4.5 sprints offset?

hey guys,
i m re rimming my sprintstars because they were rusted too badly, i will change them into 4.5s,
but what is the correct offset for these wheels?
i allready split the rims , but i will bring them to specialists to weld them...

hey john,
are you sure about the half inch?
because when i just lay the hearts in the rim, i allready have about an inch,
i would say 1.5 inch or two when the hearts are pressed in the rims....
maybe somebody can measure it?
i will go to the rim shop tomorrow to have them welded...

are we talking 4 or 5 lug sprints? if it's for a 4 lug wheel I can measure one this afternoon

Remember that 1/2" offset doesn't mean that you have the outer rim just 1/2 outwards from where the drum mounts.. If you have the mounting flange centered in the rim you have zero offset. If you move the center 1/4" further into the rim you have 1/2" offset to the front.

with centered in the rim you mean in the middle ?
i thought zero offset is like the ercos, where the face to bolt em down is aligned with the outer part of the rim...
so the required offset measured from the outside should be 4.5 / 2 = 2.25   -> 2.25 - 0.5 = 1.75 inch measured from the outer side?

The 4.5, 5.5 , 8 and 13's are 1/2 inch offset..

I stand corrected on the 8,s and 13,s the offset is more sever, but those wheels were more of a custom order and the offset taylored for your needs....But the 4.5 , and 5.5's were indeed 1/2 inch offset.

P.S. There were also the 10 inch version, but you could order the offset on that too.......

I just checked my EMPI catalogues and they say 1/2 ofset to widen the cars track. I do remember having one of my sets reringed years ago and told them those dimensions. They came back just like original, so however it's measured, it must be true..

maybe if somebody can measure the distance from the outer rim to the lug holes?

Okay, here it goes:     The 4.5 wheel from the flat of the lug hole to the edge of the rim measures 2 inches.... The 5.5 wheel measures from the flat of the lug hole to the edge of the rim 2 1/2 inches.... If you double each measurement you'll see that you have an extra half inch to the inside. I hope this helps you visualize what's going on with each wheel. Holler if you need more info.. John

i measured this before, and when i have this offset the top of the cone of the center is at the same height as the outer rim..
is this possible, or should the cone stick out a bit out of the rim?

i was just reading in Stephans bible and saw your car
are you running 4.5 s up front?
i think i allready know the answer; your wheels look like the cone isnt sticking out of the rim also ...
my wheels are allready at the shop, but the guy would only weld them in two weeks or so, so i can still give him thje correct measurements

Hi Peter, the fronts are indeed 4.5's and 5.5's in back. I just measured both wheels in relation to the center cap.. Now this is assuming you have the original caps, if you don't , I will meaure from the base of where the cap sits ,if you need that.. So the 4.5 with the cap in place, the cap sticks out beyond the edge of the rim 1/8 of an inch. The 5.5, the cap sits inward from the edge of the rim 1/8 of an inch.Let me know if you need any more info for the wheel shop.... John

Those are a little different looking, I wonder if it's the way they did their black paint thats throwing us... The EMPI catalogues all show the narrowest at 4.5, but they also could've been reringed at some point over the last 40 years....

measured the 5.5 rim today with cap installed ( i think they are the og ones) , and i got about 2 mm from top of the cap to outer rim,
then measured without the cap and this was 1.25 inch....

I also get 1 1/4 inch without the cap. I do know my caps are original , but they could have changed slightly during the years of production.John

I just measured the 4.5's with no cap and get 1/4 of an inch to the outside lip. John

That's Rich's car. They're 4.5's, they may look different due to the massively narrowed beam. He had some moody BRM's on it and had the beam narrowed to suit

Rich's 66 above has 4" Sprints (re-rimmed I believe) and a 3.5" narrowed beam.
