Hi,

I need some thoughts about some parts for a new engine.
The engine will go into an barndoor bus and the project is on budget. The aim is more torque than revs.
I have some parts laying around from my last 1776cc and some others bits which are fixed to use:
AS21 Case bored for 90,5 barrels, 94mm Mahle barrels for 82mm stroke, a used W125 cam with lifters and OEM 1,25 rockers. 5.5 CB rods with Chevy rod size

A friend of mine is ordering at vwparts.net so I am fixed what that shop offers. Two main elements need to be fixed.

CRANK:
The thoughts are to get an 78mm or 82mm crank from CB. I don`t want to get the engine to wide so 84mm is no option.
I will be very easy to build with the 78mm crank and chevy rod size and will be an narrow engine.
With the 82 crank freeing the case will need more attention and the engine will get wider so the enginetrim will need more attention/time.But more cc`s Wink

I was also thinking about an OEM welded crank. I read mainly good things about them BUT then I saw an 84mm crank live and was not very pleased with how it looked.
It was very "thin" at some points. Welding at the heart isn`t thsat welcome in my engineer mind...

HEADS:
Valve size should be 40 x 35,5

Options are:
Los banditos heads
CB 041
CB044

The heads will get an headjob so it`s only the base to start.
Never heared something about the Los banditos & CB041.
At the moment I am tending to 044 heads BARE/std bore.
I have also laying around 40mm manley valves and HD keepers/retainers, dual springs and so on. I would only need to buy manley 35,5 valves.
Maybe some could share some thoughts with me.

Thank ya and a happy new year!

I konw that los banditos need heavy porting, the ports are stock (if I'm correct).
good luck with the build Wink

hey,

why would a 82x90.5 engine be so wide? if you use B pistons and stock length rods it is as wide as stock. and the CR can be made lower with bigger CC's in the heads as well.

so why not go for an 82 with porsche rods? it is good torque as well.

just a tought, good luck with the built.

Thank `s for the replies!

@Volkskris: Porting is fun to me so no problem, I even seen that the ports are like OEM heads

@Nicolas: As said I already got the 5.5 rods so with the 82mm it will get wide. I have got 94mm B-pistons which will be cut down to fit in the 90,5mm bore in the existing case. At the moment I am more tending to the 78mm crank as it will be a dummy to build without much modifing the engine trim. The other thing in my mind is that the bus engine can`t be bigger than the on in my notch...

Head dicission tends heavily to 041 heads with 39x35.
Those are very cheap getable here in D:

The 39mm inletvalves will be replaced with 40mm Manley. Eventually even the exhaust valves for secure.
Then chamber, Porting and so on to have some fun time Wink

Felix

I used a very new thing to me. A Poll.
Tell me your thoughts about the crank choice for the above mentoined engine.
94mm B-pistons - 041 heads 40x35 - W125 - 5.5 rod`s with chevy bearing

Cheers,
and thank you for your views and thoughts!

Just my opinion(s) - Since the engine is going in a bus and you are most interested in low rpm torque, I would use the 82 mm crank.  You can use your 5.5 in rods with this crank, although I would rather use a shorter rod if possible. You may be able to slightly machine the piston tops slightly if more deck is needed and the engine gets too wide.  What compression ratio will you run? This will affect deck and engine width as well.  I would run a more conservative compression ratio on a bus as the vehicle is so heavy and the engine will be pushing a heavy bus.   I have no experience with piston top machining and I know some have success with it and others frown upon it, do some research and decide. Also, I think gearing will influence how hard the engine is working and how hot the engine runs if the fan speed is too low.

Since the engine will be a relatively lower rpm engine (5,500 rpm). I would think either CB's forged crank or a welded DPR stroker would work well judging from what I've read on this and other forums.  There are many experienced tuners that have used both of these cranks and have had excellent results and logevity with these cranks.  I have heard both positive and have seen and heard negative so again do your research.  I have a Berg forged 82 in my 2110 so I only have experience with this and a stock non cw vw forged crank and both of these are excellent for thier applications.

What would you like the engine life expectancy to be before you take it apart to rebuild?  I think in a bus,  milder cam profiles with more engine displacement (82mm) is better as the engine will have more low end torque due to its' size. Coupled with good flowing heads the engine would work well and last a long time if properly built, maintained, and tuned.  just my 2 cents.  Many things to consider! Best of luck with your project!
