I remember waaay back in the days of the original Cal Look Forum the term Sweep The Floor motor, possibly a Mark Herbert term, but I think Jim Ratto had a hand in it somewhere too! Smiley
Anyway, I was at my parents house today, sorting out some boxes in the garage and I came across a load of parts. I knew I'd got a load of bits but I wasn't exactly sure what, but seems like I've got pretty much everything to build a motor! Grin

Here's what I've found:
Bugpack 82mm crank, VW journal out of my old 2180 race motor. Journals reground on mains and big ends.
Lightened flywheel - how light I'm not sure, but it went with the crank!
Kennedy Stage 2 clutch and various discs.
Berg Chromoly gland nut
Mahle 94B pistons and barrels, quite a few of them!
Bugpack rebuilt and clearanced VW rods, brand new still boxed
Engle 130 cam with aluminium gear (didn't even know I'd got this!) Pretty sure there's a Bugpack 4062 or 4063 around somewhere too.
Lifters are new but no idea what brand - in an orange box?
Berg Chromoly pushrods and I think a set of Empi ones too.
Various rockers, 1.25, and two more sets that I think are 1.4 and 1.5's, all on bolt up shafts.
041 heads with 40x35.5mm valves and dual springs, cut for 90.5/92mm pistons, compression I can't remember but fairly high I think - maybe 12:1?
1 5/8" merged headers in stainless and coated mild steel versions, dual QPs and a turbo muffler.
40IDFs, 48 IDAs, another pair of 48's but can't remember if they're IDFs or DRLAs.
Wide mouth pushrod tubes.
German 009 with Pertronix
Type 4 oil cooler
I've got a 1600 short block in the back of my garage which could donate the case if it checks out ok, along with distributor drive, cam gear, oil slinger etc. I pinched the heads and P&Cs off it years ago for another motor and can't remember why I took this one out. Roll Eyes

It looks like I've got the bits to put together a quite entertaining street 2276. The car it'll probably end up in is a basically stock weight late '60's bug with a later 1300 gearbox (4.375 R&P). I know I'll need to have the case machined for the bigger barrels, and the heads will also need opening up for the 94's. A line bore is also probably a good idea, as is full flow oiling. I think I've got a deep sump somewhere, if not I'll have to get another one.

So, I'm after a bit of advice, mainly about the heads. Looking at Rick M's open chamber head thread, once my heads have been opened out to 94mm, could I take some material out of the combustion chamber to drop the compression a bit? If so, what to? 9:1?
Which rockers should I use, and with which cam?
Who's oil pump should I use, and what size? Which cover?
Anything else I've forgotten? Huh

Sounds like cheap fun! Those Bugpack cams are on the small size as I remember, the 130x1.25 gets my vote. 10+:1 will really make it come alive.

Depending upon whether the heads are ported, I'd run the 130 cam with either 1.1's or your 1.25's.  I'd run IDA's, but I'd try to locate a set of 40mm vents.  If you don't have 40's, 37's would work well.  And with that cam I'd aim for 10 to 1.  It should be fun!

X2 with the IDA's  , very similar to my motor you'll destroy a STD box with that combo  Wink
Just don't use an old case neil , dig a little deeper at you parents and find the cash for a new case  Grin
under the bed a good place to look , old mattresses etc

Sounds like a nice sweep the floor build.

Too bad I could not come with such a beast.  The best I could do is a cast stroker combo, 82x90, w110, 041 heads and breathing through some old Kads.  Perfect for a friends bus.

Cheap is the general idea Zach, and anything is going to be more fun than the temporary 1500 in my street car - it's painfully slow! I could rebuild my 15-second 1600 but this wouldn't cost much more I hope, just the machining costs on the case and heads extra. Would 10:1 compression work on pump gas?

Depending upon whether the heads are ported, I'd run the 130 cam with either 1.1's or your 1.25's.  I'd run IDA's, but I'd try to locate a set of 40mm vents.  If you don't have 40's, 37's would work well.  And with that cam I'd aim for 10 to 1.  It should be fun!

The heads are ported, my dad did them a while back.We just copied what we'd seen in books and magazines! I've got 40 vents to go in the IDAs, just got to find them!

Cheers Glenn, I might have to look into putting a superdiff into the stock box then, I've got one of them that I picked up a few years ago too! I'd love to use a new case, but I really can't afford it and if this case can go again then it's not cost anything. Even if it just lasts a couple of years of weekend driving I can save for a new case then. All that's under the bed is dust!

Absolutely Matt! As long as you bring your spanners as well as the broom to put this thing together - most of the parts are out of motors I've built and then broken...
