D.B.O. Not a club; a state of mind.

« on: June 16, 2010, 14:33:42 pm »

Sorry for the delay, but it's been rather hectic. This year's VW Classic was, no doubt, huge. So many cars, so many people, all present... at one venue.

It was also the morning after we celebrated a surprise birthday party for our founding member, Mark Ramirez.

Over thirty years later, and Mark is still building nice Cal Lookers. Roy's car... front and center.

Pip's Split.

Scott's eye pleasing Ghia and a partial view of some Panzers.

One of the best Type 3 Squarebacks I've ever seen. Less is more... it's not just a phrase, it's a reality.

Our own Steve Wilkerson took first place in his class with his early convertible.

I stayed for the the awards announcement, so they let me take Steve's plaque home to give to him.
Congrats, Steve!

Ran into an old fellow DEEK in the car show area. And Tom still, like most of us, kept his club jacket.

We both still have the same Wolfsburg crest patch... equally cool; another DEEK with their original membership card.

We don't need no stinking air conditioning system... we have RAGTOPS! Tod's car from a different perspective, such that it is.

No shortage of Splits, as to be expected.

Forgot the owner's name of this vehicle, but I'm told it belongs to an ex-D.K.P. member.

Easily, the nicest example of one, these days. In So Cal, these were seen on the roads quite a bit when they were new. Now, a rare sight.

Worm gets in touch with his inner-funksmanship. Yes, the Mothership has landed. So, put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip, & come aboard the Mothership.

Mmm, convertibles. They were everywhere.

Randy's Kampfwagen.

My personal vote for the coach built division.

One of the nicest colors, ever, by VW... Sea Sand. Brought to you by Darrell from D.K.P.

'65 for sale.

The Weiss power cosmic.

Zach drove Ass Hull's '67 out from AZ. He also parked with us DEEKS.

The cabin.

This giant Hot Wheels car was in the Panzers' midst. I love Art's car... SO cool.

Steve's Split is many things. Timeless is always the paramount one that comes to mind, however.

Tidy engine.

After I shot this Bus, I noticed that there were these really neat and lifelike Type 1 toy models in the foreground. Crazy.

This picture represents something to me; the fact that the three owners are long time friends because of Cal Look VWs.

Speaking of friends, my best friend won first place for his gorgeous 1962 Type 1 convertible. Congrats, Bob!

I had the privilege of preparing this car for the event.

If you ever get a chance, kindly view the undercarriage and every corner of this wonderful car. Such a quality build.

Meanwhile, this flying contraption was hovering above the entire event, compiling pictures via remote control.

After he landed it, I talked to him about his aircraft. Quite impressive and expensive, too.

Faster than a 25hp. VW engine! Able to go anywhere! It's... it's... wait. Carlos, you got in my shot of Rayburn.

Just incredibly beautiful.

And... the lowlight Ghia's engine. WOW. Well done, again, Mr. Pip!

D.K.P. gets their cake and eats it, too. Another fine example of Mr. Rayburn's artwork.

DEEKS!

More.

MORE.

Bob's younger brother, Henry, took second place for '67 sedan. Congrats, Henry! Known him since he was eight.

Stephan places the classic Hot VWs poster on it's stand. John provides the TAA-DAA. Well done, John... well done.

Another view.

Panzers.

There were so many of 'em that I had to switch lenses to capture this shot.

More Panzers.

Even more.

Still, more.

D.H.K. presented D.K.P. with this nice plaque.

Our own Mark Ramirez found himself on there, too.

My favorite engine bay, that day.

Really liked this late model.

John numbers a one off D.K.P. bag.

Our own Ernie Barron took first place for his class of Ghia convertible. Congrats, Ernie!

Read the entry form, closely. What a DEEK.

The drive home. The End.

Thank you, everyone, for the fun day in the California sun. I have a few more pictures that I'll get post up in the next couple of days 'cause I'm busy with graduations, this week; my friends' kids and my oldest son... along with the grad parties to go along with them.

Actually, the interior of Tod's car is water cooled thanks to the Verizon Amphitheater sprinkler system  Cheesy

There used to be this little gremmie kid that would ride his BMX bike over to my parents house and watch me wrench on my '67. I was probably about 19 and he must have been about 15. He used bug me about what I was doing and how he wanted to build his own Cal Look car. I put up with him 'cause he would hand me wrenches when I was under the car and he was an extra set of hands when I needed them. I didn't know at the time that the gremmie would become a life long friend. His name?? Greg Brinton.

I've known Greg longer than any of the Deeks.

Why am I bringing it up? The bike that Carlos is riding is the same bike that Greg would pedal over to my parents house. A bit of Cal-Look history on 2 wheels.  Wink

Read the entry form, closely. What a DEEK.

Class: None  Huh

I would have put

Class: Low  Grin

It was amazing to see Diana out there.. we all knew how sick she was. We were very glad to see her.

I thought about that... but then resigned myself to the fact that I just don't have any. So, I went with none.

Yes, that made my day when she said that she was gonna tough it out and go. She loves car events and didn't want to miss out. And because she's been spoiling me for eight years, it would've been rather empty not having her present.

Thanks, everyone, for the nice words. Had a blast talking to and seeing you all.
