following up on the old 427 SOHC Ford motors that I am now learning about...
Here's a thread dedicated to old, odd race and HP engines from the past...
How about the BRM H16 2997cc? It was basically two flat 8 engines stacked on top of one another, yes two cranks, geared together. This engine can be seen in action in brief footage in Grand Prix movie. It neve was succcessful in F1 racing due to its complexity, its weight and huge vibration issues from 2 cranks, resulting in failed drive geartrains... I think it made 425hp? 16 pistons.... 64 valves, 8 cams, 2 cranks.....

Offys....... How about Porsche 771 2.2 liter flat eight? 2.2L.... 282hp? How's that for specific output. This motor was used in 907 sports racer and in several hill-climb specials (where it was tuned to make as much as 290hp with clutched fan drive!) http://www.pelicanparts.com/vasekauction/771/med/ulthm.htm

somewhere I have a pic of an Alfa Romeo 4 cylinder DOHC motor, like your typical 2000GTV thing, except it is fed by two OIL PRESSURE DRIVEN turbos..... not exhaust gas driven. I can't come up with a pic right now.... but how wild is that?

I remember an old Hot VW's article talking about a guy mating two "type1" VW motors together "end-to-end" effectively making a 8-cylinder ! Anyone remember if he ever finished it ? Anyone know where it is today ? I would have loved to hear it run !

Another BRM motor.... this time a 1.5 liter V16 yes.... 1488cc divided amongst 16 tiny cylinders. It has been claimed that this was the first 4 stroke motor to ever exceed 10,000 rpm (1950-51)... up to that ponit the Alfetta 159 straight 8's were going 9-9500 (pretty amazing for those long stroke Alfas) bore x stroke was 49.5 x 48.6mm (!) 2 valves per cyl (31.8mm intake x 27.7mm exh), dohc per head two stage Rolls Royce roots-type blower, SU carbs, alcohol fuel, 5.7bar boost! 460hp @ 11,000rpm.... from 1488cc in 1951!

If you heard one of these running at full bore, you'd know the true meaning of pain. It is the most ear-shattering engine I've ever heard in my life. Amazing!

I have a sound clip from that engine on my computer. It makes the hair stand up on my back.

Seen at the NHRA Museum... Mickey Thompson's Challenger 1. Four 415ci supercharged engines. It went 406mph circa 1960.

Jay Leno's Collection... The Rolls Royce engine is either from a plane or a tank - I don't remember. Leno's crew built a car around it. The car is huge!

Jim, you really need to get Practical Performance Car magazine! Last month they looked at radial and rotary piston engines - Junkers JU88 and Focke Wulf FW190 being radial, Le Rhone being the latter. The month before they looked at 2 crank motors, using two pistons per cylinder, a la Rolls Roys K60 Range and Jumo 223 and 224. Oh, and one of the staff writers has put a 27-litre V12 Rolls Royce Meteor engine (the non-supercharged version of the WW2 Spitfire engine out of a tank!) into a Rover SD1...

see that catch can (though I think it is for coolant on this motor)? I think an oil breather for a VW motor, that mounted on firewall, centered in front of (towards F of car) fan housing would be very cool. The 356 Carreras had a similar breather tank, and was fed from a big breather off of top of case. Anyway, sorry to get off topic.....let's get back to weird race motors.
