Anybody watching Barrett Jackson today? Very nice '63 mouse grey & white 23 window bus that was around during Classic weekend. I think the owner was asking around 110k. Just sold for 198k. Amazing.

It's just a Bus... what's the big deal? Why do people think they're worth so much? Was this one plated in some precious metal(s)?

Not only that, John Rayburn painted it with a Tester's model paint brush and water color paints!

On Friday, there were a number of VWs on the block, and they did not sell for anything close to that number! Did someone over-pay for that bus?

I have been around VW's all my life and traveled across this beautiful country in a bus but I would have to hit the powerball and hit a bong pretty hard before I could pay that kind of money for a VW, or any car for that matter. Good God

I'm struggling to see the logic that deems a less than 50 year old cheap car that was produced in the hundreds of thousands (deluxes specifically), a good investment at a couple hundred grand. Talk about more money than brains.

BJ auctions are simply FREAKSHOWS to me. Ever since those auctions several yaers ago when on Saturday night near everything is going for multiple hundreds of thousands and Million$... I mean come on, REALLY?
The perfect example for me weas the orange '70 Hemi Cuda convertible that went for $4 million ... then they interviewed the guy months later and he claims, "oh yeah, I drive the car ..."
We had a customer 3 or 4 years ago ... he had gone, or at least had his 'buyer' go to the auction with a list of cars he wanted, "Just buy them."
One was a red, lowered, early '60s bus ... wheels, probably a 1776 to 1914 (by the way it ran) with IDFs, semi-custom interior, safari windows, blah, blah, blah ... made a list about 1 1/2 pages of what was wrong with it. I spent about 6-7 days on it making it
drivable
so he and his buddies could take it out for pizza on the odd afternoon.
He had paid over $50K for it! And it had all those problems! WTF?
We just called it the "50K"; did what he asked and sent it down the road.
Some people just have more money than sense, at least from my perspective. To him, it was his pizza bus!
Heard a couple years ago it was back at BJ ... think he got about $30K for it ... "But the pizza was GREAT!", I hope. LMAO
So the answer is, there is NO logic or rational thought that produces these results, only greed.
BUT! Congratulations to the former owner!

It is a nice Bus but the color was wrong and it did go for WAY more than it was worth in the real world. There is a thread on The Samba about it if you want to know more. And by the way, pretty much any early deluxe bus is rarer and more valuable then a 67 Bug. That`s not to say I don`t love 67`s (Or any other years). Its lust the facts.

Really nice 67 but $15,000? Seems a little high too. As did the Thing that just sold for 31,000. They did`nt show the 68 Bus but I`m sure it went for too much also.

That bus is nice, but that is really expensive. I bet it never looked that perfect from the factory. The interior description is pretty funny, "balsamic gray" interior, haha yeah its the same color as salad dressing.

I didn't see it, but I have to imagine that there were a couple of bidders who got caught up in the moment on an impulse buy or some sort of an emotional connection. That price is amazing. And at the end of the day, its still a Volkswagen.

sooo...you think that 15k is too high...?? most builders today get 10k just for paint..!! you had to see the car in person....sweet is all I can say..... if I had the cash in pocket that black 67 would have a nice home with a lifetime of sweet caressing...LOL

Well, I don't know. Depends of the perspective. If people pay more for cars like Prius, then this Bug doesn't seam that expensive.

I'm not the one to judge other peoples' sense, but assuming that you are right, than those money went from people with less sense to people with more sense, which is the way it should be

I'd say the '67 Sunroof was well bought.
There's NO WAY you could buy and restore that car to that level for that amount of money; unless, of course, you had all the time in the world.

The 67 was probably the best deal out of all the VW`s but I know that 60`s Bugs (No matter how nice) almost never sell for how much the builder puts into them.

Firstly the Black 67, sounds like a fair price.
The 63 samba..... WOW, however;
So are we saying that a classic VW is not worth almost $250k, i would beg to differ, if you try to restore a 23 window correctly there's not much change out of $50-60k and lets be honest the VW's have had a low price tag for many years as other classic car people tend to look down there nose at these underdogs...... but as the buying public changes, I'm sure we will see some of our cars increase and sell way beyond our dreams, but the reality is only very few will secure a buyer at this sort of price level.
The buying public...... to explain my view, over the last 20 years the buying public have been buying cars they remember for their youth i.e. 40-60s cars, the buying public now will be looking at 60-80's cars as this is what they will remember, i think that the older stuff will drop in value as less people will want these and prefer something from there youth......
Take a guy of 45 years old, 27 years ago he was a kid with no money and all way wanted a brand new xxxxx, and at 18 couldn't afford it, hes now grown up has a job and some spare cash and can afford his dream..... or the guy has been really successful and collects cars from his era..... Look at Jay Leno, fantastic car collection but who will ever buy half of these cars, only a handfull of people i would guess.
Look at my Gasser's, who would buy them "for a fair price"...... very few i would imagine, however i could see one selling at a B&J auction for silly money and ending up in non VW collection as its different, would love to see one of these up against a Rodders Journal featured Gasser at auction, would be very interesting.... and hopefully surprising

I agree with this statement - but when it comes to the price, there are also stupid guys.
One dumb guy buys something at a rediculous amount of money and sets the bar - people find out how much he paid and want more because they think theirs is more desirable.
In the end, those people are just outbidding themselves, not to mention making everyone else in the scene pay too much for cars.
Unfortunetly the market determines the price, not the builder. Such is life!

x2,000,000...!!! Thanks for puttting my thoughts into a much more tasteful and tactfully phrased set of verbage than I would have, lol. The last sentence is the most true... I can't even imagine having so much money that I could just drop 200K on a damn bus. Insanity.
