Title: If I did another project...
Post by: Fastbrit on January 03, 2007, 09:36:26 am
... what should it be?

Several house moves, change of domestic circumstance (oops...) and new old house project have meant no time or money to have something interesting around, other than the odd Porsche. So, when the house is done, and I also have a garage, what should I build? Race car, Looker, vintage (DON'T say Bus!!!) or??? Type 1? Type 3? What style? You guys know me, or some of you do, so come on, give me some ideas!  ;)

You amazed me one day with your nostalgic chop top !
I would go for a type I

I should imagine that something capable of a 12.99 and getting over to the DAS Drag Days and Bug-Ins would be a good start.  :)

Traditional Cal Look type 1 street car, no trim, with a few KS individual ideas.  ;)
Must be able to drive 100s miles, heaters, stereo. Then run 13/14s? How cool would that be??

I think its time for a 70's custom comeback.

Angle chop, portholes, fur swivel seats.  MAd paint

Whatever it will be, I bet it's gonna be pretty fast... ;D

pre cal-look..no doubt about it, Keith...u know, the tasteful approach ;D

Car is coming on, engine started...just need to adjust linkage on transmission.
Middle May would be a fine time to come. What do you think..too late?

This is fun, having others choose for you! I like Mr Ratto's ideas, but Andy's 'Buy back TLF 25' would be great, but I doubt it's for sale – or if so at a sensible price. In the meantime, there's the Subaru Legacy-motored T25 to sort (and the other little project I have stashed away...  ;D). Maybe I should do an orange Type 3 again... Decisions, decisions, but house comes first. If you could see the state of what passes for the kitchen floor now I've ripped out the old units! Cornish workmanship at its best. ::)

Keep 'em coming!

TLF 25 is on Volkszone for about £5000 complete but is also available without the engine for less, he is also willing to strip it of the plate although that is part of its history.

1. pre-looker-cause you should know how to do it with attitude ;D
2. 356 "looker": mixture between outlaw/cal look: with big type1 engine and some oldschool 5 lug mags-depends also on what´s left after building a house ::)

1963 Buick LaSabre Station wagen, 9 passenger, with 325 Wildcat engine, Dynoflo transmission, roof-mounted sky lights... what? Did I say something wrong? Hell, that's what I drove to school when my '67 was down for improvements. KS would be styling in that ride.

Others have been suggesting putting your car history in a blender and mixing them... How about mixing the three main topics of your books - into one car:

Cal Look Style + Big Engine + Coachbuilt Car

It surely must be what is closest to your heart, since you did all that research and all that writing... I say go for it!

I`m not sure who U are, or how you look.....but why just do the "CAR-THING"....don`t we amire the people as much as they cars...?
Why do another gasser-copy-spin-off-kind-a-car....why not do a makeover on the person.....just become a cal-look-a-like.....everybody can do a roof-chop.....it takes a man to have a nose-job.....

I picture you a tall, dark man....maybe you should go for a Darrel Vittone-look, lets say 1974....ish...
...or maybe a bucket of grease will make your hear look like the one that Lee Leighton had....if you are some kind of sqitzo.....maybe a look-a-like of the Schley Brothers could be something.

Ofcourse you should do it properly and also build a cal-look-a-like car too....

Or grow some decent beard and maybe a ponytail…and just look like the main man Keith Seume….he would probarbly come up with something that nobody had ever thought about….that`s car-wise…..

Good luck anyway……

Fusen

Pre-Aronson-'63-Style car, with correct, period-tuned motor, 32NDIX, single port, 88mm big bores, Racer Brown cam, H-case, 010 dist, couple of chrome doo-dads, Anchor-style header, ET mags, Bluestreaks, period tach, stock height, full bumpers and trim.
Or maybe a '67 done a la Don Crane-style, stock exterior, stock height, genuine Berms, 88 x 74 motor with Type 311 heads, 48IDAs, Anchor-header, early Berg linkage, etc.....
You know the recipe, just a matter of finding the right ingredients to make it taste good.

There's enough 12-11 sec Cal Look cars.  ::)

I can't agree any more, Jim.  It can be done on a budget, too, save for maybe the wheels.  A drag class I would love to see and be a part of.

Even though I was always brought up to believe Ghias were Beetles for girls (ONLY JOKING! :D :D), I have to admit that the number of great looking Ghias that I have seen can be counted on the fingers of one and a half hands. They are real difficult to get sitting right. Do you keep bumpers or delete them? Trim? Wheels? I lespecially oved the red and black one which Jim Kurlinski picked up about three years ago. Beautiful! Orange, sitting low and nose-down on Center Lines, plaid interior, IDA motor (naturally) and C/R trans, full set of black-faced VDO gauges, Momo Prototipo wheel.... Mmmm, sounds good already.

I built it for a customer 18 years ago , it's done about 100 miles since , as he works abroad and never drives it , it has a panelled dash , and would be ripe for some 70's treatment .

I am trying to nick it from him for a cheap price , then was going to put some gauges in the dash ( 70's style ) , get some 70's seats , change the decklid and valence back to 72 spec . I wasn't sure whether to fit upright headlight back onto the car , as I really like the look of the ' Rossi's '

I would make for a good 70's looker though , the car is still very solid , and hasn't deteriorated as it's been in a dry garage scince built .

IDA motor , close tranny ...

It's either that , or I try and find a mint 1303 and build a replica of John Dean's super clean 1303 ....

Either way Peter, your are heading for two VERY cool ideas here!
I have had the same idea as I have a 03 cabrio stashed away, but I'im unsure it would respond well to the “super dumper” look.

Keith I'd wish you built a late model looker, as It would pave the way for these cars into the mind of the average looker builder. Some seem to think they are "wrong"  ::)

Some of the late 70's and early 80's cars's , look mighty fine to me , as long as they were done tastfully  ;)

John Dean's super clean 1303 ....

This one is extremely nice for a 1303!! I was just talking about yesterday  ::)

But yeah, the real challenge is building a nice, tasteful, and tough late model looker! It will show that it is not necessary to do those darn early fender conversion that always look shite in my opinion, but to respect the era of your late looker and make good use out of it.

In particular Keith, i think you are a role model for others... You inspire and educate people (certainly of my generation) and i reckon for that reason it may be a very nice change to step away from the crowd and get challenged by a late model project. Think of what a successful outcome may put into motion!  ;)

Anyway, this thread is getting a lot of reactions and views but not much response from you  :P have you made up your mind yet?  ::)

... what should it be?

Several house moves, change of domestic circumstance (oops...) and new old house project have meant no time or money to have something interesting around, other than the odd Porsche. So, when the house is done, and I also have a garage, what should I build? Race car, Looker, vintage (DON'T say Bus!!!) or??? Type 1? Type 3? What style? You guys know me, or some of you do, so come on, give me some ideas!  ;)

Hey Keath, how is it goin?
long time no see

Not sure if you've seen my 67 for sale, why don't you save yourself the bother and all the waiting? and just buy my 67? you can even buy you old engine back out of flashback if you want...
Due to the move to the US, I've now decided that I'm going to sell your old engine, the 5 speed, BRMs... everything... do you know anyone?
Keep in touch
Chris Ashworth

Maybe something with no fenders...  Hairpins and I beam, 3 pedals and a nailhead.

Keith, I just read you article "Late in the day" in UltraVW. BRAVO!! I hope it makes an impact, as good late-model lookers are thin on the ground!!
Loved the "super-dumper" picture, but it looks way darker than other pictures I have seen of it? Was it repainted?

Now live as you learn, build a late-model  ;D

Keith has always loved a late model!
He did an orange 70-something Fastback in the 80's and shaved the bumpers off it.
Looked just like a lifeboat... Until he painted graphics on it. Then it became Fast Company, I think.
Personally I'm not a fan of Type 3s without bumpers I prefer a late model as it is. To me, without bumpers, they look a bit like the automotive equivelant of a cousin dater.

Still - bumpers or not - it was the best late model Type 3 around, well, except for the Hampshire Hog which I always loved.

I'm looking to stray from the air-cooled world on the next project !  Currently searching for a '62 Impala wagon - for the next Resto-Mod candidate!  Crossing over to the dark side (just for a while!  ;))

I had an original paint 66 Bel Air wagon in 95, with a brodix headed 406.  Thing ran 13.00's @ 110mph on radials, and had lots more potential.  4.10's are no fun without an overdrive trans for roadtrips.

SHIT, SHIT...SHIT....I jusr realized that U are Keith Seume....and stupid me tellin`you to make a cal-look-a-like of yourself....or who might be better to make a look-a-like than yourself...?

Fusen
