Seriously, spend the money. On my car we used one genuine and one repro. Eventually we gave up with the repro after trimming one piece and extending another, hammering it to fit where it didn't meet the original tank support or new genuine bulkhead. We cut it back off and bought another genuine one. On a late car VW Mexico stuff lines up and saves so much time and hassle.

Took rest of old quarter off  Wink



Got the media blaster out and cleaned up the inside behind where front quarter will cover.







Then a quick coat of Etch Primer

Finally new metal going on..!!!  Grin Cool

Hooky's A pillar Panel going in, used the hooky's fitment collar to set and then tack welded in place. Then removed and tried door on for alignment, Fitted perfectly apart from bottom b pillar but the rear left quarter was hit at some point (will be replacing this panel) so happy with fit. will weld up A pillar tomorrow fully front and back Wink Grin

Been there done that... Agree with Neil about genuine panels though, you'll end up with a far better shell using genuine parts.
I've fitted loads of them & it's been worth it every time!

Well a little more done today. My welding is getting better but still learning... Wink Grin Cool



More spot welds to fix in place...





Only one tack here as going to weld once new front quarter is in. Also not sure if this flange is seam welded or spot on wider end?



Vertical flange is slightly wider coming off the hooky's panel....



Welds cleaned up...







Gap between rear panel off hooky to body (i cut it wrong) so going to join...







Primer...





Flange levelled up...

Well did a bit more yesterday  Wink Smiley

Rear inner part of the body frame on the left rear is in bad shape. Going to replace outer quarter so thought I'd start here behind on the support frame so I could the then weld onto heater channel.

The rot to come out...





The donor vehicle, going to use several parts areas from this.... Wink





Area cut out, the part I wanted was Ok. Outer quarter on this donor is too bad to use though so going for OG nos on that  Wink





Cut off excess metal, drilled out spot welds where I could to make a neater job





Cut out rot area on my beetle  Shocked Grin Smiley



Offering up..



But decided to replace lip on one area first..

New metal on..



Trimmed..



And then clamped in place. Have got excess overhang on both donor piece and original as I will cut through with saw to get a good cut line match. But that will be next weeks job...







Once cut will clean up donor panel part before tacking and welding in...  Wink Smiley

Well did a bit more today. Used an air body saw and cut through both the new donor strut panel and existing strut.

Strut cut Wink



Then i put a better lip edge into corner on donor...



And welded in. Just need to finish cleaning up welds a bit more but happy with result  Smiley Smiley

Well finished tidying up the welds from yesterday and then spot welded to heater channel..





Spot welds cleaned and a bit of etch primer sprayed on for protection for now....

Well did a bit more on the front left "A" pillar. Decided to put spot welds on the larger flange piece then spot on edge for rest (looking at factory welds in  Baz's picture)....





Welds cleaned and then etched..



Not sure I like the look so may just seam weld edge up  Undecided Undecided

Well didn't take as long to cut out the right side heater channel (3 hrs rather 3 Days)  Grin Wink  Grin

Isn't it sickening when the donor car is better than the one you're repairing! Been there, done that! I haven't forgotten about bumper mount pics - now I can actually get to the wheel well!

I took a look at my '70 in order to verify for ya . . . My lower "hinge pillar" DOES have a solid weld bead from the edge under the door all the way to about that carpet nail hole!

Yeah donor is rotten in other places luckily and is a '85 Mexican so sacrificed for saving a '70  Wink Wink Grin Grin

Did a little bit more ready for the Hooky's replacement A pillar to go in. I want to cut it so the inner part of the hookys panel lines up better than I did on the other side. So thought I'd cut some of the front lower quarter off to get better access and see what bodges were done for wing bolt fixes..!!  Huh Roll Eyes Grin



And surprise, some Dexion re-enforcement..!!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy





Better access for later..
