in '73. :) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on October 26, 2008, 21:00:55 pm Good work on the resto! What's the color gonna be? Green. nice work on the welding! Good job,I also have such a late model-RUSToration project at home. ;) The worst rust was in the rear quarters but other than those Cris managed to leave quite a bit of the original car on it. A lot of it was repaired rather than replaced outright. :) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on October 31, 2008, 20:21:24 pm Since leaving here the car has now been blasted and primed ready for Gavin to start work on preparing the panels for paint. It looks like all the work Cris put into welding the car has paid off, we got sent a few pics last night and it looks brilliant. I'm really excited about seeing it in paint!
The Trailer Queen Restos Blog (http://trailer-queen-restos.skynetblogs.be/) has some of the other stuff Gavin's done on it, and given his penchant for black, it's a bit of a shame not to get him to paint my bug black, but the thing is it has always been and will always be a green car! :) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/VWBugResto4D001GJ-TrailerQueenResto.jpg) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/VWBugResto4D002GJ-TrailerQueenResto.jpg) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/VWBugResto4D003GJ-TrailerQueenResto.jpg) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: alfie the monster on November 01, 2008, 17:20:11 pm Looking good so far ;D

Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on November 21, 2008, 20:58:13 pm Quality job! :o :) We've been lucky with it in that both Cris and Gavin have understood what we wanted to end up with. We had to wait for a few things here and there like panels being made so it's taken a while but now that Gav is getting it ready to paint it and is straightening it all out the effort so far is starting to show. Hopefully the colour will work! :o Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: yvre on November 22, 2008, 01:11:43 am Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: richie on November 25, 2008, 23:45:14 pm needs a little more yellow tint in that paint and it would be spot on :) ;)

I have been squirelling away parts for the last 4 -5 years now so far I have a set of Fuchs already and tyred up and ready to go. The engine is a 2332 built by Dave Rhoads, the original plan was a 1776 but after some gentle persuasion and a consultation with Dave about the kind of results I wanted from the engine we settled on something with bit more go. I figure that he knows what he's doing as he's been doing it a while so I wasn't going to argue and it was really cool of him to build the motor so I left him to it and the gearbox is from Pete Englezos' Cogbox. :) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto2D008.jpg) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto2D001.jpg) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto2D007.jpg) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto7D001.jpg) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Martin Greaves on November 27, 2008, 23:50:25 pm Looking good ;D

what are the engine specs?are those brothers vw machine cylinder heads? Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: ESH on December 01, 2008, 11:25:22 am ... what are the engine specs?are those brothers vw machine cylinder heads? ... Well spotted, the heads are from Brothers Machine. At the time Sal bought her engine a friend had an express order on the go with Ugly Duckling so meanwhile we popped up the road and got Brothers on the case for ours. They've had some good results and came recommended so seemed to be a good place to go. Spec wise the engine's a fairly 'standard' 2332 set up slightly lazy. Most of it's from Scat with various things done to it by both Rimco and DK Machine. :) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on December 13, 2008, 20:06:30 pm The final prep has now been done and today it got some paint inside.

Adele, I am sure you are in the same frame of mind as me waiting for yours to be painted too. Excited doesn't quite cover it. ;DThe rest of the paint should be finished this week and then the car will be coming home sometime over the holidays! Best present ever :) Hi Kalle, slowly but surely its coming together. Getting the paint on feels like a big leap in the right direction and we are really pleased with how it looks. I just can't wait to see it in the flesh, as so far we are going by the same pictures you see here. Looks like we may have a busy xmas and new year ahead of us, but its all good. ;D Enjoy the xmas holidays and hope to see you soon with my "new" car sometime next year . Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Rennsurfer on December 17, 2008, 05:35:45 am Pretty looking car, Sal. Forgive me... but did the '73 Beetles in your country (and anywhere outside of the States) also have the big round tail lights? I've always wanted to do a Cal Look Beetle to a '73. I'd use the earlier bumpers (like what you have) and paint them body color along with the rubber packing that resides in the middle of the bumpers. Same with the headlight bezels.
The color that you chose is outstanding, also. The craftmanship on the body and paint it excellent. It's going to be one sweet car when it's completed. Congrats! The craftmanship on the body and paint it excellent. It's going to be one sweet car when it's completed. Congrats! I had to have green and it had to be either from the Porsche or the VW charts and in the end it was down to 2 greens but one was too 'British' looking, so wasn't going to work on a german car. So in the end the colour almost picked itself, pleased it looks good now its on the car. As for the craftsmanship Cris and Gavin have made it into a pretty good little car, can't thank them enough really. Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on December 18, 2008, 23:25:42 pm Thanks for the comments! All I can say is all the credit goes to the guys who've done the work so far, Cris Birks who stitched the shell back together and Gavin Jones who's made it shine, alot!
Sal, have you thought about the painted headlight rings? Mark has just done his, and Roland has them on his '68 too. I think they'd look awesome! I don't know what some bits will be like yet, not sure I want to go that way but maybe needs a bit more investigation, cos if it looks OK then who knows... :) But you know that you don't need bumpers, right? ;) ??? Uh? Whats the plan with the interior btw I'll maybe get some photos. I have some black basketweave bucket seats and have had a rear seat and door cards trimmed by Bernie Newbury to match. Headlining wise it'll be a 1200 (I'm told) style one. After it's back and on the pan it has to go to Essex to get finished off. The idea is that it doesn't stand out too much and looks a little like it did from the factory at a glance. :) will have to pop round and see it for my own eyes at some point Come over anytime, always welcome, you know where we are and you may have some good ideas, you've done this before! hope you both have a good christmas. You two too, first year in the new place? :) you will need to convert your front room to put it on display. It looks too good to use :o Have you been speaking with Mat! I feel there could be a conspiracy against me. Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on January 19, 2009, 21:26:04 pm It's been a busy week in various places, Gavin finished the paint, Cris has now finished the repairs on the pan and I went and picked up my gearbox on Friday from Pete at Cogbox, I don't know what the set up is but apparently it's what I asked for and has some good stuff in it, fine by me! Some things are best left to the experts.
Once the pan's back it's off to Deano's VWs for some assembly work and then it'll hopefully be time to turn it back into a car again. I saw the pan last week but still haven't seen the shell though I think it wont be too long until I do and that can't come soon enough! :) (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto17C01.jpg) Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on January 19, 2009, 22:37:45 pm (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk175/Sal--E/Restoration/Web-VWBugResto18C02.jpg)

I can totally understand your worries Sal. One tip, if you wear jeans or work wear with metal buttons, tape the buttons to protect the paint. Been there - done that :) Ups... Of course you gals wear tiny skirts and see through tops when you work on your car.. :-* Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Fonz on January 27, 2009, 11:14:29 am ... Been there - done that :) When I worked for Vauxhall (the UK part of Opel/General Motors) on my work placement year from university in 1998-1999, track workers were issued with several of those oh-so-80's sweat bands and I couldn't work out why. Then I spotted where they were worn - one on the wrist over the workers watch, and the other on their belt, over the buckle. Nothing worse than the first scratch on brand new paint... :o Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Lee.C on January 27, 2009, 20:46:26 pm Of course you gals wear tiny skirts and see through tops when you work on your car.. :-* :D :D :D :D Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: TomJ on January 31, 2009, 17:44:53 pm Looking good Sal and Mat!!

Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: airstuff on April 21, 2009, 11:03:02 am how's the progress going? :)
Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on April 21, 2009, 21:22:26 pm It's a little bit slower at the moment as there are a couple of parts we're having trouble getting good ones of (vent windows) and there are other parts that are off for being made shiny. It's just that they're most of the bits needed to get started.
What's another few months, it's only been 5 years since it was a Birthday present. ::) ;D Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: drgouk on June 13, 2009, 08:19:31 am very very nice 8) Whats the plan with the interior btw,? Cheers, Kev I wanted it to be like it was originally but a bit different if that makes any sense so I got Bernie to trim the interior to match some front seats I got. I interested as I am using a pan with the late 3 ponit seat mounts. Thanks David Gouk Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: Sal E on June 13, 2009, 21:13:11 pm Hello, Do you have some pics of your front seats? I interested as I am using a pan with the late 3 ponit seat mounts. Thanks David Gouk The seats come with general mounts so the guys at Cris' shop welded in some mounts to 'translate' the stock mounts to the new seats, basically there's a mount welded to the seat rails and two small mounts welded onto the front mounting. I can get some photos during the week if it helps? All the original mounting points on the pan are still there. Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: drgouk on June 13, 2009, 21:50:53 pm Hi, Some pics would be great, Im buliding a car using a late mexican floor with the same seat mounts. Just need some ideas of where to head. Thanks.

Just need some ideas of where to head. Thanks. David Gouk Sorry to go off topic Sal and Mat! David, my Dad and I put some Recaro seats into a Mk2 Golf belonging to a friend using the standard three point runners. We cut down a pair of Polo seats to get the tubework and the centre adjusting slider as one chunk, then modified the rear legs to fit the outer sliders for angle, width and height. The top of the tubework had strips of 5x25mm bar welded across and then drilled to bolt the seats to. The Golf floor is much the same as the Beetle one, so I'd try to get some cheapy seats from any '80's/'90's watercooled VW. Haven't got any pictures, but a man of your talents should be able to sort out what I mean... ;) Neil Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: drgouk on June 16, 2009, 10:36:39 am Hi Neil,
Thanks for the reply. My problem is that im trying to make the interior look old school. I have a pair of mexican seats and I am thinking I will remove the recliner and all the plastic crap and make new legs for the seat back, so it looks like a 72 down seat. Thanks. David Gouk Title: Re: Late Model ('73) Post by: ESH on June 16, 2009, 13:36:16 pm For Sal's car we are using the standard brackets that came with the seats and have welded mounts onto the existing pan so that the front edge of the seat sits at the same height as the stock one. The pictures show the type of mountings that are being used which incorporate a tilt mechanism.
