Fabien,
I don't know if this is an old DKK photo or what, but that is my old Red '67 standard in the background!

This photo was taken of all of the VW clubs in early 1981 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, CA for VW Trends magazine. It ended up being the cover shot for the May,  '81 VW Club issue. I still have a framed copy that the publishing company gave me. Been hanging on my wall ever since. That red '67 Standard, at the time, was Jeffrey Hicken's car. He was in D.K.K. long before I was. Did he buy the car from you? Or the other way around?

No, we traded actually. He had wrecked his '67 Cal look on the way back from San Diego one night. He bent the beam back on the right front side and broke an EMPI 5-spoke too. He had towed it to Rollings and the adjuster wrote it off. It was a total loss so we traded straight across. He got the Standard turn-key and I had a project.
I sold all the custom stuff off Jeff's old car like the three 5-spokes, 42DCNF's, velour interior etc and turned it in to a quasi Class 11 off road Bug. I never straightened the frame head, I just ran an old 10mm headbolt thru the hole nutted both sides and added stiffeners on the bottom tube! That's the car I had sooooo much fun in going to Azusa Canyon with Vaughn Rollings and his Burro.
The standard was a 1200A from Holland, it was pretty rusty down low, but it was original and 99% complete. I sure wish I had it back now!!!

Cool, Bruce... I didn't realize that you were the person that Jeffrey traded with.

Fabian, if my memory serves correctly, that two-tone Ghia belonged to Dustin's (now in D.K.P.) cousin. I THINK. Dustin, feel free to chime and help us out.

Thanks Mark, Yes, that was my brother in laws car and that was a picture I posted a while back, with my 68 in the background. His name is Mike Cangi, a member of Der Volks Wahl in the early eighty's. I just got some old pictures from my father in law recently along with a full copy of that magazine with the cover shot. The car was painted by Gene VanWilgen in the color scheme of the "Super Shops" cars that they had recently done some kind of contest giveaway. The interior was finsihed but it never got a proper engine placed, It ran a very basic 1641. That picture was shot after returning home from a Bug-In event. We had slammed in a big motor and close ratio trans from a friends sand rail the night before the event but couldn't sort out a shifter problem once we got there(can't remember why), so he ran it with the owner of the motor and trans sitting in the back with a pair of vise grips on the shift rod and actually made a pass like that! He blew the 2nd gear shift but still ran a mid 13 time! Those were the days! I'll try to get those other pictures scanned one of these days and post for those that are interested.

Wow... I was really hoping that nobody would ever find this one  Roll Eyes  Nothing gets by you Fabs!
Hated the "Banana Split" title, hated the photo of me, written up with a hand fulll of misinformation.  I liked RK's article in Hot VW's so much better!
Actually Fabs, the photos taken during this photo shoot were used in the French Magazine article that you and Nico told me about.
Thanks for the giggles Fabs  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy
God knows, I sure needed the laugh today  Grin
No questions here... I'm such a DEEK!
