Don't get me wrong, I understand the value of a truly unique and historical car... the Heb pictured is one example, or that VW38 that was restored over in Lithuania or wherever it was, anotther prime example.  Other more mainstream cars, like buses, deluxe or no, fetching $250K just scream out 'look at me' to the buyer; but hey, that's purely my opinion, and by no stretch do I preach it as gospel.  Lol.

Not much love for the Type 2 here apparantly. I can`t see $200,00 for the 23 window either. And I think the owner would have been hard pressed to get more than $100,000 out of it on the normal market. No matter how nice it is. Not too long ago my friend paid that for a RHD mostly original Barndoor Deluxe and that raised a lot of eyebrows but I think that was a better purchase than the grey Bus. That being said, I can see six figures for the Tar Babe or the Lightning Bug because of the rarity and history behind them. And Dave Rhoads` car could be worth a few buxks too. But maybe thats just my opinion...

The black '67 sedan... now THERE'S a good deal. Overly restored, wrong color coil, and other minor bits that can be easily changed over to correctness. But overall... not a bad price. The Bus deal was/is just a complete joke. But, to each their own, I guess.

Yes, it was at least double what it was worth but that`s ok. If it was mine and I sold it I would be loving it too.

This has happened a few times. Just look at the "Deluxe" Double cab that sold a few months ago for $70k, and the late split Westy that sold for $99k a couple years ago. These freak occurances have no bearing on the actual market value.

I think these two guys both had wives that said, "That's cute honey, I want that!". So they fought over it... Happy wife, happy life Wink

I dig type 2s. A mostly original, RHD Barndoor Deluxe is much more rare and desirable than the bus in question. Not to mention cooler. If I had 100,000 I would pick the barndoor all day long and not because its trendy or worth more; I just love early VWs especially if they are original. This grey bus is cool, but not 200 thou worth.

While I agree there are rarer buses out there, I don't think they would go for as much at Barrett-Jackson mostly due driveability ie the crashbox transaxle.
Having said that, I own a 1956 23-window and dream of owning a Barndoor Samba someday !
And Zach, no one would pay that kind of money for that Hebmuller, the suspension is broken !

Berg crank + 250 ATC + 200X ATC + trailer = $5500 - 25 years storage and upkeep - damages over time = -$5500 - wife giving you crap about selling that damn bus "you never drive it!" = -$220,000 ... then there's the restoration ...

I think you came out ahead on that deal, Tim! Cheesy
