Anybody remember the influx of pastel-aqua cars from 80's? I always liked the color on Type 1's... not so much on KG's or Type III's.
I think a nice car could still be done in the color, completely shaved, maybe chrome headlight rims, early sunroof car (64-66), detailed 911 alloys (black recessed areas), right stance (dumped in front, stock or a notch lower in back), big bruiser cc IDA motor, dual can mufflers...
Any pictures of cars in this color? I seem to remember a hot-motored car from San Jose area, 1835, K8, featured in Hot VW's late 80's...
Please share any pics or thoughts. Help me re-live teenage years. (I can hear The Cult playing in the background)

WOW! THAT brings back memories... She Sells Sanctuary was quite a song, back then. Sorry, but the cars that always impressed me the most were/are the simple cars like I see in the different generations of D.K.P. and many of the D.K.K. cars. To each their own. Carry on. |

Race Car look is ok... I can like the aggressive look as long as the car has the testosterone to back it up.
But nothing is better than a good sleeper.

Joe? Whom of which are you referring to, my friend? My roommate's old cars? Which one? He owned many nice aircooled VWs. The red '66 Sedan sunroof was the best sleeper he ever had. Too bad that we don't have any pics of it. Picture a stock red (Ruby?) car all original and kinda weathered. He kept the stock salt & pepper wheels and hubcaps. The only thing that suggested the car was modified was the dual FourTuned exhaust and Klebčr tires. He and my other friend, Dave Purnell, built a highly potent 1955cc 48IDA engine for that thing. GOOD TIMES! Later, we put the same engine in Joe's ratted out Type 2 Bus. I think it was a 1971 Westfalia and it was powder blue. Funnier than hell watchin' the looks on peoples' faces as we merged onto the freeways. HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Anyhoo, back on topic; soo... you're not referring to this as the aqua look, yes?

not wanting to get off topic, but yeah that album (Love) was the Sh!t, as was the next album... with Love Removal Machine, etc on it...can't remember name of album.

i can think of one at the moment but i have to look up in which book i saw it... it was a light blue (bahama blue) car and a yellow ghia in the feature. the bug was awsome (isn't that and 80's word??? like hella  ) and it had a nice little palmtree etched in the back window. all subtle but real nice and those special square mirrors i like those a lot. |

well jim i thought about posting something similar, but when i read your post it seemed a bit pointless. i was thinking about the fact that in the late 80's not a lot of callook cars (by a stricker defenition) were made anymore. a lot of customtricks that are really dated now were used. but now and then there were some real callookers that would pop up and get a feature. but in the late 80's there was also a rebirth of the original callook tradition that made its appearance. by this i mean DKPIII. those cars were not mainstream at that point. now these sorts of cars are more common and seen on the streets and at shows. but i can imagine a car like Bill's coral red bug, not winning a best of show award as it wasn't radical enough (another 80's word ) the thing i wanted to know is, if this idea of mine is true? how big was callook in the late 80's and early 90's. i always think we are just a small part of the whole VW/aircooled hobby, but nowadays largely known. but callook did have quite a different 'look' at that time. and if you have some really cool insight on the matter send it to uncle Keith as i think he is after this period as well in his soon to be published book |

Personally I don't consider Bahama Blue = Aqua. My car is Bahama Blue and I never thought of it as Aqua. It is not blue enough, has way too much grey in it. Just my opinion.

aqua look like more very clear green , here in europe we call it " vert d'eau " (water green)
like the one on the report thta was the twins 66 now 13 years ago

the cars I remember were very much different, no window trims, one piece glass, more of ultra-marine or mint-green color.
I know what kind of look Ratto's talking about. I couldn't find anything on the 'Net. Used to see 'em all over So Cal in the mid to late '80s. This picture that Stephan S. posted on the other thread is the closest I've seen:
Tod Fuller's '65 Bug comes kinda close... but no. I remember them having either no bumpers or same colored ones. No chrome anywhere, either.
