Just wondering what spare wheels everyone is running ? The size of wheel and tyre combo. I have oem Gas burners but no spare wheel . Keeping in mind we probably all have skinny fronts wide rears , what is a good compromise in tyre size for a spare ? obviously not too big as needs to fit the wheel well. Just curious before I go and buy one.  |

I have a 145SR Michelin mounted on my Flat-Four BRM. I can run it on the front or the back if I have to.

I have a steel 5-lug Porsche wheel and 155 tire. 5.5" rim. I put the hubcap on so it looks cool.

Straight Time, you can either get another Gasburner wheel and mount a 145 or whatever size your front tires are. Or, use a steel wheel with the right lug pattern (don't know if yours is four or five lug). I'm in the process of doing the steel wheel option for my car.

I have a 155R 15 on a Flat-4 BRM. I have only used it twice, but it sure came in handy. Once on the back and once on the front. It got me home and it is still fresh enough to use again if needed. If you drive long distances it's good to have a spare. I had to use it in 2000 on my way back from Denver. Thank God I had a spare...

Thanks all for advice.
Just wondering if got a flat on the rear and had to use the spare , would there be any adverse effects on the axles or any other components due to one side of the car having a smaller rolling radius ?

Nope, having a open diff makes up for that.
A 165 on a 5.5 rim is the max that will fit in the well.

I originally bought a 165 for my spare, very close copy of a Firestone, and it didn't want to go in the well. My 155 goes in snugly. Depends on the tire, I guess. |

I originally bought a 165 for my spare, very close copy of a Firestone, and it didn't want to go in the well. My 155 goes in snugly. Depends on the tire, I guess. Could be. I was just able to jam a 165 on a 5.5" rim in my old 67. It was a VERY tight fit. Now I use a 145 on a 4.5, same as I have on the front, and it will work on the rear in a pinch. It does have a bit of room to flop around in the well though. |

Looks nice Phil. How much did Coker get you for? I got my 165's from Jeg's, they were $12 a tire cheaper and $25 less to ship than Coker, and they were shipped from the same place! Where was that XZX made? The ones I got today were made in Serbia, my others were made in France.

For my Mexican Beetle, I use one of my Yokohama 165/15 snow tires. That didn't fit, so I broke out the angle grinder and hacked off a bit of the tread on the corner. My other car with the wide Fuchs has an original 4½" Fuchs with one of the Mexican Beetle's original 155s. Or, "PISSBORIS" as KS proclaimed when he saw it.  This tire is exactly the same dia as my rear 215/60/15s, so the ZF is happy when I need it. Tom, I used to be like you. Guess how I changed my mind? |

I have a 155 in there coz it works on the front end and is pretty close to the 26 diameter I run out back . But whatever you do get a spare in there , when my 67 was recently hit head on by an idiot driver i believe the spare took most of the impact , I shudder to think what it would have been like without it  |

Or with   The 67 was stationary and was hit at an estimated 35 -> 40 mpg , these old dubs can take it , just rather it didn't have too  |
