Probably one of the best-known 356s in the UK (for all kinds of reasons!), Delwyn Mallett's 'Streamliner' 356 coupe was stolen last night from his house in Farnham. It is chassis number11176 – a Reutter-bodied 1952 coupe modified with full Le Mans-style fender skirts all round, louvred rear quarter window inserts, through the bonnet fuel filler, etc. The Police haven't even come round to see him – they say there's nothing they can do but hope it gets picked up the the ANPR cameras (what a f+++++g joke). It's probably on a boat, or on a remote farm, but it will resurface sometime, surely? It disappeared sometime between 9.00pm Monday night and 8.00am Tuesday morning (today). PLEASE tell everyone and keep your eyes and ears open. Del's owned this car for ever... His number is 01252 726731 - mine is 01208 871490      |

Neither – one man's dream of building a streamlined 356. 'Doctored up' isn't a phrase I'd use for the car. I spent a long time helping Delwyn get this on the road after he'd already owned it for 30+ years. Now, after 40 years, to know it's gone, and probably either halfway across Europe or chopped up by now breaks my heart. |

It would be interesting to know what kind of an "enthusiast" would buy any parts off car like that.. If someone is deep into Pre-A restoration and suddenly now someone would offer stuff like rust-free used body panels either in that colour or bare metal or having a recent respray, should the alarm bells ring? And how could he justify the purchase to himself thinking about complete car cutted up  Luckily we're into cheap cars. |

I'm guessing if it is ever seen in public again it will be sans the streamliner panels and possibly a different color.
Most likely as a "stock" '52.
maybe if we knew the VIN #, we could check if we see a 52 ?

This whole incident seems really strange to me... If I can make a recommendation is that the owner should have a GPS monitor located somewhere in his car so that he will know the whereabouts of his car(s). I have them in all my cars and it works great! You can have it monitored right to your phone and will alert you if anyone even try's to open the door. Money well spent!

Not sure if you have a GSM tracking service in the USA? You send a sms to a tracking service and in the sms you dial the phone number to the person you would like to track. You get a sms back with the position of the person. With this service you can get a free twin sim card and install a old mobile phone in your car. The service only cost the price you pay for the sms. GSM tracking is not as accurate as GPS but it works well enough to find your car, your kids..... your wife. GPS tracking devices are easily available and very small units but still quite expensive which they shouldnt be since the service is free. It`s commonly used by freight companies to track the positions of the trailers and if you buy a new Volvo today it is more or less a part of the standard package, Volvo on call. Sheep farmers use them to track their sheeps etc etc. Best rgs BB |

Sorry Steve, but what do you mean by "This whole incident seems really strange to me..." ?? It's very easy for others on the outside to sit and say 'Oh, I would have done this...'. All that matters is that the thief or thieves either panicked when they saw the amount of interest generated on the Internet, or they were checking to see if the car was fitted with one of your tracking devices. Nobody was hurt (fortunately we don't have to carry guns to protect ourselves in most of the UK – well, except London, Birmingham, Manchester... Hmmm, well, maybe we do) and the car has been retrieved undamaged. That should be cause for celebration, yes? |
