Now that the pan is all done, Zach and I started doing some of the metal work. Drilled out the spot welds to make the rear apron removable. Also pulled a couple pounds of un-needed weight. Decided that I'm not going to run a heater in the car (luckily I live in Arizona where it was almost 70 degrees fahrenheit yesterday) so we removed all traces of the stock heater today. Didn't have any gas for the welder so we were not able to weld up any of the holes yet. Probably get to that on Monday when the store is open. Going to work on it more tomorrow. I'll update on the progress.

Shortly after that post yesterday we got bored again so we had another go at it  Asshull removed all of the factory seal channels around the hood and decklid openings in preparation for Mexican Beetle seals that mount directly to the hood and decklid for a cleaner look. He also cut out the bottom of the rusty A pillars to fit up the replacement pieces from Hooky's Panel shop. I started on fabbing up a convertible decklid, in the words of the great Jeremy Clarkson, "How hard can it be?"  I've still got a touch of trimming to do, but so far I am very pleased. 'Course I haven't welded it up yet and that's usually where I get impatient and fuck it all up  |

That work on the decklid is so nice, really inspiring. I wonder how long I can wait before getting out the grinder. And by the way, the other work is equally inspiring, but I already cut the heating channels in my car  And it is minus 10 degrees celcius tonight |

Thanks for the kind words It really isn't that hard, pretty straight forward actually. Just took my time, and so far so good. I'm going to start welding it up tonight as we finally got some gas for the MIG... |

I plug welded the brace back in first to restore the proper shape of the lid, then I trimmed the vents to the exact shape of the opening. Now I need a couple Vise-Grips with deep throats so I can weld the vents up the rest of the way...

Bring in those rusty vents to the shop so we can bead blast em, before you weld it in. That way we won't have to cut the decklid in half to fit it in the cabinet  |

Are you going to remove the brace again to finish off the welds on the inside? when I did mine I just tacted a bar from one side to the other then installed the brace after it was welded and ground down then removed the bar |

A couple spots got a little squirrelly from the heat, but not bad at all. Once it's ground down I'll take a body hammer and straighten it back out. I'm very pleased thus far |

Finally finished grinding down all of the welds. Took a little patience (didn't want to heat it up too bad) but here we go. Warped a little between the welding and grinding but Zach took a body hammer to it to straighten it out. Hit it with a coat of paint just to get a feel for the look. All in all, turned out pretty well I think.

Welded up the trim holes, washer nozzle, and it seems like a million other things today. Ashtray also went the way of the Dodo. AssHull just made up some very precise panels from the sheetmetal from the donor decklid to get rid of everything not needed on the dash. Gonna go tack them in now. The dash will be very clean and all business when everything is all said and done |

Hey that's cool, thanks! Finished dash will not be so bare though. Hazard light switch will be in the center where the ashtray used to be, and a cigarette lighter (power outlet, really) will be opposite of the ignition switch. And it will be painted VW Blue! But more importantly... '68-'69 911S tach in the speedo hole...  Early 914 speedo (100mm) to the right of the tach...  And an early 914 combo gauge (also 100mm) on the left  Still looking for said gauges, so if anyone has what we need give us a shout! |

Went down and picked up a couple gauges from a junkyard here in Phoenix. They didn't have the Tach that I wanted so I'll have to keep an eye out for that still.
