Ever wonder if some of your old stuff is still running around out there somehwere. I do. I wonder if some kid is running around with my old Pauter VW 40 x 35 heads. I know they were on the Samba not long ago. Or my old 44IDFs, old 1-1/2 Four Tuned header, the 2.0 liter from my dad's single cab, even the H case out of my car I turned in as a core in 1987. I know where my old Super Flows are... (hi Popper).

My original IDAs came from Mike Hunsaker's B/MC car back in '73, then went onto my blue '67 for years. Then to my sandrail and four different engine combos... Then to my brother's '61 convertible streeter, then to Ricky in London for his black '67 street car, then to someone else in Europe who is on this forum.

I know where most of this stuff went intially.... heads went to Sheep for his 1914, 44's went to our buddy Fuss for his 1914, header went to co-worker Javier for his.... uh 1914, the 94 x 74 in my dad's Type 2 came from my '67, went with bus when he sold it to his coworker. But none of this stuff is still with those original guys. My dad's motor was one nice piece too, Denham ported 42 x37, German filled back NOS case...

The dumbest thing I ever did was throw out a Berg shifter back when I was 17 or 18... I got a new Scat Drag Fast shifter for Christmas my senior year, and I chucked the Berg shifter because it kept slipping into reverse gear...I put myself at risk of a lynch mob for admitting this, I realize, but rest assured I've tortured myself plenty.

Funny story about two weeks ago I was at dave greiner's shop for lunch{,kinda vw geek lunch thing} on saturday's. Well anyway I was setting there eating lunch and dave's brother come walking in with some parts for sale and some linkage parts caught my eye. So I look a little closer and it's the IDA linkage off my black ghia that I sold in 1993. Small world!

No idea what happened to my old parts. Sold the rear Ercos and slicks along with the Cogbox-built trans to someone else building a gasser-style car but to the best of my knowledge it was never finished and the parts were sold on again. The 13" front wheels went to Rob at East Coast Manx and are on the front of his metalflake brown Manx and the car went to someone local who broke it up. The flip front (still in my old paint!) is on a car I see every onve in a while, the rear wings, decklid and other bits could be anywhere. The Superflow heads that I bought from Cliff Watkins (Clockwork Orange/Bugcatcher car) were given to someone to see if they could be repaired and then sold on - he's still got them three years on! My IDA's came from Dave Southcombe, who was selling them on behalf of a friend who apparently had bought them from Keith Gaddene who had bought them from Keith Seume! No idea who's they were before that though.

I have been thinking about this for a while. How parts seem to stay within the Cal-look community and circle from person to person. Several of the parts I have bought for my car, most notably the IDAs and Skat Traks have been owned by several people in the community. I have parts on my car from Donny B's '66, etc The SP dual Kad manifold I sold Deidrick's brother came from Joel Mohr. I like parts that have a bit of history. It makes them interesting and gives them character.

Gary, that blew my mind when I saw your old convertible in Stephan's Cal Look book. I recognized the license plate, even after all of the years that have passed. Your car has always been my fave '67 convertible. I liked it the best when I saw it with the alloys and BRMs.

Most of my castoff parts seem to endup on other family member's bugs. My oldest younger brother Max had a nice little '66 that ended up with a nice little 1776 dellorto engine that I ran in my 67 for a while, along with a ton of other parts leftover parts. the next oldest brother Ben had a 73 Standard which became a 63/73 when he rear ended a truck. He ended up with a lot of my old stuff too. Ironically, I ended up owning both of their bugs when they lost interest. I sold Max's '6 and regrettted it because it was really straight. I still have the 63/73 and plan on building a drag car out of next year.
Last year, when I built a Thing for my fiance, I put the entire engine together out of parts leftover in the garage as well. My youngest brother, Michael, recently bought a '69 bug and so far i've given him a buch of VDO gauges, a JSC hurst knockoff shifter and an S&S four tip muffler that were all on my bug.

A couple things come to mind. Many years back I was selling at a VW Classic. Guess I figured I was going to not need them, so I had my 42DCNF-9 with Berg linkage for sale. Sat there all day...at the high price of $250 Nearing the end of the day, I finally found a buyer..It was Gene and Dee Berg buying them back! Gene mentioned he had been watching them for most of the day. Think he "ground me" down $25 bucks. A real swapmeeter..he got the deal. Don't mind ridding myself of the carbs, but I kick myself for letting go of that 1974 Berg Linkage. As for the other, I have the good fortune of being a friend of Gary "Shubee". When he was selling his red oval to Japan, I scored his 5th American 5 Spoke from him...giving me my 5th wheel. Still have'em
