If i was to build a replica gasser or just transform my bug into a gasser , what are the main things to be done that make it quite obvious that its not a cal looker.

To start with , give it a metal flake paintjob , give it a cool name which you write with big letters onto the side of the car . Get an idea , a concept and start from there .
V8 gasser usually standing up high in the front , not the bugs.
I was facing the same problem when i was designing the mini bug for my youngest , i came up with this

From the newer build gassers , Muppet Racer and the Otto Bros are the best known in Europe i guess .

Bonnet & wings, maybe side scoops and scooped decklid, then period paint job & sign writing

Thanks guys. Can't do the scooped lid, turbo's in the way, because or this the look might not work. If I can I'll get a pic up and see if a plan can be worked out. The old gassers look like patina bugs with dull/satin paint, lifted at the front,  looks like 12 inch floor to front vallence on some of them. no bumpers, the wings have that lightweight fibre glass look to them with different curves to em. No running board's.
Lil pincher does have a good look for a little n....The name and graffix style has to be right too I think

I actually had in mind to give it a turbo back , was even half way finished , but then i decided for myself it would not fit the rest of the oldschool look

Yeah your right the aluminum rear is too modern. Wider front wings with a flare are a winner I think. Same on the rear, but the rear wings have to have  a different higher curve at the back showing more tyre

Gasser photos page 1 to 49.Who's is best. Bit of a poll if you like.
The white underdog on page 1 has it for me. I have the same wheels, so there's a start

Gassers dont actually need metal flake paint jobs....

The only real Gasser I've had which has a metal flake, was Stutt Bee, all others were normal paint from memory.....

Most on the net are either satin or original dull paint with a good catchy name . The name is important i think and only gets better with age and how well known it is. That  part of a gasser cant be replicated.

St Moritz had some „special paint“ too , it was changing from white to slight gold , no you are right it does not has to be metal flake , but most of the newly build Gassers have it . Grasshopper, Dangerine , Smoker, Double Trouble , Muppet Racer ...
This was a gasser look

But is it still today ?
