Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« on: March 06, 2008, 08:49:24 am »

Nothing beats the sound of a pair of IDAs on a VW. Post your shots of your street motors with your IDA's on top.  The shot below is from my 67 bug that I shared in another post.  It was a 2110cc motor, Pauter Cam, Dean Lowry built heads, Bugpack 82mm stroker crank with Porsche journals, Bugpack Porsche journal and Porsche length H beam rods, 1 5/8 exhaust (merged), owner built exhaust (muffler section), 1.4 Berg Rockers, MSD 6al box and MSD distributor, Berg Linkage and Berg Breather box on the alternator stand, tons of FUN and completely driveable anywhere, anytime, as far as I wanted to drive it.

Yeah...I know, the car color looks different when using a flash and in doors.  It looked different in HOT VWs than in real life too. Something about the way the color looked when photographed in different lighting conditions.

The motor got 24mpg, if I kept my foot out of it...otherwise, it was a hungry beast when goofing off.  On the Berg Cruise in 1997, I took off on I-80 and raced a mustang at about 95-100 mph down the freeway...as I was getting a little bored cruising at 65-70. It was a blast!

The other shot below is a shot at the top of the Park City grade above Salt Lake City...with Art Thraen, Jim Kikuchi and a few others gassing up their cars for the next couple hundred mile jaunt of our cruise into Wyoming. One of the best altime cruises I have participated in. Great cars, great guys and a great time!

Rick, did your '67 have DRLAs in the HVWs article?  When did you swap to the IDAs?  What did you notice between the two?

Sorry for so many questions...

Lovin it Mike! The fenders, the muffler, the wheels, the engine, even the chrome tail lights... different, yet it all seems to go together so well. Great job on that car!

Thanks Zach, I had the idea for such a long time it was so cool to finally see it as a "real" car. The thing I wondered most about before it was together was how the wheels would fit the theme...I wish you could see it in person because all of the parts have just the right patina etc...Albeit loud it is a ton of fun driving it and dragging it
