Those were the days of becoming colour blind I like the pics-reminds me of the beginning of my own "VW career" starting back in 1988. Some of the cars you posted were also known pretty known over here in Germany and an inspiration for all the "Newbies" that didn´t want to go for a "Boomplastic" car with a rear wing.

That's right JHU, it hales from my home town. Still in the hands of the builder. Sitting in a dry garage looking just as good as it does on this picture. Very nice car, rolling on OG Centerlines and has a type 4 motor. It actually won an award at Santa Pod that day He found the car sitting under a three in the forrests of Trysil. It is a factory rag top car..so you can imagine the rust damage it had

I remember a bunch of these cars! Man, colors were bright... Drooled over Chris Jory's blue Oval (Europe's Most Beautiful VW) at Bug Jam #1 in '87. Thanks for the great pics!

Love this yellow car on alloys, it is like a blend of clean, simple, and custom. These pics remind me of the days when the excitement to building a VW was putting your own ideas into it. I think there is too much fear of deviating far from stock with our current trends.

I was a lot younger back in '87 when I did this car. Still, I've got to admit, I had a lot of fun with the car.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned about that car (Karen Monk's) was that it was stored in a garage that hit by a flash flood – the car was under water up to the level of the speedometer. Paint tins, minus their lids, bobbed around in the water, leaving an interesting tide mark... I always wondered what the double-skinned sections of that car are like on the inside…
