Now I been told they're supposed to be tight as they use the studs to locate the wheels, as the washers are flat and the bolts don't centralise,

Ten years ago, Mark Herbert and I spent the day in Riverside at ERCO drilling bolt patterns for Eric. The drill fixtures and drill bits were almost exactly the same dia as the intended wheel studs.
ERCO Trivia: He can offer Wide 5 in both 12 and 14mm. He can only drill Porsche 5 in 14mm.
