So after some investigation work this is the most upto date history of the car, happy to amend and update if any extra or new information comes forward;
Manufactured in 1962 and shipped to Chicago.
1962 to 1967 Unknown
1967 to 1970 Greg Aronson, was Brown when he purchased it in summer 67, Painted White in 1968 by Beckers, sold to Jim in 1970
1970 to 1977 Jim Holmes, featured in HVW 1975, car crashed in 76, sold to Keith 8th Sep 77
1977 to 1981 Keith Bruno, Located in Brea CA
1981 to 1984 Bill Rodgers (Bilboa)
1984 to 1984 Christi Duda, Crashed car twice we think, repaired by Keith Goss at least once
1984 to 2017 Jim Morris, replaced Sunroof and roof lining on May 84 (1995 transferred in to a trust)
May 2017- Russell Ritchie

Russell are you able to divulge how Jim Morris aquired it? How you found it? and where it was located (so we can all realize how close it was lol)

Car Stored for 33 years in Apply Valley, Hesperia, CA
Jim said it was local and he recognised it when it was damaged and he made an offer, once he had it the sunroof cover was replaced as it was in very poor condition, the car came with the original T bars, Indicators, Chrome ashtray, glovebox lid and handbrake lever along with some other tell tale signs, the DKP sticker on the rear window was still there and slightly worn, but I've left it and you could see where the DKP stickers had been on the vent windows.
Well, it came up for sale on the samba, however I had heard it had been offered back to Greg and he said no, I contacted the seller Jim and we had a few phone calls, in the back ground there were 2 others interested in it one was too late the other didn't have the cash at had I understand. However, and more importantly I had told Jim to ensure that it didn't go to a dealer who would resell for more money.... Jim spoke to a few people and was told by a couple (they know who they are "Thank You") that I was the right guy to get it, this did help no end to ensure that it was sold to the right type of person who would appreciate and bring back to life.
With a deal eventually done (May 17) the car was collected for me by a very trustworthy VW Guy Steve "Scooby" Wiedner and taken to a secure location before shipping to UK. Thanks again steve.
Arriving with me in 2017 and now undergoing recommissioning back to its former glory where possible.

I wonder if the last Jim knew or read about all the stories of where the car was or ended up, I bet if he did he had a good laugh at some of them.
Very cool to track its history! What an amazing car, dkp1 cars are hard enough to find let alone this one!

Brilliant Russell! Makes the wait for pictures worth it!

I just realized that I have a picture I took at the Bug In in 1974 when he was in the car show with me and Shaky Jake was the judge . I will have to dig it out and post it. Thank You Russell for bringing back the famous Cal Look car back to life !!!
Thanks

Brilliant, it looks amazing. I like that its not been over restored - the glovebox lid is clearly original. Nice touch with Jim still wearing the same shirt too!
Now, any more pictures?

Well while you're chasing the leads, can we have a mini build thread for all the ones since Tar Babe please? I love a good set of in progress pictures!
