Looking good!!! I do believe the decklid needs to be lettered like the doors are. I was thumbing through a 1980 (I think it was Sept, Oct, or Nov) issue of HotVW's this very morning that showed it that way!

Zach, that is always an issue when resurecting an old race car, there are so many different incarnations that they go through, which era do you chose? cheers richie,uk

I personally think the cars should come back where they left off. Unless they were wrecked of course.

Chris,

Exactly my point, everyone has there own opinion,re doing it as SAVE-A-BUG wasnt going to happen though as this car is remembered as the Lee Leighton car Smiley

Richie,

All us old timers remember it as the Leighton car.  I think most of us appreciate the return to it's roots.  These were the cars that set the standards for many to follow. Great work on the restorations and trying to keep them accurate to their day.

Can't argue that it looks great Richie! I understand how race cars "progress",  just happened to see that article (September 1980, pages 58-59) the other morning and thought I should point it out. I have no clue when the lettering was added to the decklid, but I thought it looked pretty good in the little black and white picture Wink I for one am glad to see that it has returned to being LL's old car again Smiley

Good Point Richie, I would of done the same. I guess we can look at these transformation / resurrections as just one more chapter in the life of these cars, and a good one at that Wink

Maybe next year it can  be with the DDS wheels and the different decklid with signwriting Wink Cheesy

The main point has to be that in 7 days time it will go down the track again, something that to many wasnt possible:)

Zach

I tried to keep quite about the decklid thig..... but i cant beleave you would want the car done in its 80 style..... it looked amess nor would you expect me not to get my research done correctly, the car is correct as far as possible in the 7 days we had, spare us a thought, please  Wink.

In 1973 when lee first raced the car it was single paint, no chrome, BRMs and a lowered front...... was this actually the first proper cal look race car ?

The Leighton car is my alltime favourite racer. In the early nineties I built my 66 Bug to look like it. Nose down, BRMs (Jeckylls, of course) and the same hue of red. Well done guys for the sterling work Cool

I knew the wheels were changed, but I never noticed the decklid was swapped as well. I gotta say after the research I would have done it in the exact same way. Thanks for the pics Fabs Smiley

For those of us who saw the Leighton car in its first version, you got it right.  Keep up the good work.
