Fantastic times for the buggy.

I'm guessing you are running stainless valves? Counterweight crank?

Hi!
I get a lot of questions what's in the motor so I list below. Nothing fancy, just meticulous in balancing and measuring/checking everything when assembling and making sure enough oil pressure on the runs.

Original case, original crank, original unlightened flywheel , Stage 2 with Daikin disc, SCAT rods, Mahle pistons, original cylinders, original unported heads with valve job, 8,0:1 static compression, original valves 35,5x32 mm, Otteva 90 springs with titanium retainers, manton pushrods, 1,1 rockers exhaust, 1,25 intake, Engle TCS 30 cam, big plenums (3x total engine volume i.e. 2,4 liters per side), single 50mm throttle body, water intercooler, Airwerks S200SX 50/62 mm turbo, E85 and 30-36 PSI of boost. FuelTech FT 500 with 2 valve CO2 boostcontroller set up, sequential ignition with 4xLS 2 coils.

Hi Johan,
Do you 'street it' or is this now pretty much a race car only spec? Just wondering what its like 'off cam/boost' and if you still use the car to get to the shops..?

It is so nice to see and for most us (including me) the simple and basic setup you have.
I know, many questions from all of us, here comes some more.

- Original VW cylinder studs?
- Copper gasket or just straight std?
- The oil and fuel inline filters you have, where did you source them?
- I think it is a CB dry sump pump, any porting done to it?
- Oil tank is your own, if I got it right? Happy with it or you intend to do any modifications to it during the winter?

Then I wish to add a fact for your list, as I happen to know that you did chose the SCAT rods with the larger 3/8" bolts.

Hi all!

It's so nice with all the positive feedback I get - thanks! The thought behind the 1600 Challenge and my engine is to use what many of us have "laying around in the workshop/garage" and with that making it easy to come out and race at a normal expense. The engine itself is very low cost, as are the thoughts behind its configuration but there are some things that of course do cost and that I wouldn't have made the times I have run without. The FT500, the turbo and most important - the mapping by a professional mapper.

The car is not driven in the streets - only race track but off cam/boost it is almost like any other 1600.

- I use original 10 mm head studs torqued to original specifications
- No copper gaskets - all surfaces machined to be completely straight/flat
- One oil filter between pump and engine case enter and one oil filter between pump and dry sump tank - I use an un modified CB dry sump pump that is tapped so I exit through the oil pump cover. I only use the pressure relief closest to the flywheel with a modified front relief spring and a schim. Important on E85 is that it goes into the oil as we do not run enough high oil temperature, so oil change every 4 -6 passes (the oil can then be re-used after heating up and vaporizing out the E85). The oil pick up in the case is modified and turns backwards in the engine to pick up oil where the G-forces puts it Smiley.
- The fuel filter is mounted close to the engine on the pressure side from the pump which is located in the front just behind the gas tank.
- Dry sump tank is ok, but will install a couple of baffles in it for more foaming prevention. Run 8 liters of oil in total.

Wow, so you are using original VW valves  Shocked
As I say, great work and I'm now looking at my spare 043 headed twinport motor in a very different way now!

I’ll write this in English as we have many readers around the world. The Challenge for 2020 is now officially over. As we all know, Covid-19 made this year not come out the way many of us thought and wanted, but still we have managed to run some nice 1/8 mile passes and producing time slips.
So – who are the winners then:
In power adder class – Niklas Haglund who ran a mind blowing 6,0598@186,19 km/h (115,79 mph) with runner up Johan Dryselius with a 6,0624@185,85 km/h (115,57 mph). The distance between the two was 26 thousands of a second and 13,4 cm (5,28 inches) over the finish line! Niklas time is also the quickest 1584cc run of all times!
In NA class – Johannes Person who ran a 8,6279@123,35 km/h (76,71 mph) with runner up Niklas Grahn with a 9,9448@109,56 (68,13 mph).

Congrats to both winners – I will personally deliver a bottle of ‘bubbly’ to them the next time we meet! Well done!

I also want to acknowledge the amazing time run by Fabio Peciulis and the CrushKiller team in Brazil who ran a 6,38@173 km/h (107,59 mph) in a power added, full bodied, full weight Type 1!

I know there are many more builds ongoing, so hopefully next year there will be many more time slips produced. The time for the Swedish 2021 Challenge will be April 1st to 30th of September.

As the interest for this is growing around the world with the CrushKiller team in Brazil, Jay Turncock’s initiative in UK and with good cheering from Mario Velotta Jr. (the Dub Shop) in US – I plan to (exact details to be worked out) create a World 1600 Challenge list so we can gather time slips from all over the world into one place. The time slips can of course be produced at any time of the year. My thought is to have 4 classes: Power Adder Race, Power Adder Street, NA Race and NA Street where the ‘Race’ would be a car basically built for racing and ‘Street’ more of a ‘standard’ car. No exact definitions – keep it simple and up to the owner to ‘classify’ the car – remember it’s for the fun of it and to get more people out to race. I’ll be back on this – until then – keep on racing and building and remember – ‘The pedal to the metal and never look back’!

Hi!
Great that we are an inspiration to you!
I run a Finnish Dogring gearset from Kuplapaya:
3.40, 2.00, 1,53, 1,15 with 3.88 R&P. I think Niklas run the same gear ratio.

Thanks Johan , I always get inspired when I see people think outside the box . I think making a lot of power out of small cc engine is more rewarding than the usual big cc cookie cutter engines that everyone builds .

Hi!

The small ones do have a benefit over bigger ones as they are more stable not having the long stroke, not so long pushrods, thick cylinder walls and a lot of material 'inside' the head studs and it amazes me the type of power one can get out of basically original parts!

Even if the official challenge is over for 2020 - Johannes Persson ran a great 8,50@128,82 km/h at the No Prep event in Malmö this past weekend!

Congrats Johannes to a great achievement!

I'm finishing up the work with a World 1600 Challenge List - more information to come - stay tuned.

Thanks for your efforts to get this started Cool  I registered to watch what happens and maybe do something of a budget build for fun if i find enough parts in the junk pile Wink Grin

I am another "Junk Man".......
I know I have some 1584 cc parts, a large screwblower meant for a VR6 but what the heck, it might fit a 1584 too?
Some EFI´s...... injectors, intercoolers....
Hmmm, I have a 1967 street car with cage too, just waiting to be revived......
Time will tell if this goes from theory and dream in to 2021 participation.

Fun dreams in any case!
I love what you Micke, Johan and now Trond has done to make it happen. THANKS!

Frallan!
Many of the parts in my engine would be considered 'junk' too as most of it is from an old, oily, dirty engine that was standing for years in the back of my garage (actually two of them so I have some spare junk) - then cleaned up, some machining and changing of stuff and voila - a small cheap powerhouse that I could never dream of would take me down the ¼ mile in mid 9's!
Go for it - they tolerate a lot of abuse!
