Does anyone know if this mainshaft exists. I'm sure I recall it being made at some point (maybe FTC?). Anyway I'm after that or somewhere near. There's a Weddle 4.25/2.54 but the second gear is too tall for me.

FTC do (or did) a 4.11/2.47 mainshaft, but I've not heard of a 4.38.

My out of date ERCO catalog (2003) shows that combo was available.
The closest Weddle has on their site is 4.25/2.54

I had an ALBINS 002 (Weddle) one, years ago, built for a customer buggy
that was used for 'crawling' and beach work,
(used it with a 5.43 Crown wheel and pinion),
but it was quite weak in tooth size,
so wouldn't recommend it for any sticky pavement!
It was 4.375 (35/8 tooth count) ( first gear and 2.6154 (34/13 tooth) second gear.
So yes, they WERE available.

Thanks - so the teeth are not great then. Might not be the best for big launches by the sounds of it!
