does anyone now if a golf 1 GTI steering wheel (3 spoke version) fits on the steering column from a mexican beetle?

It should.  They fit the 73+ stuff, as far as I know.

Yes this model from 76 to 80 GTI fit VWs with "small diameter" steering column : from 1303 to early Golf Mk2. It looks good on plastic dash pad beetles. I'm not sure but I guess mexican beetles with ball joint front axle have the small steering column too. Don't know if you can find one easily in the US though, I can measure the diameter of the mounting for you if you want to be sure it fits.

Sometimes people ask crazy prices for this, saying this is very rare (I saw some at 200€ Shocked). You are in Belgium, they often pop on internet between 100 and 150€, be patient and you may find one for a decent price. I bought mine 30€ but it was almost 7 years ago.  Roll Eyes
Try ebay, leboncoin.fr, kapaza.be...
