Cal Look Split Window
«

I have been semi-seriously looking for a new project and came across a '52 Split that's for sale..
I was originally looking for something around 10 years younger, but on the other hand the body work (labour cost as I am not going to do rust repairs myself) and paint will cost the same to all Beetles, so maybe it would be more worthwhile to spend it to older car..
Somehow figuring out the layout for cool Cal Look Split is more difficult than to the early 60's car that I had originally in my mind. The dash is especially difficult area where my imagination shoots blanks.. Having pods to house set of VDOs has been done in both iconic Splits but doing something different and keeping it Cal Look and not turn it to Custom
Choosing colour is also difficult, but have few ideas. Somehow bright colours seem odd, but don't know why.
I don't know why Split would be more difficult but maybe it is so since there has only been two famous examples in early days of the Look and not a many more since?
Let's see some examples of Splits (and Zwitters) if you have them.. Other than the Buehler or Mahaffey/Craig cars too.

No issue. Just meant at a fun poke. Marc and me joke about his car. He's owned it since the early 70's but some people out there still call it "Billy's car". Your comment was just the opposite. Thought it was kind of funny.

Choosing colour is also difficult, but have few ideas. Somehow bright colours seem odd, but don't know why.

Well, while you were away from the scene the original colours became popular. My car won't be the original Chesnut Brown for sure..

Wow, looking exclusively at the stock color chart, those are some challenging colors to pick from. If not the Chestnut Brown, what color are you leaning towards?

I decided a long time ago to paint my '51 in Porsche Conda Green, like the Mahaffey/Craig car, although I've owned it for five years now and done nothing to it at all! I'm just paranoid about someone getting there first!
I like the late '60's early '70s Porsche colours - they fit the era of cal look that I like.

What I meant that the fashion changed which necessarily wasn't all good as it killed a lot of innovation and introduced a lot more rules. What I have to do is sort of try to figure out what you would have done in 1979 and that wasn't looking at the '52 color chart and choosing from one of 5 colours

I know what you mean, I'm not going to build a full replica, but something that takes inspiration from it. I mean, how far can you go with a green split bug on BRMs?!

Not got too many pic's yet as I'm still playing with it
(read boiling the hide's off it as much as posible)
the car is a constant work in progress and will never be finished as I like to tinker with thing's a bit
At the moment its spoting a 2165 with about 1500 miles on it , married up to a Cogbox gearbox , the body's a 49 and pan is oval .
Going to pull the motor over the winter and up thing's a little with new cam better con rod's and hopefully a bit of an increase in power
Interior is sparse with VDO gauge cluster shift light and beard seat's .

I'm sure you will work out a very cool car on a splitwindow basis. Go for it, dare to be different.
