Larry tell us all about your long and illustrious involvement with hot rodded VW's, vintage Porsches and old hot rods.

Your cars have always been topics for good conversation... finished off well, run good, and some neat parts bolted to them. Your Red '67 has always been one of my favorite cars. But the Viper Green 911E.... now that was a car.

how'd you get started in VW's and autcorssing your Volvo and so on? tell us some history of your '67's.

And please tell us about "billy"

nice shots of that car...

it is a true street car too. He drove that car from Oakland, CA down US Interstate 101 to my place in Simi, then followed me to Nicks down in Fullerton. After,  we went to Disneyland for a few hr. Then he drove it home to Oakland.
Very cool

Larry you owe me dinner for all the love you're getting. Fatapples?

Larry's got a big heart.

One of my favorite memories with Larry is coming back from Sacramento Bug A Rama in his minivan, towing either the red 67 or the black one. We stopped for gas near Highway 50 at a big station. While the tank filled, Larry got engrossed with a lady breastfeeding her baby in the car next to us, in the mean time his van locked itself and we were locked out. He was fit to be tied.

All right you jokers, I give you a little insight. Yes I was distracted and yes I "accidentally" had a full view of the large food storage devices and the tow vehicle got locked while blocking a row of gas pumps. Yes the station was a little upset with me until AAA got there a half hour later. Yes all my friends laughed at me the whole time and some still give me a hard time to this day..JIM!! No the lovely young lady did not call the cops she just smiled. Grin

I just remember you with your jaw on the floor, and you had that hat on with the desert flaps that cover your neck....  and you screaming at the top of your lungs in the middle of the gas station "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THOSE....."

will you show a picture of "billy?"

Back to cars. My brother got me into Hot VWs in 1971 he bought a white 67 with 21K miles off the Ford used car lot. The original owner traded it in on a new Pinto. Roll Eyes All his money went to hot rod parts. Within a year he and I added headers, Zenith carb and then 87s with dual port heads. I was hooked. I started drag racing and autocrossing a dune buggy(12.00 w/1776). I had quite a few race wins with it in the 80s. I did some SCCA road racing with a bug and was GT5 SF regional champ in 1990 with it. I also hooked up with some American Hot Rodders and built a 27 ford roadster Bonneville racer that is still the world record holder BF/MR. The Black 67 was built just for Der Renn Kafer Cup. I was racing my red 67 cal bug which was a really great car but the competition in DRKC was very intense. Rather than redoing at really nice car I bought Jimmy Roth's nice original black paint car and redid that. I got a few seconds and one fastest time in DRKC but I just couldn't keep up. I returned the red 67 to stock and the black 67 is now detuned with a K8 and 9.5:1, which makes it a lot more fun to drive on the street.  Enjoy this photo of some of the cars I raced through the years.

I think this is Larry's car at Kelley Park 08. I have some photos of the black car, but I need a scanner.

here is a repost of a picture from about 10-12 years ago. Larry's red car can be seen on the right... 90.5 x 76, IDFs, heads by his brother, Paul, 120 cam. On the left is Wenzel SODA's car, 88 x 74, Heads Up Perf heads, 86B cam, IDAs

I can remember one of the first times I met Big Larry, he came into BH to hang with his old buddy Steve C., who worked with us @ Buggy House. Steve said "you might like this guy coming in the door right now and you should go look at his car." So Larry and I met and obviously had stuff in common. I remember he had his two little girls with him, they were like knee-high then, now they're driving! Anyway, I remember McKenz pulling out onto Mission from out lot, with his little girls in his red '67 and launching the car past the shop... it made my day.

Somewhere I have some old pics of Larry and I hagning out @ Solvang '96 at the campground. I'll see if I can dig for them.
