Hi,

Can anybody tell me if there is a definite way to determine if my wheels are streetweight or raceweight? Here's a picture of one of the wheels.

I have tried to measure the thickness (at the centre) and it's as good as 7mm.

I've heard people say streetweight have countersunk bolt holes - is this true?

My wheels were bought from WPS around 2001 for my normal weight, road-going 67 bug.

Thank you,

Mike

Race weights are .125" thick and street weights are .190" thick. It is true that the street wheels have countersunk lug holes. Race wheels have countersunk washers and it appears that these wheels had these washers on them at some point.

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know if any streetweight erco's were made that weren't countersunk? The reason I ask is that around the same time I had ERCO's on my 67 kombi (specially ordered for a bus via Eric) and these weren't countersunk (on the wheel) and used countersunk washers.

Confusing eh?

Thank you,

Mike

Maybe an easier question to answer....

- Do all ERCO's have two-piece centres? As shown in the picture below?

I do not know if any street ercos were non countersunk. I suppose it is possible because those wheels can be somewhat custom ordered. Ercos are made from an outer and inner wheel half and welded or bolted together so they should all have two pieces joining in the center.

So, it looks like you need to buy the countersunk washers or go to a local machinst and have the wheels countersunk to match the lugnuts you plan on using. Are you putting these wheels on your beetle? I ran them on my car for a few years. Its a good look.

Hi Lawrence and thanks for the reply.

I agree they are a fantastic look - they used to be on my old 67 bug Smiley

I am in fact selling the wheels - and was trying to determine what "weight" they were as a possible buyer was considering putting them on their bus.

I think they are race-weight.

So if anybody wants to buy a set of 3.5" bubble ERCO's... Smiley

Thanks,

Mike
