An early birthday present.....The real deal! Original blueprints for the 88mm Mahle biral cylinders, dated April 1971. Signed and approved by Joe and Darrell Vittone. That's awesome and a clear perspective on history. How funny it is that people freak out about using Chinese parts in Volkswagen engines nowadays. Here's something to ponder. Those parts from that blueprint were made in Japan and in the late '60s and early '70s Japanese-made things were almost universally reviled as cheap and low quality. In retrospect, how many of us would turn up our noses at a set of NOS Empi Biral barrels? I sure wouldn't. Anyone who says they would is either ignorant or foolishly proud. This far along we've forgotten about Japan's post-war manufacturing image and see these parts as they are: high quality. Like the Japanese the Chinese are as capable as any other nation in the world at making quality items. What holds China's image back is that importers often specify the lowest cost/quality so they can make a quick buck on huge markup. I've seen some absolutely stunning parts come out of China. They rival the quality of parts that came out of Western Europe or the US. It's a matter of how not if China's quality evolves over the next decade. If the pistons and liners those blueprints made are any indicator then we're in for a welcome surprise. |

Nice repro handle! I have 3 DDS shifters and all of the handles have a little crack. I put the best one on the shifter in my car. I always semi cautiously shift though, in fear of breaking it off in my hand. Good mojo though, worth it. |

Where Volkswagen draws the distinction is when other parties use the brand name to promote their own business (i.e. naming your shop with the maker's trademarked words). Shops can advertise that they repair or sell parts for Volkswagens (and Saabs and Chevrolets and whatever) but can't use any of the trademarked words (Clem's VW Repair for example) in their business names or use the makers' logos in their advertisements without Volkswagen's consent.
The previous comments were clearly tongue in cheek, but none the less, I don't see how clever names such as "Vee Dub Parts" hurts Volkswagens bottom line one iota. They're just being assholes, and that will keep my butt out of any new VW. I suspect the website: vwparts.net was the problem. There was a company called Virtual Worx that had the domain VW.org and had to give it up as well. |
