while I've waiting for the new California look book to arrive  I've found myself reading the first california look book (sad huh  Huh ) I got to thinking we see a lot of questions asked on this site about what happen to this car and were is that car, but so far no one has asked about Ron's oval  Huh
So come on who knows what happened to it did it become an all out racer or did it get sold on and lost or has Ron still got it sat in a lock up gathering dust???

I contacted Ron for you.... Rick Rockman is the guy who bought Ron's car (minus the BRM's).  Rick had it for awhile before selling it to someone else... nobody knows where it is today.  I can tell you that the two of us raced many times on the street back in the day.  One of the most memorable was a well attended street race behind the Sunkist Orange Processing plant in Anaheim.  There were a number of us at it that night with lots of people standing around on both sides of the street.  Ron and I had just been flagged off when the place lit up like a football stadium.  It was the Anaheim PD helicopter and they caught us all red-handed.  The ones that high-tailed it got citations... the rest of us that stayed got a severe tongue lashing.  Ron's car ALWAYS ran good... that Joe Hunt mag was good mojo.  Those were the days.... Cool

Cheers Sarge  Cool

So we can mark that one down as lost then  Cry seems such a shame that so many great cars have gone missing over the years Huh but I suppose the guys who built them have their memories of the good time with those cars and thats what is important in the end

Rick bought Ron's car with the idea of building a A/MC car, and even purchased a full set of DDS wheels for it. When he decided not to build the car, my brother bought the DDS wheels from him. No telling where the black Oval went to...

man, what's gotten in to you Sarge?

I often wondered what became of Ron's oval too... good post! I see his car as kind of the predecessor to Mason's black car.

Cool story!! That happened to me also. Got caught street racing a short time ago and I stayed put. Cop just yelled at me and told me to slow the F down. Super lucky!! Shocked Joe Hunt mag, huh. How about some engine specs. Are there any unseen pics of this car in the new book?

At one point, I know that car had the ubiquitous 1700 in it. The engine specs were featured in the carb section of the Bill Fisher HP book "How to Hot Rod your Volkswagen", 88 x 69, 40 x 35.5 heads Engle 110 I think and a whole pile of different carbs, according to the graph... dual 40II's, dual Bug Sprays, dual 38DCN's, dual IDA's, dual XYZ's, dual double pumpers, etc....

Dave Mason and his car are today's Ron Fleming if you ask me.  If you want to know what it was like crusinig with Ron, take a spin with Dave sometime  Shocked Grin  Ron did all his stuff with a 1700; I don't think he ever had a larger engine in the black car because he had the Underdog to put a smile on his face.
