57 Oval
«
on:
December 23, 2006, 22:36:22 pm »
Hi all,
I'm new on this forum, but I wanted to share my project I'm currently working on... my 57 ova!
I have this car already for several years, but now it is undergoing major surgery. It should come out as a nice shiny Polar Silver ragtopped oval(hopefully this summer, but I think that is a bit too tight, I also need to work on my doca to get that one slammed and narrowed by this summer...)
Anyway back onto the car:
A 57 belgian car (built in Jemeppe, Belgium), that I rebuild to drive 4 years ago. 1776cc engine, 10cm narrowed, CB dropped spindles, CSP diskbrakes, BRM's with 145 front, 205 in the rear, welded convertable decklid, T-bars, OG interior, Gene Berg lock shifter, full autometer manos...
How it looked back then
Now the breakdown and welding started. I modified the inner wings to accomodate the 10cm narrowed beam, grafted in a ragtop section, modified the wings to look like original oval wings (they are later VW wings), removable rear valance, ...
I dressed up a pepped up 1600cc for now (the 1776cc is now residing in the SLAMBULANCE), but will be building a new engine later on!
the engine
The breather box I built for the engine
restyling the inner wings
Ovalised the 61 front clip by adding the outside corners with the pressiing in it
Had to fix this mess due to accident damage
My little helper
I did cut a big hole in the roof, aliging the ragtop section
Done
The polar silver paint check. So I had the rear decklid painted already
More pics can be seen on

Seeing the car at the VW Nat's this year might be a bit optimistic, that will be for the year after I'm afraid (still have some other projects floating around I want to finish first...). I will see you there with my thrusty SLAMBULANCE
The oval was originally assembled in Jemeppe. There was a small assembly factory taking the german parts and building finished cars out of them. You can see this in the securit logos on the windows. They are all reading
JEMEPPE-BELGIUM
.
Where exactly this is... no idea really??
See YA
PS: If I'm not mistaken your car is in the feb issue of VolksWorld, right? I hope to get my copy soon since my fellow clubmember Kurts 67 EMPI Ragtop is in there too

Thanks!! At the moment it is still purely for looks, but I have all the parts for a SCAT 2027cc engine coming over from the states (they should be on the ocean already!). Originally I planned that 2027cc engine for the SLAMBULANCE, but I might keep the 1776 in there and put the 2027 in the oval.
The part I think that really makes my engine, is my breather box
My design
the puzle (laser cut)
The build up
the result
Finished with my PBW log (=Peters Bus Werks)
See YA,
Peter

I have been doing some more work on the oval this week.
I had to removed the engine bay trays to get to some rotted metal hidden under the trays, so I modified the trays so they are easily removable.
All in preparation of a future stroker engine
Stronger ridge
Fitted, all it takes now is 3 allen head bolts

Since I use a polyester rear removable apron, I was missing the inner part of an original apron. So I removed this form a later 60's apron and will modify this to use on the oval
The inner structure
I still have a gap I need to close due to a fact I used a later apron to cut...

Ok guys, how should I paint my removable engine trays?
Body color Polar silver so it will be barely noticeable
or
Black as the engine tin to make people look twice thinking "what the hell is going on here?"
Let me know what you think/would do!

Think that might be the best...
If anyone of you has a 80mm VDO revcounter far sale, let me know! I want to ditch the AutoMeters and install some more period VDO gauges. So if someone has one for sale (preferably 12V), shout
This would be ideal, a 60s version (earlier ones only go up to 5000rpm, not enough
)
or one of these?

What should I do?
Use the poly-ester rear apron with DZUS fasteners as I have now
or cut and modify the original one (the one on the bottom here)
The polyester one is easy removable and handy with the merged header due to the central hole
The original one is harder to make it removable, but it gives an original look... Can get into small clearance issues with the merged header/dynomax...
What would you do??

I would fix up the original to fit like the polyester one, and move the exhaust cut out to the centre, if you need it.

I'm thinking I might not need to central recess... there are many cars out there without it...
I think I will cut up the original one (I will have to remove the inner structure so I can mount it seperatly otherwise I will scratch the paint when I try to mount the removable rear apron) and then mount it by clamping it inbetween the fenders and body where it sat originally. Then it will be mostly invisible
This might be the best solution after all...
Thanks!

After lots of work making the poylester apron fit with an inner structure
and a remaining small gap filled up further
I decided to go for a metal original rear apron
Thinking about modifying the NOS rear apron I have
But I will keep that one for another resto and use the cars original rear apron
drilling the spotwelds
divorced
Fits as a glove (afters lots of fiddling around)!
the inner structure
welding all the drilled holes
DONE!

Originally the upper rear corners are stuffed with sound deadning material and this is hidden by the black board firewall. Since I will not reuse the ugly black board, but leave the firewall painted, I made a cover to cover up the sound deadening material.
It took me 5 attempts before I got the shape I wanted
done
mounted in the left side

I found my set of early VDO gauges!
They need a clean uo, but are AWESOME
They will look cool!
I also bought a new chroom ring for the tacho and I have a good used ring for the Amp gauge (these rings are not yet reprod as far as I know...).
The needle of the amp will need to get a new colour as well...

Deciding on the cloth ragtop cover colour, bordeaux or beige?
I think I will go with the beige... the bordeux is too dark and will not fit well with the seats I think...

It was actually Philip (Dr Detail from the FlatLine lowriders
http://flatline-lowriders.skynetblogs.be
) that found it, but he just ordered one from Glenn Ring so I got to buy it
The 010 was cheap (130 euros), specially since it is a NOS unit! A restored unit from Glenn Ring is more expensive (and is in the states), just ask Philip, he knows
The Berg linkages are cool! The main lever is way nicer then the older style as I have it on the 1600cc
