Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: roland on December 16, 2007, 21:28:59 pm 1. Actually when a reproduction part is made, it takes the price of the original down, not up....
2. I think i'm not the only one to be tired by your speech. You keep bashing "today's" cars, but we all just want too keep cal-look alive. So what's the difference if there's side trim or not, or bumpers or t-bars. Still a clean bug with a big engine and the nose down, that's all you need for a cal-look. Times have changed, even if you wanted really hard, you couldn't do today a car like 30 years ago... It seems so long ago. I really liked my car with the Caldwell Recaps. I wish I would not have sold them. I remember when the HVW's photos were shot ,we dropped off Dave Mason's car at home and we drove my car to Bakersfield for an event there. It was really a fun time then. As for Repro Cal , Resto Cal & all the rest of that stuff..I own real BRM's ,I have owned a few sets of them. I bought them when they were cheap & only a handfull of people knew what they were or wanted them. I have also owned & sold most all of the desirable wheels, wide 5 American's, Gasburners, 4.5 Fuchs ect..If there were no repro parts this would be a very small hobby. Could you image if they did'nt repro any 32' Ford bodies? There would be no Boyd Coddington, So Cal Speed shop Ect. The Hot Rod industry would'nt exist. The same is for our industry. While I prefer original parts ,they are not for everybody. I live in an old house filled with old stuff & drive old cars, maybe I am just stuck there ,I don't know ,but all of it makes me comfortable & I am happy with it. If your car has repro wheels or whatever, but it is a cool car & it makes you happy what difference does it make if the wheels are 40yrs old or 2 weeks old?
I think some of us need to get past this and just be glad that people all over the world are into this little niche of the automotive hobby and are interested in keeping it alive and helping some of us to relive our youth with out noticing the material that your wheels are made from. Enough rambling for now Bill Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Shubee2 (DSK) on December 17, 2007, 01:19:26 am Thanks for digging up the photos Speedwell. We should get past the thing where it is only cool if it is original. After all it is about the look !
I have never had real wheels because you found them before me at Bug-O-Rama in Phoenix those many years ago. I had the money and it was reserved for a real set of BRMs, but you got to them before me. I remember that because Gary had the blue car there along with your car and I was on the ground looking under his car when my wife gave me some grief because Gary was there watching. You came up with the BRMs about that time and I was sick. That was the way it went. I like my phony wheels. They look good and that is all I need. They don't crack and they aren't porous. So they are not real. Oh well! Get over it. It has been a pleasure to know you thanks for what you said! Eating at Donny B's the day after BOR in '01, with all the cars in the driveway and up and down the street, is one of the coolest days on record. Didn't think I remembered.

In the old days, all you could do is to get excited while looking at the items you dreamed about. In the new days, you can get excited while owning those items and playing with them. How excited and jealous you were when you saw a car featured that had those items you just dreamed about ? Ah, the old days. :'( Someone can say that getting excited is just getting excited, no matter if you look at the picture in a magazine or play with a real thing. Well, for me, there is a difference. For sure I prefer the latter. I like "the new days" more :P Maybe the problem is, that there is a time in a man's life when he can afford to have things but he cant get excited anymore. Luckily, those times did not come for me yet. I like the rule of "form follow function" so the Aronson style is to me "true" cal-look. And for that reason I would never put a bumper on my car. But I have no problem with other people doing it, when you look at history, there were alot of "cal-lookers" back then and they would all look different, maybe some of them had bumper.I think there is more than one answer to this question(and another discussion)...I would love to have real BRM`s on my car but as mention a million times before...the prize. so my question is WHY THE F-U-C-K CAN`T THEY MAKE THE REPRO EXACTLY LIKE THE ORIGINAL ONES!!!I dont care if the can get cracks and that I have to polish them more often etc.....and it cant be that more expensive to put magnesium instead of aluminium in the mold.I would have any problem with the repro wheels if they looked just like the originals and where made of the same material..
just my opinion Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Shubee2 (DSK) on December 17, 2007, 16:47:34 pm I agree with Shubee on some points and Bill on others.I think everyone needs to make their own interpetation of cal-look. The car has not changed to much, but will be getting a mild makeover in the future, currently no engine, I plan on building a 2276cc w/Ida's hopefully before Bug In in April. Still rolls on centerlines. But OG BRM's await 8) I would love to hear any old stories or more info on the car, I know Bill was there ;) (http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g265/racebug67/2007-12-16-1734-04.jpg) And also an interior makeover!! ;D Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Donny B. on December 18, 2007, 02:30:52 am Quote I have the American Graffitti sound track Grin Grin Grin I lived the American Graffitti sound track. Finding a foundry in the USA that will cast Mg is extremely difficult today. I think it has to do with safety regulations. They were an exemple for the restauration of my car back in 1994-1995. If I ever buy a 1967 beetle, then Hectors car is the reason why. Allthough we see a lot of beautifull 1967 beetles these days. Hector's car was the first 1967 that made me see they were so special (especially the US-model).
This black 1967 DKP car was also in source of inspiration when I build up my car... or perhaps it was a look-a-like with a white steeringwheel of which I can't find a picture right now... As for Johnny Salgado's car, it was a very nice, fast car. It ran 12:60's 1st time out on pump gas, muffler ect. Then he got greedy & raised the compression & did a few other things. It did'nt really go any faster. It just made it more work. When he 1st joined the club he had early Fuchs, I guess he thought it looked too much like Greg B's car so he put the Centerlines on it. He wanted to do some other things so it got sold to Greg Lane and he drove it quite a bit, I remember seeing it all over the place. Somebody else has it now? It was a statement of notariaty.Bill's car has been together as an actual existing car for a vastly longer period than the Aronson car and has received far more press at home and abroad than the Holmes/ Aronson car. though I am in no mood to debate, John you're thinking exactly what I was thinking and Gary isn't. Bill's car speaks volumes about the legacy of the type of VW's we all love. The Aronson car was the first (?) to define it, but where is it now? And in my opinion, there are bits and pieces I would have changed about the Aronson/Holmes car. Bill's? Leave it as it is. Anyway, it's my opinion. And Bill can give me $20 next time we meet up ;D Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: speedwell on December 29, 2007, 21:26:22 pm i found the vw trends report ;D ;D

I love the interior as well; dark blue vinyl with lighter blue cloth inserts. One piece windows, brms and tach on the dash. Beauty!

And by the way, that engine you talked about in another thread that runs so great, maybe you can show us pictures of it installed in an actual car that you own....Maybe even a shot with you driving it...

Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Ivan on January 31, 2010, 23:42:37 pm Forget the original vs repop argument... How gives a *&@& ?!
Originals took a lot of work to own in the late eighties, before the internet - I know from experience. When Flat 4 came out with repops they not only did the best job they could at the time - they also opened the door to all those who craved the 'Look on a sensible budget. Today real BRMs are joke money - but are still the ultimate wheel - and those who don't like the look of them are welcome to fit something else - no one cares. Anyway - that aside - lets look at the new wave 'Old School' for a minute... Without Bill Schwimmer, Hector Bonilla, John Rayburn, Dave Mason, Danny Gabbard to name but a few of the people responsible for not only re-igniting the flame but staying true and fanning the fire; Trends, Hot VWs, Super VWs and, obvioulsy, VolksWorld (as during the mid 90's we made damn sure we highlighted what was happening!) the passion you have today would probably be focussed in a totally different direction. Also, let's not forget Keith Seume's book which you refer to as 'the bible' as another key factor. Thanks to all this we have this forum. An amazing place - a place to share a passion for the most popular form of VW modification of all time. Also take into account the fact so many people have come back to the hobby lately; this proves The California Look is not something which you can shake off - We're all into VWs, but The California Look is what makes our hearts beat faster! Having the sound of a hot dual carb engine behind you and the experience of pulling away from a standing start and banging into second only to find it's time to shift up and over to the right for third is the most addictive feeling I've ever had - but perhaps that's because I don't like the idea of Crystal Meth or Heroin! And the comment Bill made about driving Cal Look cars is 100% right - you can't beat it! Driving all the way to Belgium in my '67 twice for EBI and back is what it's all about. That and taking on anything that the owner thinks is fast - especially if he's got a high maintenance girlfriend in the passenger seat! So, join me in saying thanks to Bill, Hector (who is still with us - but looking after his father), Jim, John, Dave and all those who revived The California Look and laid the foundations for what we have today. Respect! Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Donny B. on February 01, 2010, 00:43:21 am Now that is a great post! I wholeheartedly concur!
Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Ivan on February 01, 2010, 02:24:41 am Maybe the problem is, that there is a time in a man's life when he can afford to have things but he cant get excited anymore. Luckily, those times did not come for me yet. I can assure you when I sold a one-owner from new '68 Fastback in A-1 condition to fund the two BRMs I needed to make up a set of four in 1989 - I could not have been more excited. Since then I have owned 10 original BRMs - cherry picking the best of them to end up with the wheels I have today. For many years they have been the only wheels I have had on my '67. Every time I look at them I am both feel excited and more to the point, privileged. However, and don't shoot me down for this... I am looking forward to getting the new, revised Flat 4 BRMs so I can drive my '67 like I really want to and be able to park it without being worried that when I return someone hasn't ruined my life by stealing my wheels. Sadly, it's go to the stage where originals are such a commodity that running them is nearly as worrying as letting a blind lesbian loose in a fish market! Donny B - don't you worry running alloy BRMs is the way of the 'thinking man', I hope to join you soon*. * And my real ones will still excite me every time I look at them - but they'll be in the safety of my home. Well, except when I feel the need to run with the wolves! Oh, and whilst I am on the subject of 'Old School' California Look - and getting excited, I still remember how I long I spent drooling over Gary Berg's '67 when it was at VW Classic under a blue E-Z-Up in about 1990. It stopped me in my tracks and it was like I;d been sucked into a tractor-beam. Sure there were elements that didn't float my boat, but overall it an education. The input the Bergs have put into our hobby can't be disputed. That said I have no problem saying that my favourite Cal Look car EVER is Art's '67. I know it'll sound crazy - but I think I was more upset than even he was when he rolled it. If there was a Top 1 all time Cal look car - for me that's it. Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Bill Schwimmer on February 01, 2010, 03:24:39 am Thanks Ivan,
This hobby has done so much for me, making friends for a lifetime, opening doors & taking me places I would have never dreamed of. It has been an awesome ride. What we were doing in the late 80's early 90's was total counter culture @ the time in the VW scene, but the people that were into it kind of found each other & made this cool underground society. Without the journalists & publications reporting on what was happening @ that time I think the VW industry would be much different than it is today. I thank you Ivan, Keith, Stephan, Dean K. Eric Geisert & many others who brought what was happening to the surface. Thanks again Bill BTW I agree about Art's car , it is my favorite, it's even better after the crash. Bitchenest Cal Look car ever built... Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: Dave Rosique on February 02, 2010, 04:36:21 am Awesome post Ivan!
I'm one of the "old guys" that got back in to the scene... sold my last looker back around '79. With the urging of a very close friend... one whom we worked on many projects together... one who has managed to hang on to his Cal-Look VW for 30+ years by now... I am now building the car I wish I had when I was young. The DKP cars mentioned are and have been my inspiration for years... but it's been said before, what makes this hobby / community so cool is the people! Every DKP member I've had the pleasure of hanging out with have left me with a very positive, good feeling about the hobby. As far as the Lounge, I feel I've made friends all over the world... people I'd go out of my way for because I know they would do the same. Oh yeah, the "close friend" who urged me back? That would be John Rayburn... (you can blame him since he invited me to the Lounge too ;D) Thanks John ;) ~Dave Title: Re: dkp car (bill shwimmer , steph szantai , hector B ) Post by: John Rayburn on February 02, 2010, 07:00:24 am Thanks Dave! Here's a little story for you all. Dave used to work on my brother's EMPI demonstrator, most of you know my stories with that car. The day I turned 16, I was at the DMV to get my license when the doors opened. I also had an appointment that morning with Dave Rosique at H&H Motors. I left DMV and drove straight to H&H and handed my '64 over to Dave and walked to my girlfriend's house about a block from there. Dave lowered my front end, put a set of 135's on the front which he had set aside for me months earlier. Installed my Hurst shifter, and my rear Koni's, which are still on the car to this day, gave it a major tune up, adjusted the brakes and clutch, changed the oil and gear oil, and my parents have hardly seen me since. I'm glad you're back into this scene, Dave! Don't ever leave!

Just kidding. I agree... so awesome to be talking with you again, Dave. So many years have passed by, but it seems otherwise. And I agree with your D.K.P. statement. The guys in the club are true ambassadors to all that is true Cal Look.
