I thought that Cammer came 2-3 years later than those 427 Thunderbolt Fairlanes, but Google prooved me wrong.

Would Dyno Don's Mercury Comet, sister model to Fairlane, do?







I am more into Dodges in the Factory Experimental classes of that vintage Wink

Those engines are wild. Due to the chain stretch, they would have to run one cam retarded and one cam advanced. They were built on the side oiler block. I think you can buy an all alum version now.

A guy here at work has a Fairlane AFX, but not the cammer motor for it, but it is setup to take one, with moved out strut towers/susp points.... he was opening my eyes really wide on these motors.... sounds like it was a real mean mother. I would love to learn more about them,

Here in Norway we actually had a real Thunderbolt with a 427 SOHC that was kept flawless but used hard on the dragstrip in the eighties. I don't think anyone really knew how extremely rare it was..
If I'm not mistaken the car was later sold back to the US. Will scan some pictures when I have time to look through my old magazines.

A bit off topic in this Fairlane thread, but a friend of mine had this '64 Galaxie until recently.
The car was built like this in 1968 and raced until 1972, not touched since.. The paintjob, diamond stitch interior, gauges and everything else was done back then..
The drivetrain consists of a 427 sideoiler with lots of HOT parts from Fords racing division (like an experimental intake), a reinforced Toploader 4-speed and 9" rear with Detroit Locker and 4,10 gears.. It really makes that heavy car behave like a rocket!
No freeway cruiser though..

That's one complicated looking engine. I'm curious as to what the large gear on the smaller (inner) timing chain is for. Normally it would be for the camshaft, but they are on the heads now. Perhaps it's to drive the distributor. On a different note, there's a guy in my neighborhood who just finished building a thunderbolt replica complete with vintage style signwriting. I don't know what engine he has in it, but it sounds mean.

Looks like it drives a jack shaft now and runs the oil pump and maybe the distributor - most likly both

Phffff. My dad's a yard full of them things. Roll Eyes Actually he's got a couple 66 and 67 Fairlane GTs and GTA convertibles with 390s and a few Galaxy 500s. Neat cars.

I remember seeing some pictures of it in Wheels/Power/V8-Magazine, there was also a '67 or '68 SOCH Mustang in Sweden that raced in Nordic Modfied Standard (~NHRA Super Stock) class in 80's.

Very funny.. Would EMPI guys have converted Inch Pincher to drag racing car without these factory looking / factory backed drag racing cars preceding it and making drag racing overall more popular? So there might be a small Cal Look relation  Wink

hey redwagon, I think that is just the stepdown gear, from crank to drive cams at 1/2 speed. The big chain gears look like they are all about if not the same diameter, but big drive gear behind looks 2 x diameter.

You should see timing gears on a Cosworth DFX V8  Shocked  can you imagine setting lash and valve timing?

I came across a Hillborn injection setup for VW's at a musclecar type swap meet a couple years ago and  I was very tempted to buy it. In the end I just decided it would look cool but probably be a pain to tune.

That engine with the hilborn injectors is modernized isnt it I thought Hilborn was always mechanical that setup has fuel rails and is EFI.

  Once at Pomona I believe it was Danny Zapeda if I remember correctly, had a dual Hilborn VW setup in the OG box it was sweet.
