That is pretty sweet. Doesn't the Paradise crew have a front engined dragster? Last time I drove down to Orlando I stopped by the Garlits Museum. Some pretty cool dragsters there.

I have to agree. I've always wondered why they always spun the tires so badly. Didn't it occur to them that their et's were going up in smoke? Guess that's why Big Daddy showed up with the engine in the rear.

Guess that's why Big Daddy showed up with the engine in the rear. I think it was mostly due to tire technology. Engines were far more advanced than the rubber it took to harness the power. Must have been one scary ride at 200+ burning the rear tires off!! Ever seen videos of Frank Pedregon run? A few times the tires actually caught fire!! I always thought big daddy put the engine in the back after he lost some toes in a front engined car accident
Thats right!

I believe it was "The Surfers" who first put a clutch disc in backwards accidentally, creating the first slipper clutch. Killed a few people with the new innovation.

I always thought big daddy put the engine in the back after he lost some toes in a front engined car accident
He had a clutch explode which cut the car in half and took most of one of his feet with it.

I know its not strictly cal look and I'm going off on a tangent, but I seem to remember reading in Garlits autobiography that either TC Lemons or Connie Swingle drove one of the swamp rat slingshots, but they were bigger than Garlits and only just fit in the drivers seat. As a result they made a pass with their foot resting on the clutch pedal which slipped all the way down the track resulting in less smoke on the pass and a quicker et. Poor mans slipper clutch I guess George

There were some nasty accidents with methanol powered engines blowing up too. At least on the bigger dragsters. If that happens you're better off having that engine behind you than in your face.. You have to be on the edge of suicidal to drive one of those things.. Some tubes, a couple of bicycle wheels, a couple of slicks and a blown Hemi.. Man.. Just try to imagine what it feels like. But WAY cool!!

Obviously any sport should avoid any unecessary risk so the innovations from people like Garlits were a good thing but I'd have to agree the Slingshots are good looking cool. Ultimately I'd say the Slingshot is the king of everything that is without doors. Unfortunately the photo is without motion but nonetheless a UK stalwart at Shakespeare County last year. Raced as 'Malibu Express' in '69 and now as 'Backdraft' and I think as a couple of others in between...
