[SHIFTERS] - Which do you use and what do you think of it?
«

Hey Guys,
I'd like to know which shifters you use and if you're happy with it..
Which one do you have now? (brand/type) What's the reduction in throw (40% or 60%)
And what do you think of it?
Thanks, Jordy

Angled SCAT shifter, quite sure it's 40%
While driving it's a dream stepping up for a stock shifter. It's just that while idling my reverse gear is a little tricky to find sometimes, but that might be due to my shift coupler...

I was thinking of going for a BERG just because of the name. But I figured that maybe the guys from the USA who have better access to all those cool Type 1 tuning parts got experiences with other brands than BERG..
I do want to invest in a good shifter, because I think the effect of a different (and poor quality) shifter is very noticeable...
I'm still stirring my gearbox with a STD shifter btw...

I currently use a "indy" Hurst.
I had some problem to adjust it but now it is ok and run smooth, reduction about 40%

I use a Empi Eliminator in my Ghia, and I have managed to use it at the track as well, but they do need accurate adjusting.
My favorite shifter at the moment is the new CSP shifter. I have a 60% in my 66 racecar and a 40% in my 62 Beetle.

Berg 40% or 60% depending on your preference - they are simply the best shifters ever made for a VW
Also this is just a personal opinion but The Empi Eliminator has to be the WORST shifter ever made for a VW - I had an Original for about a year then fitted it in the Manx and promtly sold it about a month later because it was sooooo BAD and there's no way I could justify have that much money tied up in something I was never gonna use

I think it's too bad GENE BERG quit selling those shifters with black handles.
I can only find the polished ones. I think the black looks good with with my red paint and black/white interior...
Does anyone perhaps know one for sale? (40% for '68 Bug)

I have a Hurst INDY in the Fastback. It took some getting used to, it shifts "ok". The GTV has the E-Z-R, shifts quite well, I was really surprised! I have a Berg in my '67 (bought new in '99), and it is by far the best, but I have decided to replace it with a DDS since that will be more period correct. The Scat and new EMPI shifters are GARBAGE!!!

Scat shifter. Very happy with it and pretty good quality, although I really like the new CSP shifters and maybe I'll order one.

I think the CSP shifters look a bit too modern for a classic bug...
But I am also considering a CSP, because I think for € 189,- it'll be money well spent...
(And I don't have to hassle with payment/shipping overseas...)
And I have yet to figure out exactly what type I need...

jordy, for that kind of money you can get a neat berg shifter off thesamba!
especially with the current $/euro rate!

Diederick, I'd use a Berg shifter. My preference is a 40% with the extra bend, as I'm not really tall. If I buy another, I may go with a 14" with the bend.

I use an old fingergrip 40% Berg shifter. The Berg shifters are the best in my opinion. With that said I really like the old copper Hurst shifters as well, looks cool and shifts good too

For street use I just love the old Hurst "trigger" shifters. Very nice to use and looks just right in my eyes. They come in both chrome and copper finish. Both nice, but the copper looks less like the Empi replica...

In my street/race car I currently use a replica Scat shifter, I think it shifts good but I'm about the only one who can shift with it.
It's much getting use to... really like the hurst shifters too, especcially the copper ones.

But isn't a 60% reduction too much for daily use?
Because otherwise >>

And Turtle, don't give me too much info, I don't hesitate kidnapping a postman for a NOS Hurst shifter...

I had a 40% shifter before but i prefer the 60% one, shifts a lot faster....I don't think it would be a Problem in a dailey Driver....

After trying a strange VWS shifter and an Empi one I won't be using anything else but my Berg 40%, nice solid accurate gear changes.

I must admit I prefer the 60% myself - I had one in the manx for a while and it was SUPERB but it was a friends and I had to give it back
I am now running an Old Skool "SPARKOMATIC" shifter - it just a formula vee type with a nice base piece that goes with it (wait for the next volksworld magazine for a better look
) as a shifter its OK
but I WILL be fitting a new berg 60% for the Cruz down to Bug In
I do Have an old skool Berg5 shifter handle if anyone is interested

I had the 40% Berg in my '67 and a buddy had a 60% in his '62 so we traded up for awhile. At first it felt waaaayyy too close, but I got used to it. When we traded back I could hardly believe the difference! The throw on the 40% felt miles longer than the 60%! As far as Berg shifters go, I chose the 60%.
