a pearlwhite '63 1500S notchback: SPRINTSTARS

Hi guys,
I picked up my new project last weekend. I’ve been looking for a notchback quite some time now and this car is a nice project for me. The work that has to be done are things that I can manage myself, I hope.
Okay, here it goes: It’s a pearlwhite vw notchback 1500S 10/63. Because it’s an early S it features the pushbutton dash, red needle gauges and the wide 5 bolt pattern.
Good points:
Matching numbers
A few extra options: black painted roof, passenger door mirror, armrest in the backseat
Interior is complete and original, headliner is perfect, no rips. No rips in the seats
It’s still on 6 volts, don’t know if this is a good thing, new battery installed
Rear fenders are rustfree
Every option that makes a “S” model special is still on the car! Chrome parts, pop outs, interior, badges, engine,…
Bumpers have no dents and the chrome is very nice for it’s age.
Bad points:
Rust on the front fenders and the doors and a small rust spot on the decklid.
Nasty stains on the seats, hope I can fix it.
Cheap aftermarket floorcarpet and the wrong colour
Starter is broken
Exhaust is rusty
Some rust on the doorhandles
… and probably some other stuff I will find out during the build
Okay, the plans are very simple. Because my beetle sports a hot engine and a short gearbox I was looking for a cruiser for the family. I just became a dad since a few months and I have a softspot for the notchback for a while now. It looks like a very nice family cruiser and that it will be! First things first, fix the starter, get it through the technical inspection, clean it and give it the right stance.
In the meanwhile saving up for my wishlist:
A nice german weave carpet set, vintage shifter and steering wheel, some period correct gauges, 356 rims, tires,…
Don’t know what to do with the paintjob, I guess I will repair the fenders and the door and have it repainted and later on give it a decent full repaint that she deserves.
I’m at work now, pictures follow this evening.
The engine stays stock for now, just install a nice exhaust system. Later on I was thinking to do something oldskool with the engine. Not IDA style but really early style like the sechs volt club…
I know it isn’t a pied moulé engine but I like the look of those engines and I want to do something like that. I don’t need massive hp, if I want to break gearboxes I just hop in my beetle and drive the hell out of it.
Stay tuned for more,
Dem

Hi Peter,
No, it's a german car. I drove 1000 kms to pick it up last weekend but it's well worth it I believe. I went to see 5 or 6 cars here in Belgium and the Netherlands but unfortunately none of them were my cup of tea.
LAst night I removed the broken starter, this thursday I have a new one. I also removed the backseat to see if I could clean the nasty stains... I included a picture. I really would like to save them because they are barely used, no rips and stuff like that.
If someone have some sort of a magic trick to clean them I really would like to know, thx!

soap and water or a mild carpetcleaner would work, but try it on a less visible place to see what it does.
and why not put it on BRM's. it would be a nice contrast with the white and be cool with the black roof?

Ahh, lovely cloth interior
No need to re-send me that email I asked about earlier
Unfortunately, I don't know of a product that will clean cloth, it's much harder to clean than vinyl. I've even seen water leave a "stain" on some cloths
Be very careful, and like Nicolas said, test it on a hidden area first.
BRM's sound like a great choice

Nice ride!
A "white" car with "black" roof is screaming for some black on the rims! BRMs, GasBurner, Fuchs would be a good choice I think...
This topic developes to a "What rims for the notch?" - voting!

yeah I know, I'm a fuchs alloy sucker myself, I have them on my beetle so I'm struggling with the idea...
first of all, then I have two cars with the same wheels, but hey, they are sexy!
second, the car is wide 5, so I have to convert it to discbrake and other drums, that means extra costs!
Since I'm trying to make this car look cool with a small budget I think I will go for the 356 wheels.
4.5 in the front, 5.5 in the back, painted porsche grey, satin black drums, no hubcaps and I really would love to have wide o ovals in the back, but I'm affraid that's not possible.

But it´s 150€ for a set of 4, not each as I understand!

yes, but sit down before you read the price...
the colors available are #87 mesh red - #74 blue cord - #71 brown cord
and its $200 per yard... on average complete front & rear seats need 5 to 6 yards depending on model
( check with who is going to sew the covers for you before you make a purchase... )

5-6 yards?? No way, unless you do the
entire
seat with it. If it's just the tops like in the pics, then you could do it with 3 yards.

some stitchers are on the glue they spray, that's why I said ( check with who is going to sew the covers for you before you make a purchase... ) I don't sew so I'm only going by what others have ordered in the past... someone loose with their patterns can use that much material and waist allot...
