I'm betting it's a Thrush muffler bolted to the running board so that Hefler could claim contingency money due to any car that ran a Thrush muffler in competition. Contingency sponsorship is why cars from that era ran so many decals, but other manufacturers decreed you had to run the part to claim any prize money.
That makes sense. Just when you think you've seen it all... It's still all about the money........ I'm afraid you're right

yes some similar stuff , but no flared fenders , no air scopp on the rear quater ip 2 don't have horn grills and it look like the car had brake drums and ip 2 had just 356 porsche brake drums with the outer edges milled off in front after FDY was sold , the ip 2 was painted white again , who know maybe it's the car??

I don't think it's IP2, but check out the rear side window shape - is this the mystery gasser in KS's book?

I think you're right Keith, now I look at the two side by side. The back of the rear side windows on both cars look to have a jerky direction change, not a smooth curve like a stock window (or the Goss chop for that matter), but now it seems that both are different and still not great curves!

Nico & Speedwell....Sorry I didn't reply earlier sbout Bug Magik. I live about three hours away from Scooter's shop and would have to take a day off from work to go see him and ask him but I think it would be worth it! I haven't been there for two years or so. When I last was at his shop I told him that he should take the car back out and even just display it at the Bug Jam in Dade City Florida (biggest VW show on the East Coast). He said and thought that no one would be interested in seeing his old race car because the paint isn't perfect anymore and it has aged a bit (the paint is laquer and has cracked over time). I told him "NO!" that people would LOVE to see his car again!! He appreciated my enthusiasm and interest but never did anything with the car. It just sits in his shop. Interesting thing about the paint job......He told me it was done by a hippie / artist that used to hang around his shop sometimes. If you look at the artwork on the car it isn't symetric. If you look at the front of the car the front fender art is different from one side to the other. The art is unique as you look at the different parts of the car. Scooter didn't tell him how to paint it, he just let him do his thing on the car. The "artist" also painted VW murals on the inside walls of the shop as well and they are still there, dirty but still there. I'll call him and see if i can talk with him.

The thing that made me ask was that chop job looks very very similar to IP2. Things like wings and drums could have been replaced?

Sorry, there are just too many differences, the most noteworthy being: a) IP2 had the windshield wiper bosses removed from the scuttle – this car has them b) The side window profile is all wrong c) The windshield shape is all wrong d) The size of the sunroof is different e) The white car looks like it started life as an Oval-window judging from the windshield pillars... etc etc...

All you need is a little parking lot of some free space in a flat field to have fun.
