Thanks rasser! are those 185/70 or 185/80?
the short axles and the brm rims are a perfect match.
i've got hold of some 185/65 tyres on 5 spoke empi's so i can see if the 185's will fit inside the wheelarch.
thanks guys, really appreciate it! if you got some more pics, just keep on posting!

Great looking cars Rasser, how much did you lower the cars in the rear? Both ones.. I really like the look of the beige car. I have a 64 so short axles FF brm with 205/70 but mine looks a bit to high in the back.

Itīs the SAME car! Just before and after restoration.
Donīt know how much it is lowered, I had the torsions springs completely removed, and tried numerous different positions until I acheived the height I wanted. The inside splines of the torsion springs are different from the outside, so you can set the back at exactly the height you wanīt.

Sarge, you nailed the combo. Short axles, BRM wheels (for their offset), and the wider Type 3 drums. Perfect!
Like Ratto posted, if a BRM wheel is preferred, then shorter axles and/or a narrower tire is going to get them even with the fenders. Other options are look at possibly getting a set of Fuchs 911 wheels for their inset. As we all know, they have very little offset and will fit well under any year of Beetle. Or, simply check out other wheel and tire combinations to get the fit that you're looking for, Levis. Let us know what you end up doing. In the meantime, I'm guessing a cheaper and easier cure would be to opt for narrower tires. But I'm sure that you want wide ones.

Ever thought of swapping the rear wheels for the 6.5" versions?

Hey, thanks guys! I have adjustable spring plates and I can barely get a finger between the back of the tire and the spring plate, so no changes for me.

Word up on long axles. I think late cars look just right with them...as long as your wheel/tire combo is appropriate.
Yeah, yeah I realize Fuchs are different than most everything else as far as fitment. These are 206/65 Bridgestones.
Such a cool car...

I run 195/65's, and had long axles. Then I installed CB's wide 5 disc kit, and it was to wide.......not to mention my 205/70's didn't fit!
Here are before and after pics of my axle set ups.....same wheel/tire combo. It's about an inch per side difference.

Both are w/ 195/65's.
Just put 195/65 Goodyear Eagle GT on my car Saturday. I actually prefer the slightly narrower tire (was running 205/65 Firestone), mostly because the sidewall is much stiffer now (they do not balloon out like 205 did), and are "flush" with edge of FF BRM. The diameter changed less that .5", so gearing changes seem neglible. Even at a lower inflation, these new Goodyears seem to be much more sure footed than the squishy Firestones were up @ 34psi (and the centers went away from overinflation on them). Hard to say if the car tracks truer on I-5 and 118 freeway in the gusty wind, as I think I have a sour front wheel bearing,
I'll post pics sometime soon.
here's a link to Tire Rack's info
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+GT&partnum=965VR5GT&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=0

Just FYI, this is Michelin XZX 165R15 with short axles and I think a 3/8" spacer on the rear. It worked out pretty good for me on MWS BRM's. And you can't beat the old school look of tread pattern of the XZX, the 165 profile, and the BRM.

Mike, the spacer in there really makes a difference and I love the traditional look of the michelin 165 on the rear of a beetle. Well done!

Jim, did you notice much weight difference between old and new? One of the biggest things I like about a smaller tire is the possibility of being lighter. Should make things snappier.

Thanks! the 145/165 XZX combo really made a difference on my '65 as far as drivability on the street, but then again I was changing over from M&H DOTs and 135 XZX's on the front.
Note to everyone: The M&H's are awesome for drag racing, but not so awesome on the street, so if you mostly street drive your car, get radials. Much more stable.
