How difficult would it be for a home-mechanic to change 4th gear in a swing-axle, or do i need a specialist with the right tools. (press, etc).

Besides a press, you need a fixture to access the two forward shift forks' bolts so you can adjust them.  This is either a specially made fixture, or an old case hacked apart.

When you get the gearbox that far apart, it's foolish to not renew any other parts that are worn.
