Title: TIKIMADness getting ready to go fast in 2015 Post by: tikimadness on November 11, 2007, 20:26:06 pm Hey guys I've been looking around here for some time and thought I would share my ongoing project with you.
I used to drive a 1972 germanlook beetle (the sequel) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/140620052152091.jpg) But after 7 years I wanted something different so last winter I started buillding the tikimadness I raced it at bugin#1 and at ddd5. It turned out nice but I was on the way of redoing some things such as narrowing the rear suspension to fit the wheels under stock fenders( don't like widend fenders). I also wanted some more poke in the back so I'm adding a turbo and a 4 barrel to my 2.4 typ4 (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/53935.jpg) yesterday I had the change to buy a 1954 oval shell allready prepped and just needs paint. The body is close to perfection so it's a good base to make a really nice car. I allways liked metalflake so I'm thinking of gold over brown flake paintjob with TIKIMADNESS in goldleaf Trying to get that 60's 70's gasserstyle I'll post pics asap Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Diederick/DVK on November 11, 2007, 22:25:02 pm hey michael!
a gasser in tilburg? ;D cool! Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Jesse/DVK on November 12, 2007, 17:40:22 pm I really dig the Tiki Madness theme. Think it will look great with metalflakes etc.
Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Fastbrit on November 12, 2007, 17:49:56 pm (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/53935.jpg) Mmmmm, Tatra 603... Is it the early type with the glass panel across the width of the nose?Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on November 12, 2007, 18:25:51 pm it's a 68 i believe it has an aircooled v8 in it and it belongs to a customer of www.deboxer.nl
michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on November 13, 2007, 18:55:42 pm yesterday I removed the body to make some changes to the rollcage. The (old) body has been scrapped already because it had no reusable parts.
I'll try to finish the rear suspension and the cage so I can pick up the oval shell and modify it to fit on my floorpan. I wasn't sure about the flipfront but I decided to not use it but to sell it because I don't think it is much sense to cut up a perfect oval body to then put the flipfront on. Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 02, 2007, 21:13:23 pm I have been working on the car this weekend and allthough progress is slow I need to sort out these small yhings
The narrowing of the irs is finished and I've been detailing the cage. Hope to pick up the oval shell very soon,so it's going to look like a car again. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/61962.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/61963.jpg) michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 12, 2007, 18:22:01 pm Finally I got the time to pickup the ovalshell on the other side of town. The downside is that I don't have time to start cutting all exces metal

michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 15, 2007, 13:24:51 pm managed to get some free hours during the last few days(late hours).
I made up my mind and decided to loose the innerfenders front and rear and the luggage area and the pieces under the bonnet. At first I wasn't sure about the cutting but as I took a good look at the car I found that it was never going to be a showwinning body. That's because the car has been repaired after a serious accident somewhere in the 60s.There are seams along the entire car from the rear left hand side to the front right hand side.it has been done to a very high standard but by cutting up the body I have lost most of the seams. Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 18, 2007, 21:58:15 pm trialfitted the doors tonight and found out I hav to cut out a piece of the front of the doors in order to close them.Since the rollcage was build last year in a mexico body and the older oval doors are thicker things don't fit the way I thought they would............
(http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/62585.jpg) also I'm looking where to put the switches and gauges, (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/62586.jpg) michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 22, 2007, 17:39:48 pm I have been trying to fill the holes in the door I made earlier this week to get the doors to close.

Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 25, 2007, 13:59:41 pm @Kobus I'm still thinking about it,on one side it will add a lot of strength but on the other side there is the weight issue.I was thinking of adding a tubular structure from the bottom fenderbolts to the front axle.In case of an accident(hope that never happens)it wil get destroyd any way.
I think I keep withthe subtle tubular structure. I have to wait until thursday before I can continue :-\ michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: richie on December 26, 2007, 03:02:13 am @Kobus I'm still thinking about it,on one side it will add a lot of strength but on the other side there is the weight issue.I was thinking of adding a tubular structure from the bottom fenderbolts to the front axle.In case of an accident(hope that never happens)it wil get destroyd any way. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/62803.jpg) I'll be making a cross between the 2 struts to make it rigid. Also I fitted the stuff that belongs to the dashboard to see how it's going to look once it's ready and I can say I'm pleased with the way it looks. Made the front of the cage today. This will add some strenght to the car as well as protection. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/63078.jpg) I will finish welding when the body and floorpan are seperated again(hopefully for the last time before paint). michae; Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: jamiep_jamiep on January 08, 2008, 17:07:22 pm Absolutely loving this thread!

Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on January 08, 2008, 22:06:58 pm Tonight I had the time to mount my new fuelcell and to make a mount for the pump.
(http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/63360.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/63361.jpg) I also made a point where I can put the cable on when I have to tow the car. This bracket sticks through the front window so I don't have to go on my knees to fasten the cable (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/63362.jpg) michael (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/63363.jpg) Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Remco V on January 12, 2008, 11:13:01 am managed to get some free hours during the last few days(late hours). I did some thinking lately and decided not to keep working like an idiot to try and finish the car before the start of the season. There is just to much work to do to get everything prepped for painting paint and assemble it and to rebuild the entire engine. So now I am thinking of painting only the inside and leave the outside to some pros (hopefully if funds allow english pros ;)) If all goes like planned there will be a glassfibre gasserstyle bonnet waiting for me at the volksworldshow. Think I'll go back to the garage for now. michael @ Russel :sorry but it will look like a project this season(primer) Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on February 13, 2008, 17:44:27 pm After being sick for a few weeks I had the energy to go and work on the car again hopefully Ï'm staying out of the hospital now.
So here goes, I've been working on the engine because I wasn't pleased the way some repairs on the body were done.I now found some replacement sheetmetal in the UK and I wil pick it up at vowo show.So no updates on the car for now. I did however work on the engine (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/64657.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/64658.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/64659.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/64660.jpg) I made everything of stainless steel and I will have it welded when all fits well. michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Harry/FDK on February 13, 2008, 18:02:56 pm Any Engine specs ?
Thanks, Harry Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on February 13, 2008, 18:09:06 pm 2366 cc

I began with roof insulation and fabbed the scoop which I covered with polyester. Looks like you already have some negative camber there, if you havent raised it I think you should consider it. Keep the tires flat for a good launch...
Looking good ;) Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on March 22, 2008, 22:00:15 pm @Zach thanks for the comment, yes I did raise the trans by about 4 inches. If my measurements are correct the car should have some positive camber when it is finished.
I haven't put all of the bolts that hold the suspension in.And I haven't aligned the car because I will disassemble the car in a few months to get the undecarriage painted. michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Bewitched666 on March 23, 2008, 12:02:04 pm Mich are you going to make an intake for the turbo in your rear window like some turbo cars have in the states?

Rob. I am running a renault 25 UN1 gearbox. This was the only gearbox that was affordable at the time I build the brown Tiki last year.Robert Jongen used to run one and it was able to hold around 400bhp without breaking. Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Prowagen on October 09, 2008, 12:39:30 pm I am running a renault 25 UN1 gearbox. This was the only gearbox that was affordable at the time I build the brown Tiki last year.Robert Jongen used to run one and it was able to hold around 400bhp without breaking. Wow thats interesting, this is a 5 speed box right? So did you have to get an adapter plate or a new bell housing made to mate up to the engine bolt pattern? How easy was it to adapt the cable shifter? And does the gearbox rotate and drive the right way from standard or did anything have to be done like flipping the diff? Regards, Rob. Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on October 09, 2008, 13:14:08 pm I am running a renault 25 UN1 gearbox. How easy was it to adapt the cable shifter? And does the gearbox rotate and drive the right way from standard or did anything have to be done like flipping the diff? Regards, Rob. Hi yes it's a 5 speed box but I am not using 5th. The diff has to be flipped wich is fairly straight forward if you know how to set preload and how to shim the diff. I removed the original bellhousing of the renault gearbox then fitted an adapterplate so I could use the bellhousing of a typ25 bus.My 2.4 bolts up to this belhousing and I can use the normal beetle clutchcable set up. Also if I have to go to heavier pressureplates I can easily change the clutch to a hydraulic set up. As a shifter I am using the shifter of a 90s To#¤ta because it has an arm that moves forward when you move the stick to the left. This way when I move the shifter to the left I pull a cable which controls the gearselector for the 1st and 2nd gear. Í will make some pictures this week to make things more asy to understand. michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Prowagen on October 09, 2008, 14:18:14 pm Cool thanks Michael, would be good to get a closer look.

(http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/73211.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/73212.jpg) For Prowagen: This is the shifter I am using, (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/73209.jpg) The lever going in the tunnel is for operating the gearselector. Here is the nose from te gearbox, (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/73210.jpg) The cable is not yet connected cause I am searching for a good cable to use.It will probable be a throttlecable from an outboard engine. ;) Hope this explaines it a little, michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Martin Greaves on October 14, 2008, 21:56:03 pm Hi Michael look good should be finish soon then. ;D

Started modifiyng the rear suspension today as I wasn't happy with the current set-up. First I removed the lower shockmount on the trailingarm. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/74955.jpg) Then I made a bracket for the topmount. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/74956.jpg) I bolted everything together again to see where the new lower mount will go. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/74957.jpg) Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: richie on December 25, 2008, 01:55:03 am nice to see you making progress :) that top mount will need more bracing, ideally another tab on the other end of the bolt or it will flex and maybe shear off,but i am sure you knew that ;) :D
cheers richie Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 25, 2008, 10:57:49 am Yeah this is just for mock up.I will make some additional bracing to the brackets to make sure nothing bends or breaks.
Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 30, 2008, 23:19:32 pm So I ditched the entire backside of the cage tonight as it didn't "look" right.I could have tried and make the new suspension set up work but it looked like crap.

Hopefully I get the other side done this week then I can add some more bars to the cage to make it more rigid. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/76427.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/76426.jpg) Michael Are they press in studs? I would be a bit concerned about that personally. I've had them strip on me before and that was on a steel hub not alloy. The RLR/Jaycee ones have screw in studs which is just a standard Moroso part and then Shawn Geers ones have the same but he also offers a upgrade to the Mark Williams larger screw in stud which is really nice. I guess at the end of the day it's still an alloy hub but I personally feel safer with the screw in stud :) Good work though dude, car is looking good! Steve (On Adele's login!) I think the press-in studs are safer then the screw-in.I used to drive my daily with the screw-in and they would come loose thightening the bolts. I was told that screw-ins are not allowed for racing because of that. The alloy used is 7075 grade 1 which is the toughest alloy around. The gold shine it has is from the amount of titanium in the alloy. The original porsche hubs are cast steel and about half the thickness of my aluminium hubs just to be safe ;). I think it is all a matter of trial and error but I am pretty sure it will hold, thanks for the comment anyway. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Neil Davies on March 04, 2009, 14:46:04 pm I've seen screw in studs that have a shoulder on the back to tighten up against - Wilwood brake kits for big V8 stuff use them. There wouldn't be the room inside a drum for them, but there might be here.
Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on March 04, 2009, 14:51:44 pm @ Neil I didn't know that but I will try it with the press-in first. If something goes wrong I can allways change them.
Will keep an eye on them regularly. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Neil Davies on March 04, 2009, 15:05:26 pm No worries Michael - I didn't know about them either until yesterday morning reading Street Rodder magazine on the toilet... :o

Michael All of the Strange and Mark Williams axles/brakes are screw in and so perfectly fine for racing. They just need to be correctly torqued and they should be fine. I have torqued mine to 80ft/lb with a dab of Loctite threadlock for good measure. My wheels have been torqued to 80ft/lb and there is no movement on the studs. I guess we could compare notes and get a real measure of whats working and what's not. :) Steve Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Todi on March 05, 2009, 09:12:57 am Just love this car!

Now I don't have the holes from the porschefan as I don't want to use that. It is a fresh case that hasn't been overhauled before. I got it opened up for 103 mm cilinders and alignedbored. Also I got it rebushed for typ 1 lifters instead of the typ 4 lifters. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/78284.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/78285.jpg) The case also got pins on the middle bearing to prevent it from flexing. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80371.jpg) And I removed a trailling arm so I can narrow it as soon as my back allows it. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80370.jpg) I want to narrow it about 29 mm which is the maximum as far as I know. Oooh and I put a guarddog in my Garage when I am not around ;D (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80372.jpg) Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on June 05, 2009, 20:48:02 pm Narrowed a trallingarm tonight. It's almost 100% it's just rubbing a little.

(http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80666.jpg) The inside (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80667.jpg) The inside will get some metal to strenghten it. There is space between the tire and fender. (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80668.jpg) (http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80669.jpg) I also fitted the offset irs bolts from Marco and they are a great way to adjust the wheels. Been working on the fuelline.I t took a long time to figure out how I would route the line but I think I got it right. The mainline goes through the passengerside heaterchannel connected by bulkheadcouplings. I made the pick up on the tank bigger going from AN 8 to AN 10. This because I think the engine wants lots of fuel and since I will be runnig E85 that means about 30% more then regular fuel. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/fuellines002.jpg?t=1261331244) I'll make more pictures when the weather is better (outside) Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 23, 2009, 16:59:37 pm Continued with the fuelline and fitted the bulkhead connectors in front and at the end of the heaterchannel.

Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on December 27, 2009, 17:14:38 pm Good to see some progress again. Keep it up Tiki, I really want to see it run in 2010! Yes I am finaly working on the engine together with Henri(mrHorsepower).Although he is doing the most work ;D. I took the tranny apart to put the spool in and found out that the diff that was inside allready acted like a spool because it was rocksolid and I couldn't turn it. I cleaned the trannycase and put it in the washer to get rid of all the grease. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/engine001.jpg?t=1261930244) I want to paint the case so it won't get dirty again and it is easier to clean. The engine case is cleaned for the last time and the crank has been polished so it can be closed next week. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on January 02, 2010, 18:35:18 pm So after a bad start today(overslept and 6 inches of snow) I got the gearbox back home.Only took a few hours to put everything back in the case and it turns like a dream.
(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/gearbox001.jpg?t=1262453012) I gave the case a coat of paint in order to keep it clean. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/gearbox002.jpg?t=1262453334) Some strange dude was hanging around giving me the needed advise ;D (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/gearbox003.jpg?t=1262453448) Here is the adapterplate that I had made to bolt the renaultgearbox to the transporter bellhousing. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/gearbox004.jpg?t=1262453521) The box is allready back in the car but it's to dark to make pictures arround this hour. Aside from mounts and adapting the Bus bellhousing. They sound reasonably strong, but are not popular here in north America. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Hotrodvw on January 23, 2010, 20:40:11 pm You might have a problem bleeding the brakes. The thread for 3/16" inverted flare, is 3/8"-24.....maybe that's where you got crossed up. 3/16" inverted flare is for 3/16" OD tubing. Why didn't you keep the fittings metric?? Just use the correct 10mmx1.0 tube nuts, and flare a bubble flare. ;D

I took a original lens and glued it on a piece of wood.I then made a surround on the piece of wood and filled it with pouring plaster. I will let it dry till tomorrow and then I will get the wood form the plaster and I will have a mould hopefully. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/mould007.jpg?t=1265477126) I bought some 0.75mm clear polycarbonate and i plan on using a paintstripper to heat the poly and let it take the form of the mould. Will see if it works on monday if not more waiting for parts ;) Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on February 07, 2010, 10:09:01 am Took the wood of,

Started with the exhaust today. Got my spare engine case and a set of borrowed heads.Together with some plastic pipes as spacers I made a mock up of the witht of the engine. I put the wheelybars on to make sure they still fit when the exhaust is on and found out they where in the way for my first plan.I wanted the exhaust to go up on the tranny side but this is way too much work so I decided to go up on the conventional way. One side is tacked and the other side is planned for tuesday. Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: tikimadness on March 22, 2010, 20:03:10 pm As may have noticed progress has been really slow last months. There is a good reason for that.
I have som other priorities:Making a babyroom ;D ;D It took a lot of time and effort but now my wife is finally pregnant. I'll continue working on the car in a few weeks when all my duties are done and I worked all the lists my wife made ;) BUT back to the car; Robert Jongen got me the parts to redo my steering set up. It is all mocked up ready for welding.I have some spacers made which are ready by the end of the week so the uniballs can move without hitting the spindles. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/steering010.jpg?t=1269284106) I also got a package from Simon from the paintbox (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/steering012.jpg?t=1269284550) Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: fahrvergnugen on March 22, 2010, 20:16:38 pm Hey Tiki daddy,

Little progress, I had the cncwizzard make some spacers to mount the steeringarms to the spindels. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/31-03131.jpg?t=1270062845) Fitted the lot and it seems to work well. The steering is lighter then I expected. I need to get some high grade bolts this week to fasten the rods and the steering is finished. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness Post by: Harry/FDK on April 22, 2010, 19:07:09 pm Michael, any news ? Title: Re: TIKIMADness updating the car for 2011 Post by: tikimadness on July 17, 2011, 12:31:11 pm So it's been a long time since my last post but a lot has happend
I made it to Bug-in and had the chance to do some runs . They weren't to bad but I expected a little more. Found out that the car is to light in the front. In third gear it wants to go all directions but straight. Also the front wasn't strong enough so by the time I was full in third gear the wind pushed the front down hitting the ground and bending it so the front fenders touched the wheels :( So now I'm going to move the battery to the front and stiffen things up. My best time was a 12.60 not the 11 I want for now but I think it will come in the future. I also put the car in the dyno and managed to make one run. 299.9 bhp @6500 rpm and 367nm This was a run where it leaned out in the secondary step of the holley. The holley I'm using has a vacuum secondary so now I have to put a metering block in it to make the settings ajustable. Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness updating the car for 2011 Post by: jamiep_jamiep on July 17, 2011, 15:43:53 pm At least you're starting with something nice & light Michael, you can put the strength (and weight) back in only where its needed. I had a look at your car at EBI and it looked great. Sounds like it was a scary ride!
What was your terminal speed btw? Title: Re: TIKIMADness updating the car for 2011 Post by: tikimadness on July 17, 2011, 19:05:34 pm 105mp/h

Title: Re: TIKIMADness updating the car for 2011 Post by: tikimadness on September 22, 2011, 20:49:43 pm Here goes, after 2 earlier tries on the dyno i finally got the carb to function like it should.
`Did a lot of runs and after turning up the boost to 1.3 bar the clutch started to slip with 385bhp and 425 nm ;D going to try to keep it straight @ bitburg this weekend Michael Title: Re: TIKIMADness getting ready to go fast in 2012 Post by: tikimadness on November 29, 2011, 22:34:52 pm It's been a long time since I updated this topic.
I only made one pass in Bitburg and it turn out to be on 3 cylinders .I had a valve seat gone loose >:( 20 + pulls on the dyne with no problem and on the last meeting of the year shit happens. I took the engine apart and only one intake valve was slightly bent. I'm having all the seats renewed this winter to make sure it won't happen again. I brought the car over to the Uk last week to have the cage redone and tagged so I should be able to race everywhere. The car is at Jim Smith's shop right now for the cage and a bunch of other modifications and I'm very curious how it will turn out. Made a mould out of an old piece of lexan to see how it will look once it's ready .(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/480222_391730244194408_100000723060483_1223221_1403591617_n.jpg) Now that the tabs in the body are in I started on the doors. Will change the entire set-up to EFI. With a water to air intercooler. A friend of mine is lasercuting the water tank as it will be a custom made one. I think what Kalle is refering to is shown here,it looks possible for the wheel/tyre to be pushed back into the footwell/pedal area, and yes I know its the correct side I drew on,not the LHS ;D Title: Re: TIKIMADness getting ready to go fast in 2012 Post by: tikimadness on May 08, 2012, 10:01:17 am The crossbar should protect me from a wheel getting in. But I decided to ditch the renault gearbox and put a 091 in. Got a lead on a really good one ;D ;D. Title: Re: TIKIMADness getting ready to go fast in 2013 Post by: tikimadness on April 07, 2013, 17:05:09 pm Been putting in some late hours last week as I got my gearbox now. First thing to do is make it shift, due to the funny car cage I had to make a pivot to re align the rods.
(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/foto-10_zps0348db89.jpg) It looks like it will work all I need now is the "forks" that attach to the gearbox. I then started working on the Co2 launcher. That's mostly done also. (http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/foto-9_zpscb4e6f44.jpg) finally I put my tires on the new rims. No the car won't be at DDD cause I've got to have a set of Pistons made first. The engine is apart now and almost everything looks perfect except it could use new piston rings. Since the Pistons are old(20 years) and look like it's better to retire them I'm replacing them with something more modern.
