Belgium 69'er

Hello everybody,
after posting some pics in the late model topic and the kind replys, I decided to make a topic about my 69'er.

First some history because we al love a good story.
It al started 15years ago, was 14 years old and driving my bike from school when I spotted a grey beetle in the parking lot of a garage.
It was a first owner car and has always been driven in a area of 20km around my town, the car had 96.000 original kilometers.
Bought the car and I was hooked  !

It looked like this my first time I did LeBugShow in 2004


Then I repainted the car and lowered it.



The car was far from perfect back them, so after a some time I decided to make the way I wanted it.
The car went body off and then I bought a house, so the project was put a side for a couple of years.
But now after al of these years it's almost ready to be driven again.
now it looks like this. Not your typical cal-looker 








The car is far from finished now, but I'm hoping to get it on the road with in the next month.
I will try to update this topic a good as possible.

I'm from Izegem, West-Vlaanderen

The color isn't Savanabeige, but Saharabeige l272.
The color looks better in picture than in real life, I painted the car in my garage without paintboot. Next winter the car will be dismanteld again and be painted proffesionally.

seats are modified 914, mounted on a mix of original mount and Seat Marbella/Fiat panda seats (will show them if i find the pictures)
gauges are modified 944, new chrome rings and glasses. And the holder for them is being laserd.
small gauges under the dash are in a home made bracket.

Don't now, didn't drive a meter with it 
but the cooler was in a friends car before who drove it on the track and it was working good back then. He had to mount a thermostat because the oil didn't get hot enough.
pump is a modified type 4, with 30mm gears. in the frame there are fixed hoses from 15mm, and the flexibel hoses are an10.

Beam is the stock beam with reinforcement, remmele suspension (front and rear), R&P from a polo, Porsche Boxters brakes and the brake line are al steel brainded ones.

Hello Broen, looks nice

about the paintjob, we do a lot of paintdetailing at work, it is sometimes unbelievable what result we can achieve even on very bad paintjobs. I assume we have seen worse than the one you did, so when you do you first test drive, you have a destination

I now Davy, it would be possible to polish the paint flat. But the body it self isn't flat, didn't bondo anything.
And there is still a big dent in the roof from a wooden beam of 6 meter who have dropped on it

Ok, here is the chassis post.

It al started with a pretty solid chassis, no major rust that was not repairable.

But the passenger side had to much rust pitting to have a nice finish, so it was cut out.
This made further work much easier, because now i was time to open the tunnel.

Two oil and fuel lines where mounted in the tunnel,clutch line and also changed the shifter position.

Than this got mounted. So converted the car to IRS with the use of steel 944 arms and brakes.

A little testfit to see if everything worked.

Then the chassis whent back to the place for metallization the frame tunnel and sandblasting the rest of the chassis.
Welded tunnel and new floorpan in.
Then back to metallization for the chassis itself. And in to the paint boot. Here the holes for the cage are already been made (but thats for the body update).

And this was the result.


So now it was time to start mounting everything, and believe me there was a lot to put in it  .

Can you give more details about the front beam reinforcements brackets? Are they home made?

I like the idea of the skid plate!

the beam reinforcements came from a german guy. he sells them on bugnet and saw him on meeting with it to, but I don't remember his name.
the skidplate is for keeping the frame nice but also for putting the car on the trailer. The 2 dots on the url are enlarged and have m10 threath now, so i can put in a eyebolt and attach a knee strap to it.

A couple of months went by, and a lot happened in that time.
But now i can say I have driven the car the past couple of days.
It's a blast, engine makes good power.
Steering is not to compare with a stock bug, it's direct and stable at high speed.
Just need to make some adjustment on the front shocks, it's to bouncy now. The shocks have a small extra spring in it, will try the difference with that removed.

So last weekend we went to a event in France to test the car.

Together with kever65 on here.


Had a great time over there, learnt a lot, like racing with slicks on a wet track isn't a good idea  .


But after driving the car there where gearbox problem.
Can't shift fast, espacially to second. It makes a lot of noise and loses a lot of oil.
It's the only part that isn't new or rebuild on the car, so last night this happened.


only drove 200km with it and this was already hanging on the oil bolt

So today the box goes away for a rebuild.
hope to get it back before DDD.

So gearbox is away for  rebuild, hopefully next week the now what is wrong with it.

@Henk:
At Clastres they have a big site, there is a straight line of 1 mile. A irth track for bikes, a little circuit and a drift circuit.
It's like 45 minutes further than Lille, so it's not that far in France.

The engine is a 2.5 type4
specs are:
71x105
48 idf
009
heads are welded and 44x38 manley valves, gb double springs, jpm retainers
BAS exhaust (love the noise  )
webcam 86c
custom flywheel to use a porsche 915 flywheel and release bearing
...

Well, looks I have been porly on updates.

didn't make it to DDD.
however was able to participate to King of the hill.
the weekend started badly with a 17second pass(clutch problems), but on sunday we where able to get a time of 14.4 seconds(only 5.500rpm in 3th gear).

Had a super weekend!

so I was happy with the performance of the car.
but now winter is upon us, and because i always wainted the car to become a show quality vehicle.
I have made registration for the VoksWorldShow, and they have accepted me.

So now the car is back dismounted and we are hoping it will be show ready by then.
This is how the body looks now, so lot's of work has to been done.
