Harold,  Big Jim Dunn wasn't the only one short on funds. As a poor teenager I used to sneak into OCIR in the trunk of my buddies 65 bug (minus the spare) to watch the "Firemans Quickie" and cars like his.

So poor, that during the big fueler meets we could only watch from the eucalyptus trees across the freeway from the track. So poor that I never tasted
"track food" at OCIR.

Instead we feasted on the best the times had to offer....The early funny cars, the first "back motor" dragsters and the out of control Altereds. And my favorite, standing a safe distance behind the Jet powered cars at the starting line and going home reeking of JP 4.

Watching Dean, Darrel, Paul, and Rich hide from the V8 Chevy's.....Absolutely  Priceless

I only hope that the current generation has the chance to feel the same kind of excitement that we felt....and that their moms have a good sense of humor.  Wink

Phil, we didn't grow up with a lot of money, but I did grow up very lucky, My dad had drag raced before I was born and continued many years after. I was lucky enough to experience LIONS, Old Irwindale, Ontario, OCIR, Bakersfield (orig March Meets). My kids have an appreciation for what their grandpa did and accomplished and enjoy going to Pomona a couple times a year, they both love NITRO and they both love the feeling of having your entire body feel the concussion of 16,000 horsepower go by you at 300 MPH...............and so do I! My dads last funny car. (he and Tom Ridings bought it from Mert Littlefield)

She appears to be aging well, but it also looks as though she's dressing more conservatively.
