Yep looks like a euro '67 still sporting the stock long axles. Even a little 165 will be pushed right out to the edge.

I think "part" of the offset problem is the BRM wheel. I ran long axles with 5.5" 5x205mm chrome wheels (356 style), with 205/60 on my '67 and they fit within fenders.
Speaking of rear tires, I'm going to be replacing my Firestone radials here REAL soon... they're done. Looks the the Goodyear Eagle GT will be my next tire of choice... they have fantastic grip in wet and dry... probably 195/65.

I agree with the folks above. Short axles and the problem will go away. What width are the BRMs?

Yep - You need short axles, as mentioned before it will look dumb even with a skinny 165
Here is a few pictures of 205/70 on MWS BRM 5,5" rims - and SHORT axles.

Silly question, but do the M.W.S. and F.F. BRM wheels share the exact offset? I'm pretty sure that I have a late '67 with (I think) long axles and 165/70/15 Signet tires on the back. The wheels & tires sit just right for me. They're even with the fender and I have an earlier set of F.F. BRMs.

the narrower tires look just right on BRMs and a long axle car like yours, Mark. I't the steamroller 205mm+ tires that begin to protrude from the fender. I'd leave your just as it sits... short axles on your car would give it a tame appearance.
See ya Sunday?

Flat Fours are 5" (like originals), MWS is 5.5". My guess is the offset is slightly different, but I couldn't tell you which way.

Word up on long axles. I think late cars look just right with them...as long as your wheel/tire combo is appropriate.
Yeah, yeah I realize Fuchs are different than most everything else as far as fitment. These are 206/65 Bridgestones.

it's the offset of the brm's alright, offset +12.
the brm's are from msw and have the same offset as the ff brm's.
short axles are not a option this year, don't have the time to do the work, so maybe net year.
what kind of tires do you guys recommend?

you might get away with a 195x65 tyre, are you freindly with the local tyre fitters if so you could get them to try a few sizes for you might be worth a try

The fuchs have a different offset than the brm's i don't think that the 195/65 will cut it.
maybe a smaller size

Jimi, that's one sweet looking car. What year is it... '65 or'66? If so, the late body trim looks good on it. I've often wondered what that would look like.

i posted my car some months ago..but with bumpers and a low profile front tires...
however the car is a 1985 mexican bug (here in Italy after the stop of vw german production, vw import mexican beetles..untill 1986 i think)
that i modified like a 66..
but works are always in progress....
may be a day i'll post some pics of the "kafka's metamorphosis"
...but i'm so lazy....
sorry for my bad English...i hope you understand everything

ok for fuch offset..you're right..but i see in your first pic that Wheel is "out" ,not only the tyre..so, i don't know if u will resolve the problem only changing the rear tyres...

WOW! That's very cool, Jimi. I can't believe that your car is a 1985. You did a great job with making it look like an earlier model. Don't worry about the English... I have friends from all over the world. On The Lounge, we have a universal language... it's called the love of Cal Look VWs.

Ok, I have tried a few other different combos on my car.
I have already posted the two above pictures in the current setup: 205/70-15 on 5,5 MWS BRM - short axles.
I tried both short and long axles with different tire setups, before i restored the car last year and had it painted beige.
Below is pictures of the combos I have tried:
1. 195/65-15 on
5"
BRM (Donīt know what brand, but one of the very first repros made) - long axles
2. 3. 4. 185/80-15 on 5.5" MWS BRM - short axles.
You might get away with a 195/65-15, but i would lower your car an inch, to help the wheel fit better inside the fender.
In my opinion, the only wheel that can get away with using long axles is the fuchs wheel, most others donīt have as much offset as the fuchs does.
Hope this helps in your decision.
