I remember waaay back in the days of the original Cal Look Forum the term Sweep The Floor motor, possibly a Mark Herbert term, but I think Jim Ratto had a hand in it somewhere too!
Anyway, I was at my parents house today, sorting out some boxes in the garage and I came across a load of parts. I knew I'd got a load of bits but I wasn't exactly sure what, but seems like I've got pretty much everything to build a motor!
Here's what I've found:
Bugpack 82mm crank, VW journal out of my old 2180 race motor. Journals reground on mains and big ends.
Lightened flywheel - how light I'm not sure, but it went with the crank!
Kennedy Stage 2 clutch and various discs.
Berg Chromoly gland nut
Mahle 94B pistons and barrels, quite a few of them!
Bugpack rebuilt and clearanced VW rods, brand new still boxed
Engle 130 cam with aluminium gear (didn't even know I'd got this!) Pretty sure there's a Bugpack 4062 or 4063 around somewhere too.
Lifters are new but no idea what brand - in an orange box?
Berg Chromoly pushrods and I think a set of Empi ones too.
Various rockers, 1.25, and two more sets that I think are 1.4 and 1.5's, all on bolt up shafts.
041 heads with 40x35.5mm valves and dual springs, cut for 90.5/92mm pistons, compression I can't remember but fairly high I think - maybe 12:1?
1 5/8" merged headers in stainless and coated mild steel versions, dual QPs and a turbo muffler.
40IDFs, 48 IDAs, another pair of 48's but can't remember if they're IDFs or DRLAs.
Wide mouth pushrod tubes.
German 009 with Pertronix
Type 4 oil cooler
I've got a 1600 short block in the back of my garage which could donate the case if it checks out ok, along with distributor drive, cam gear, oil slinger etc. I pinched the heads and P&Cs off it years ago for another motor and can't remember why I took this one out.
It looks like I've got the bits to put together a quite entertaining street 2276. The car it'll probably end up in is a basically stock weight late '60's bug with a later 1300 gearbox (4.375 R&P). I know I'll need to have the case machined for the bigger barrels, and the heads will also need opening up for the 94's. A line bore is also probably a good idea, as is full flow oiling. I think I've got a deep sump somewhere, if not I'll have to get another one.
So, I'm after a bit of advice, mainly about the heads. Looking at Rick M's open chamber head thread, once my heads have been opened out to 94mm, could I take some material out of the combustion chamber to drop the compression a bit? If so, what to? 9:1?
Which rockers should I use, and with which cam?
Who's oil pump should I use, and what size? Which cover?
Anything else I've forgotten?
