Hello looka-fans.....
I thought i should start a thread about the a other old-school look here....the old european school-look
By that i am thinking of the vintage vw-racers that raced in the old days...such as this wonderfull car:
http://www.0-100.it/vw/petermax/vw-petermax_engl.htm
In the late 40's and the 50's there where many vw-specials that raced on circuits as the Avus-oval, solitude and so on.
Just have a look at the results in 1949-50 on this site:
http://www.solitude-memorial.de/idx05.htm
And i think this look is tranferable over to the beetles, there were many racers racing in the tourist-classes at the Nürburgring in the old days as a example.
I love the cal-look scene, but i also love the look and the cars that recreate the vw-racers that raced in hillclimbs, circuit racers and so on.
A look that i myself have defined as the hot-sodd :-)
That means cars that looks like they have been racing in Europe in the 50's and the 60's...racing against 356's and so on.
One perfect example is Splitmans "Thundersodder Spezialer"
As seen in this tread:
http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php?topic=40.0
I simply LOVE this car.
The look is very perfect on cars from the 50's, but would also work well on later cars.
So, do anybody have pictures or anything of other hot-sodds?

I suppose the Inch Pincher in a very early state qualifies as a "Hot Sodd". When it was raced in Nassau by Dan Gurney the car was more of a road racer then a drag car..

Thanks for the kind words Mr Soddli.
"Der Thundersodder Spezialer" is a zwitter first raced in 1964 in Norway. It raced road course dirt tracks and hillclimbs up until 1971 when it broke the crankshaft in two and left to die behind a barn. It had a 1300 ccm engine with a german dual carb set up, Isky camshaft and Gene Berg alu spacers with 14 inch bus wheels when last raced. The leather covered steering wheel, the vinyl-covered dashboard loaded with gauges and the bakelite pilot seat from a 1952Vampire jet fighter plane is all original and still untouched.
I "repaired" it over the last three years..new floor pans, new bottoms of heater channels, new front and rear clip. It was dented and rusted. The idea was to do as little as possible and preserve its battlescars and patina. I added some more "hot sodd" features myself as well, and painted it "dull" Massey Ferguson silver-grey with Porsche-look-alike scalloops.
The current, authentic 1600 ccm Sauer & Sohn engine (1969 blueprint says 124 HP), the Porsche 356B brakes, the decklid and DDS shifter is from another true hot-sodd racecar. A 1956 Oval that was Danish champion in it's class in 1970 and 71. Check the black and white photo below.
The idea and "attitude" behind european VW-based racecars is EXACTLY the same as the tru Cal Lookers.... buy it cheap, make it light and go fast. Do a "David vs Goliath" and beat the "big guns" with simple Porsche-Volkswagen-engineering. That is why I love both..

Hei Øystein,
these should be your engine specs. The price for the kit (not the whole engine) was 3295 Deutsch Mark, around 1700 Euro! A lot of money over 30 years ago!

And how about this: The Split is Graf Berghe von Trips car in a race on the legendary Nürburgring 1954. By the way: Interesting wheels and start number (was this the role model for Herbie?

no, it's an original S&S catalog. Looks not very professionel so. I have two or three of them. Should I bring them to the Volksworld Show?
Please check your Personal Messages!

Yes that is a uniqe racer buildt by Otto mathe...the one-armed racer.
The man had quite a collection of cars which he raced.
He had the lone typ60 K10 car:
http://www.derpca.com/Porscheforme/356-8-04.htm
And he also raced this gmund-coupe, who now belongs to Jerry Seinfeld:

(poor quality pict )
links for the other gmund , pict show the handle door

This is an old swedish rally bug. Definately a Hot Sodd, even if it has kind of a "nose down, ass up" stance in one of the pictures
By the way, I'm actually sitting here eating sodd as I write, quite good actually...

Don`t worry, we digg this off topic thread and besides, we would also like to know what Sodd is made off. My guess is that it is the same with Sodd as it is with Karsk - secret, but OH so good!
