I sourced a semi-complete CSP kit yesterday, from a friend up north, all new stuff. Just missing one key part.... one pad.

Since the calipers are from vauxhall, you can also use vauxhall (opel) astra (MK1 MK2)/ kadett/nova/cavalier pads.

Opels aren't common over here. I ran the equivalent manufacturer's numbers to the GM # and that NK number, just to see if we stocked anything in Ate, no such luck. No big deal, I'll order them from CIP1.

Luckily Beetles are lightweight, you probably won't wear a set of pads out in ten years. My CB pads have tons of life left after 12+ years.

Probably teaching granny to suck eggs here, apologies if I am, but check you're not running a residual pressure valve from the original drum brake master cylinder.

Hi Jim,

Which front tyre size do you have on the front and how are the tyres working with the CSP brakes? One of my 145's is worn with the other on the way out, I'm wondering if the CSP brakes might benefit from slightly more rubber. I know changing from 145 isn't necessarily considered the thing to do but a few folk are running 155 and I thought it might be worth thinking about as new tyres are on this year's list.

No need to panic stop. Find some lonely road with a less than sticky surface and try to lock em up. You shouldn't feel the rear end go sideways.

175/55, must admit that's wider than I was thinking about. Do you need biceps like the hulk to make a slow speed turn?

Are you using cheap brazilian floor pans ?

I have stock 1500 discs on my 1970 late bug, with average brake pads and stainless steel lines.
Never had that impression under hard braking.
Ok, besides that, I have CSP beam stiffners and cabrio reinforcement rails under heater channels.

In the future, I plan to install mechanical servo, that was discused over here few years ago. That will bi last step to improve brakes to feel more progressive under hard braking (I had a chance to drive a bug equipped with mech. servo - that feels good).

The beam stiffeners are a good factory idea. I believe VW put them on as original equipment when they thought the country where the car was going had rough roads. Check if the beam is on tight. Those four bolts holding it to the frame head do not have a high torque spec, but do need to be snug.
Anything loose in the front suspension will make hard braking scary.

Since we are talking about white knuckle rides, do any of you take people out in your car to scare them? I have the perfect loop I can do from our parking spot at work. Onto the main strip, hang a right onto the freeway to merge, and instead take the exit back toward the work parking lot. I can take off in first, and grab second bringing up the revs and just about hit third before slamming on the brakes as the exit heads back with a drifting right hander. The last guy I took out has had a stroke at work a few years ago and lost his license then. Again last year he hit the floor from his desk and lost his license again, but rode his Ducati home anyway! Last week he fainted at work again. sheesh. The ride in my car scared him though, he was white!
