Day moulding fenders, no paint?
«
on:
February 02, 2015, 08:32:53 am »
Just bought some unused DM fenders.
The color is almost a match to my 67, so I was thinking of running them bare.
Or do I have to paint them, no matter what?
Any thoughts?

They might go rusty if you do not paint them
I think they would be fine, before mine got painted the finish was really smooth, its a gel coat just like a beach buggy?

I've been told gel coat isn't water proof?
That means I need paint on both sides of the fender.. Or?

Google osmosis if you are in doubt.
Even though your fenders are fiberglass and you have a wood steering wheel you are not on a boat so it is perhaps not so critical.

Hey! Remember that I changed the wheel for a gold one from Trond!

How about asking Day Moulding?
For what it's worth I think there will be no problem running them in the gelcoat.

I have never painted the underneath of them, I think they are more beige than your 67 so will need something to make them match, and as Keith who made them retired now we cant ask him if they have to be painted, BUT they are gelcoat, and plenty of kit cars come in coloured gelcoat and are never painted, Keith used to even offer them in VW colours gelcoated ready to fit so no I dont think you would need to
cheers Richie

In really bright white light you see the difference in colour, but I'm normal "yellow" light it's hard to see any difference.
I might push it out in the sunshine this weekend to see.
I'll report back 👍

gel coat is porous so will absorb containments like fuel/oil etc. this will make painting in the future a pain.
