I love Alex's Black Bitch and Heydon's 67 another club car, but for me it's Ivan's 67 (another Greenhearts ride) - it is timeless! I was lucky enough to drive it to Santa Pod last month and give it a rip down the 1/4 - such a cool car!

They're all top cars, but for me Berglar is the car that got me hooked on 67's and Ivans car kept my interest.

that´s my favorite '67 Looker, too! Xavier´s '67-Look-A-Like, originally bulit by Michael Hess many year ago. That car has it all: dechromed bodywork with a flawless paintjob, nice rims, simple interior, IDA engine with dual quiets etc.
Three of my other favorite '67 Lookers are Hecotor Bonilla´s, Greg Brinton´s and - of course - the Black Bitch from the Greenhearts.

OK  I Forgot About This 67 This has to Be My All time Favorite, An Old DKP Member Mike Billings Owned this Car it was Built around the Same Time as Keith Goss's ChopTop it is Built the Same Way As the choptop and every bit as well Done this has to be one of the Nicest 67's Ever Built. and its a 100% Old School Cal Look  Car Was Built Like A Porsche 4 Wheel Disc's,Sway Bar's,Porsche seats, NO CHROME everything painted,The Porsche Alloys were Bought Brand New from the Dealer and Are Wrapped With CN36 Tires  15x7 in the rear with a 185/70x15 CN36, up Front are 15x6 with a 175x70x15 CN36, The CN36 Tires were a Great Combo on a VW as well as the 165/15 & 145/15  Cal Looks Back InThe Day, these two tire combos  fit the arch of the VW wheel opening without Slamming it on the Ground Plus it has the right Stance. VW's Were Not near as low as they are today they could be Driven anywhere back then and had a good Ride also there was no such thing as a Narrowed beam back then, cars were built with parts that fit and looked good without changing everything to make it fit.

just before my mind gets clouded againwith all these beautifull cars here is my list. it doesn't include a lot of european cars as it is made up of 'magzine-cars' that have influeced me through the years and at which i look from time to time to have some inspiration. they are older cars, some not around anymore, but they have all stoud out the test of time and if someone had built them today these cars would leave a great impression on me as well. i have seen a couple of very nice european 67 as well, but i don't know who own them... these cars are not in any particular order.

I love all of them, as each can be linked to its owner - it's not just a car, it's whoever's '67.
But then I don't just like '67s, I like other year models for their own reasons. Every year is special in its own way. The original Underdog in orange a brilliant looking '65.. Stephane's Oval, Bill's ragtop - it's not just '67s for me.
I can't say I don't like the '67 model year the most  though - and not just in terms of VWs, if you sit back and think about it, '67 was a good year for many manufacturers. A number of Amercian cars I like happen to be '67 models too, the Nova, Mustang, and Goat for example. There were some crazy designs which came out in '67 such as the Mazda Cosmo, The Ghia 450SS, the three seat Matra 530 . So I like 1967 in general as far as automotive design is concerned.
As for my favorite '67 Bugs - it's a very hard question to answer. Of course I like my own car, as it's done just how I wanted it. But the cars which I have always had a special place in my heart for are Gary Berg's car when it was under a blue cover at VW Classic back in 1990 - the Porsche Minerva blue paintwork blue my mind as the Californian sun shone on it. It brought the curves of the bodywork out so well.  The car was an inspiration to me, it really was.
My friend Hector Bonilla's '67 - well that car is just fabulous in so many ways.
Deano's old '67 was just so right it hurts, but the one car that I will always thought of as the coolest looking '67 of them all is Art Gutierrez's car - especially when its on Firestone slicks.  That car rocks!

I always loved Art G's car since the first time I saw it in KS's performance engine book.  The recapped slicks and stance awsome.
Donnie Bedfords 67 influenced me at an early age.  Scott Bakkens 67 (pictured below now with new owner and magnesium Americans) is a soft spot for me since I Scott let me make a pass in this car at the first Drag Day a few years ago.

Selfishly, I still love that black 67 even though somebody messed it up with a hairdryer!  ;D

Thanks.  Im suprised you even remember the Empis.  they were only on for about a year.  Its funny, I will never forget seing Mark Herbert carrying a pair of Americans through Pomona in June 1999.  At the time, I didnt even know Mark but I asked him about the wheels and he explained how rare they were.  The next weekend they were on the back of the SSB and I knew that I had to find a set.   :)

Another story about Mark carrying Americans. We were at the San Jose vintage meet in about '97 & there was a set of mag Porsche pattern 5 spokes. They were spray painted silver & looked crappy @ first glance. The guy wanted $200 bucks for them, so I pointed them out to Mark. "Nah I don't want them, I dont feel like carrying them" was his reply.So I beat the guy down to $150 & he ended up helping me carry them anyway.  Sorry about always baggin on you Dave,  your car is bitchen.  later Bill

Bill, you can bag on me all you want brother.  As I recall, offered me the keys to your car the first time we met.  It was that drive and Sarges car that made be take my car apart one winter and make it that much nicer to drive.


My favorite autograph in my copy of KS's Cal-Look book is "Dave, thanks for not crashing my car"  ;D

I like a lot of the cars already posted but my mate's Standard 67 with optional sunroof and real BRM's has to be one of the most exeptional 1967 models around.  I'm glad I found this car together with him from somebody who wanted to convert it to a speedster!!!!

nope zach, they were originally equiped with the sloping headlight fenders.
the article in Volksworld clearly states that they trial fitted both fenders but were most satisfied with the look of the upright headlights.
still it's a pretty good looking car. one of the best 67s in europe  8)

I agree. I once fitted sloped fenders to my '67 because I wanted to fake the standard euro look. I even got a ragtop clip too. Thankfully, I never welded it in, and I never got used to the look of the laid back lights :)

The dual muffls look a lot like the set I got from CB recently.  Except mine came all raw steel, how are you guys with the CB setup getting the chrome outlets?

The first engine was a 1600cc , Engle 110 , 1.25 CB , stock head with a little work , full-flow Berg , stock 009 ignition ,dual Weber 34 ict carbs and S&S headers . Result : 80 hp @ 5000 trs
The new engine is a 2276cc , DPR 82mm , Webcam 86b , CB rods , CB CNC wedgeported 044 Heads 44x37.5 , 1.4 Sims , 009 + electro ignition , dual 48 IDF carbs with BigBeef manifolds and the famous exaust etc .... not yet dyno tested , we hope soon !!

There used to be door-handels without the rust-free steel covers, they are better to paint. I bougth a pair of them, rarest of the rare....

This does IT for me... stance is close to perfect and the rear wheels fill the fenders nicely. Both important things when I look at a car. Add a seriously built IDA engine and you have it all! Congrats with you new car Endre and you still owe me a beer  ;)

Right fender is NOS (spot the dealer sticker), left fender repro, bumpers are good used (they were on Donat's beige cab before, but he found some NOS ones).

WOW!!! That's my car!!! Everything on this car is original except the headlight rings and BRMs. Hecker gave me an original pair of '67 SB12 Hella rings I will be swapping on this week. I have a huge dilemma with this patina. I love shiney bugs, but this patina is only there once- and it the car was born the same week as me. Currently I plan on getting another one to be shiny and leave this car alone.

But there are SOOOOO many other '67s out here- CHEAP!!! I have had "project" cars since I was 12 years old- LOTS of them (all of them worked on but never finished and driven) and now I'm 43. Just got divorced and LOVING driving this car everyday! I can't imagine tearing it apart for a year (or 10 or 20!) and then it being "too nice" to enjoy. My dad has 35 restored cars and hot rods. Some of them are amazingly restored show cars, but I enjoy the ones with old paint so much more becasue your not afrair for that tiny scratch- or will that truck toss a pebble that will damage the paint. Yes, I do want a really nice bug, but after having "bug lust" most of my life I really think I will leave this one exactly the way it is and enjoy it! I'm a magazine guy- written for them for the last 10 years, and I KNOW I don't want to end up with a project like Dean's if I don't at least have one I can enjoy!  ;)

Keep it like this, find aged german headlight rings and original wheels, and it will be perfect.

After your comments I've done some work to my beetle. The stock horngrills are back in place,I have repainted certain bits of trim in black, and I have dechromed the bonnet (correct for a '67 standard) and I have been doing some light rust repair. And much more importantly I had some fun with it today!

That is a great looking car. It sits just right and the detailed alloys look perfect on a Savannah beige car. I agree with the pear shaped mirror and if it was mine, I would put on clear front turn signal lenses too.

I guess that when you have admired '67s as long as I have you begin to notice little things.  Anyone else notice that on some of the euro cal-look '67s that are running U.S. style fenders that the front edge of the fender where it flares from the wheel opening to the lower apron is much flatter and wider than a normal '67 fender?  Is this just the shape of a reproduction piece or are are we using 68 and later fenders and modifying them to appear '67.  Obviously U.S. 67 fenders are getting uber rare over here and must be impossible to find over there, so what are being used? 

68 and later fenders from 1200 models have the small bumper bracket hole and the upright light, so if you want to convert your euro 67 it's a cheaper solution, but indeed they don't look the same as 67 fenders..

I can't work out why that would be though? ???

Did they intend to produce the '67 for more than just one year? I think so.

It would seem that VW knew that they would have to change the headlights so changed them for the US first, and quite possibly intended the "rest of the world" '68 models to be the same. However, the legislation changed again, making the '68-on "late models" their solution. We know that they didn't change things unless there was a reason - they were the most stubborn company in the world!

I know they had presses for the '67 only engine lids and valances, which makes me believe that they intended that model to be used for a few more years, but I can't see them re-tooling to produce a slightly different front wing that would look exactly the same to 99.9% of people. I remember Shubee saying once about the headlight position being slightly different on '68-on wings - a few mm higher IIRC. Was it another change forced by legislation? ???

yeah used too...the motor he had was in bits when he put the car up for sale. I took it and plan to run a nice Jeff Denham motor magneto etc .. Just made plans With jeff to have the car leave the use in around a months time so i have the winter months to get her ready for the motor.

Looks great! Somehow the painted headlight rings look better with full US spec bumpers than with t-bars.

Might be an S&S (with the tab in the center).  Tips look late though.

You are so right...(not 4tune), the merge system is a GB933S and the muffler is thunderbird :)

Cheers Glenn, the car performed faultlessly, got me and Em ( the new Mrs Davies!) to the registry office rather quickly! ;) Rubbed the paint off the wing edges with the back tyres when we were four up in it on the evening though... :(

I have a two inch narrowed beam on my car.  I think it is cal-look!  I had to do it to clear the fender when I installed dropped spindles.  Oh by the way Gary Berg narrowed the beam on his blue '67 for the same reason and I believe everyone considers that car cal-look.

Haha! Thanks Glenn! I'm happy with the front end being as stock - the tyres fit the arches nicely, not tucked in at all but not sticking out either - just right! The rear end situation will be sorted soon though - I'm ordering some Day Mouldings wings for the back this week. At least they are the same size side for side, unlike the crappy repro ones on at the moment, and I'm swapping the 205/65's for some 195/70's. Wierd thing is that the tyres fitted fine before (well, the drivers one did, the passengers has always stuck out a bit - see what I mean about crap wings!), but since I fixed a rusty spot at the bottom the drivers one seems to rub just in one spot at about 10 o'clock looking at the tyre. The gearbox and axles are original 1967 1300 parts, so everything should fit. If all else fails, I've got a couple more gearboxes including a '66 one, and a superdiff, so I could have a little mix and match session and hopefully end up with a stronger, narrower 4.12 'box! It never ends, does it.... :D

Thanks Lee, I'm glad it turned out ok! I'm not sure about racing the '67 - it'll need caging, and those 912 seats are huge! I'd like to take it down the strip when I've got the 2007 in it though. I've still got the '51 too, but that's going to be a long term project, because it's missing so much. I've got a few irons in a few fires about racing, and if all goes according to plan then I could be testing by the end of this season, which would be great - I havent been down the strip since Bug Jam 2005! :o

Tom, Good job on Gary`s 67.Nice stance..I saw the car at his house a couple of times.Maybe you should work on the 58 ,also.He would be proud. It does remind me of another Ruby red Texas 67.There`s getting to quite a few nice 67`s  here now.Probably the best  year built.I hope to have mine done later this year.The body is on the rotisserie. The pan is ready to paint.I`ve owned this car more than 30 years.

Right you are Diederick! It is Darrin Dugan's Nitrous powered super clean '67. I think it has morphed into more of a race only type engine as he feels the need for more speed, but the car still looks awesome!

The M&H's are 215/65.
That black 67 doesn't do it for me... It's missing something. It looks a bit better now that it's in Roger's hands though.

You should see it RUN!
This thing pulls like a FREIGHT TRAIN! 2nd to 3rd gear shifts are quick and VIOLENT ... if you et the chance keep your eyes on the rear tires, the engine is making so much torque it's UNREAL!

Love to know the specifics on this Beast. I know it's FI, lots of compression, and etc., but the GOOD stuff, little details ... that's where the magic happens.

I wanted to get in there and just look at every detail, but didn't want to be obtrusive. This car has the magic and a magic touch.
LOTS of hard work too!
